Welcome to the third session of CLLD. It is often said that children live what they learn. The establishment of CLLD is teaching us that seniors have a yearning to continue to learn with the goal of enriching our lives and becoming healthier. We’ve met new friends, we laugh, we complain, but most importantly we have the opportunity to challenge our minds and bodies. The CLLD program has 1900 people enrolled and a waiting list of many hundreds more. At any given time of the day participants are working out in the gym, swimming in the pool, in the computer lab, square dancing, ballroom dancing, meditating, singing, playing an instrument, learning and discussing the Middle Ages, America at war, the bible and on and on. How fortunate we all are to have been awarded a grant from the City of New York that includes robust health and wellness programs, arts, educational, cultural, intergenerational and technology programs, and volunteer opportunities. This is an excerpt from the proposal that the JCC submitted to the City of New York when applying for the grant. Please join us in thanking the JCC for their commitment to upholding their vision for the 60+ population in Staten Island. “The JCC’s vision for our CLLD is to create a culture of empowered participants ages 60 and up who are dedicated to doing and creating enjoyable experiences for life-long wellness…it is designed to maximize participant and community involvement in the evolution of its specific programs and services. In addition to establishing an overall Advisory Board…, we will create numerous working committees to actively engage participants in shaping, operating, and assessing the initiative in partnership with the JCC and in accordance with DFTA regulations….” We hope you continue to enjoy your experiences and encourage you to learn something new every day and try something that you never had time to do. Welcome to the Joan and Alan Bernikow Jewish Community Center We are pleased and excited to have you visiting our building as you take part in the wonderful new Innovative Senior Center named the Center for Life Long Development. Whether you use the pool for a water aerobics class, “trek” through our Fitness Center or enjoy dinner and then dance to the music of Frank Sinatra, you’ll find our modern facility easy to navigate and our staff welcoming and eager to help. If you are curious about having access to all the JCC has to offer on your own schedule, be sure to stop by the Membership Office and speak to Jill Gottlieb, our JCC Membership Director. She’ll be happy to explain your options and the benefits of becoming a platinum member at the JCC which includes our Summer Swim Club and full use of health and fitness facilities.

Social Service Programs at the JCC The JCC functions as a human services agency committed to enhancing the physical, intellectual and spiritual wellness of the individual, family and community. We provide health, cultural and educational programs that serve the community at large, with special attention given to populations at risk. Among the many programs the JCC administers are Case Management Services, which provide older homebound adults and their families a case manager to help navigate the maze of services to develop individual care plans. We also offer Caregiver Services for adults caring for elderly spouses and parents with physical or cognitive disorders as well as a program for Grandparents as Caregivers. Our Kosher Meals on Wheels program delivers meals to the elderly homebound while providing vital help and contact to these isolated individuals. In addition to all these DFTA supported programs, the JCC provides services and programs for over 30,000 individuals and supports over 600 young families on Staten Island with day care, afterschool care, tutoring and related services. If you would like to contribute or support any of these vital services, please contact Kevin Brosnick, Director of Individual Giving at 718.475.5256 or kbrosnick@sijcc.com.
