Learning and participating in athletic skills is a good exercise that many children with ASD do not get, as they are often not part of an organized team. Sports/Rec programs will provide a safe environment that will encourage exercise, socializations, and fun for kids. It has been proven that team sports help some children with Autism towards increasing their patience, reduce temper tantrums, enhance social skills, physical coordination, as well as focus and attention. YOGA/MOVEMENT A way for children to learn the parts of their bodies, to follow instructions, work alongside their classmates and to enjoy moving their bodies. Yoga offers a structured, focused activity that doesn’t have a judgmental right/wrong component. The students will always see themselves as successful and will find their favorite positions. Program Registration: Sunday, April 15, 10am SWIMMING Basic swimming skills are so important for all children, but especially for children who are less aware of their surroundings. Swimming can aid children with emotional, behavioral, sensory, and communication disorders. It also improves muscle development, coordination, relaxation, and building self-esteem. Registration: Thursday April 19, 4:30pm BASKETBALL All players need to work on individual skills as well as team-building skills. There will be timed stations where the children will work on their attention and focus, independent transitions to all stations, and basic skills, such as chest pass, bounce pass and defensive stance. We will use relay games to encourage team-building skills and an understanding that they are a part of a whole. We will incorporate skills most ASD kids need to address such as turn-taking, keeping hands to self, cooperative play, communicating appropriately with peers, staying on task, exhibiting good sportsmanship, putting forth best effort, following teacher’s verbal/ visual directions. Registration: TBA 10 sessions for each program Fees: $150M/$170NM per program For detailed information please call Jill Bruen, 718.475.5212

Pink Program The Pink Program started nearly four years ago at the JCC. Janice Salerno, Bernikow JCC Group Ex Director, received a special certification in a program designed by Harvard breast cancer surgeon & survivor Dr. Carolyn M. Kaelin and Master Trainers Josie Gardiner and Joy Prouty. It is the only breast cancer recovery program approved by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and the only one on Staten Island. Since that time, participants attend twice weekly and have found that the benefits are both physical and emotional. Whether they had a lumpectomy or a mastectomy, they have a unique understanding of what they have each experienced. The result is a naturally occurring support group as well as a place to improve and maintain their physical well being. The class is open to all - members and non-members, men and women. It is on-going so enrollment can take place at any time. A trial visit can be arranged. The class meets from 6pm-7pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. For information about the fee or any other questions, please call Janice at 718.475.1143. "Even though I was 3 years post surgery, I had muscle pain on that side of the breast. After a few months in the PP, the pain disappeared." - Carole "I came to the Pink Program because I was finding it impossible to get a full range of upward motion with my arms post surgery. I found it frustrating but didn't know what to do about it. Within a few weeks of starting the program, my range increased and after a while I regained my full range of motion.” - Ruth "The Pink Program at the JCC has been a great asset to me in my personal journey to getting healthy and fit. My physician advised that exercise would be the key in beating cancer and thanks to Janice and the ladies in the Pink Program I am exercising two times per week." - Mary “Four years ago when I started training the women from the Pink Program, I saw a bunch of brave women who were survivors, apprehensive about their ability to exercise. One by one I have seen each of them excel in the program – they have gone from women who have survived to women who have thrived. I am so happy to call each and everyone of them my friends as we have taken this journey together.” - Janice Salerno, instructor 8

Community Program

sponsored by JLI Staten Island Kabbalistic Secrets to a Successful Marriage: How to Add Meaning to Your Love Judaism is unique among other religions in that it views marriage and loving intimacy as a spiritual as well as a human ideal. According to Jewish tradition, marriage is more than a symbiotic relationship; marriage is a union of two hitherto incomplete souls, and the bond between spouses transcends their individual needs. Jewish culture and tradition idealizes a joyful and content marital relationship and has a treasure trove of timeless advice on how to jumpstart and maintain a happy marriage. The Art of Marriage is a six-week course that draws on millennia of Jewish wisdom, from the spiritual to the practical, providing concrete methods for improvement. The course also highlights many age-old ideas—sourced in ancient Jewish texts such as the Talmud and Zohar—which are finding widespread acceptance in the scientific community today. The course will benefit newlyweds, couples happily married for fifty years, as well as those contemplating tying the knot. Married individuals will learn how to enhance their relationship and heighten their intimacy, and those looking to marry will discover the building blocks of a healthy relationship. Fee: $85 per person; $150 per couple, scholarships available For further info or to register please visit myjli.com, or email jlistatenisland@gmail.com or call 718.370.8953. Wednesdays, May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 and June 6

Are you buying the correct sneaker for your exercise class? Many of us today are not purchasing the correct type of sneaker and/or fit for exercise classes such as an aerobic or mixed type of group fitness class or even when training on the treadmills, elliptical, etc.. If you are not wearing the proper sneaker and fit you may be doing damage over time to your back, lower legs and feet. Shin splints which can be painful may occur. Proper footwear is essential when performing different types of exercise to protect you and give support. Here are a few tips that can help: When choosing a sneaker for an aerobics class such as Zumba, Step or a cross training class, a Studio Sneaker or a higher quality Cross Trainer is a good choice. Walking sneakers, Keds or open back type shoes are poor choices when participating in a class as they do not offer a higher level of shock absorption which will help to keep you safe during exercise. Open back sneakers can slip off causing an injury. Your toes should wiggle freely and your heels should not slip. Walk or run a few steps to ensure comfort and the above. Always wear a good sports sock that fits your feet. If you exercise frequently it is important to purchase new sneakers about every 3 months as they do wear out. So let’s get those correct sneakers and come see us here at the S. Shore Group Fitness Program where we have added new classes and more convenient times. NEW- Monday evenings 6:30PM Yoga with Sophia Tuesday mornings 8:30AM Pump is back with Carol New- Tuesday evening 6:30PM Zumba with Christine Let our dedicated team of motivating, certified instructors help you to meet your goals through our wonderful class program.
