ENGINEERING OVERVIEW—JACK DESIGNS Joyce Translating Design Jacks A driven worm acts on an internal worm gear, which in turn drives a lifting screw to extend or retract. As the lifting screw translates through the body of the jack, inherent screw rotation is prevented by an attached load or mounting structure that is anchored to resist rotation.

Joyce Keyed Design Jacks Some loads do not prevent lifting screw rotation—these applications require a keyed jack. A key, fixed to the jack housing and inserted into a keyway milled into the lifting screw, forces the lifting screw to translate without rotating. Several dimensions of keyed jacks differ from translating jacks—check the keyed jack drawings for each jack model.

Joyce Traveling Nut Design Jacks A traveling nut jack (sometimes referred to as a rotating screw jack) features a lifting screw keyed to the worm gear as a single unit, forcing the lifting screw to rotate, but not translate. A flanged traveling nut, attached to the load, is driven by the rotation of the lifting screw. This type of jack is ideal for applications that cannot accommodate a screw protection tube or require a flush mount. Refer to the keyed for traveling nut dimensional drawings for each jack model.

ENGINEERING INFORMATION—TORQUE & HORSEPOWER Example: find the horsepower required to raise a 7,000 pound load at 22 inches/minute using a WJT65 screwjack. A. Determine the input speed: From page 18 - 16 turns of the input shaft = 1 inch of linear travel. 16 turns/inch x 22 inches/minute = 352 rpm input required. B. Determine the required input torque:

When calculating the horsepower required to drive a jack system it is usually easiest to break the system up into ‘sections’. For example the H system can be viewed as two jack systems joined via a speed reducer or miter box. Always remember to take into account the inefficiencies of miter boxes when calculating system horsepower requirements (use a 90% efficiency for RC and MK style miter boxes). D. Section 1 required horsepower: Total horsepower required for the left side of the system = 1.72 HP/jack x 2 jacks = 3.44 HP. 3.44HP/.9 = 3.82 HP required into the miter box of section A. Since Section 1 is identical to Section 2, Section 2 required horsepower = 3.82 HP. E. Sum sections A & B to determine the amount of horsepower required from the central miter box. Two sections each requiring 3.82HP = 2 x 3.82 HP = 7.64 HP required from the central miter box. Account for the efficiency of the central miter box to determine total horsepower required for the system (A speed reducer may be used here instead of a miter box. If a speed reducer is used, determine the efficiency of the speed reducer as supplied by the manufacturer).

ENGINEERING INFORMATION—COLUMN LOADING Column Loading Capacity The type of load on a jack, and the way the jack is mounted, affects its load bearing capacity. There are two types of possible jack loads, tension and compression. A jack is under tension when its load pulls the screw away from the jack, while compression loads push the screw toward the jack (see diagram). A jack can be under tension or compression regardless of jack positioning, i.e. vertical, horizontal, upright or inverted. When tension loaded, the jack retains full rated capacity. Under compression loads however, the screw may not be able to support full capacity. For example, a 2-ton jack with a 15" screw length will be limited to 2293 pounds in compression, about half of the jack’s capacity. In compression situations, the load, screw length and jack mounting configuration determine the column strength of the screw. The examples shown illustrate four common mounting configurations. Unguided If the screw is the only support for the load, it is considered unguided. The screw must be large enough to support the load and prevent buckling. On the Column Strength load charts, use the row labeled “unguided” for the allowable lengths for this design. Trunnion Mounting In a trunnion mounting arrangement, the screw has a pivot on the end and the jack body is mounted on a large pivoting frame, or trunnion. This type of mounting is particularly common in the antenna industry. In practice, the pivot should be as close to the centerline of the ACME nut as the design permits. This will eliminate moment loads caused by loose threads. Use the “trunnion” row on the charts for this mounting arrangement. Guided Guided loading is often termed “fixed-fixed” loading. Both ends of the column are rigidly held — the jack body is bolted firmly to a sturdy base, and the load travels on slides, bearings, rollers or other means. The guides should be snug enough to prevent any side load or moment load from reaching the screw. Use the “guided” row in the Column load charts. Double-clevis Mounting: Double-clevis jacks have less load capacity than the other common mounting configurations. A double-clevis jack has pivots or clevises at both ends: one on the screw tip and one on the end of the protection tube. This tends to weaken it as a column by creating

eccentric loads on the screw. This eccentricity will tend to increase with greater distance and higher loading. For this reason, double-clevis jacks are severely limited both in capacity and maximum length. Double-clevis mounting differs from trunnion mounting because the pivot is located further from the jack body. The column load charts do not apply for this mounting, please consult the factory for load bearing information. How to use the Column load charts: Note: Charts can be used for Machine screw jacks, Ball screw jacks, Stainless steel jacks, Bevel Gear® jacks, Bevel Ball actuators and metric jacks. Charts only apply to jacks with axial loads. For side loads, horizontal applications and offset loads, contact the factory.

1. Determine the proper mounting arrangement for your application. Locate the appropriate row and find the screw length at the bottom of the chart. 2. Find the load you need to move (in pounds) on the left side of the chart. 3. Find the point on the chart where the load and length intersect. Choose a jack whose line is on or above this intersection. 4. Add the length of the end condition you have chosen and any additional screw extension to the screw length to find “unbraced” screw length. Verify your selection using the unbraced length. Example:

Guided

A jack must lift 5 tons (10,000 pounds) over a distance of 31 inches. The load places the screw in compression. The jack will be mounted firmly by its base, and the load will be attached to a load pad (Type 2 end) and is not guided. 1. Look at the “unguided” row at the bottom of the Machine Screw Jack Column Load Chart (page 9) and find the 31" mark. 2. Find the 10,000 lb. mark on the vertical axis (left side of the chart). Move to the right along this line until it crosses the 31" line. Any jack above this point should be suitable. 3. From this, the 10-ton double lead jack is selected. Look at the dimensions from the jack body for the Type 2 end for this jack. The Type 2 end adds 2" from the top of the jack to the end of the screw. Thus the total unbraced length of the screw is 33 (31 + 2).

4. Use this new unbraced screw length to verify your selection. In this case, the intersection point still falls below the 10 ton double lead jack line, so this selection is correct.

ENGINEERING INFORMATION— JACKS FAQ Q: What is a keyed screw jack? A: Some loads do not prevent lifting screw rotation—these applications require a keyed jack. Q: What is a Traveling Nut screw jack? A: A traveling nut jack (sometimes referred to as a rotating screw jack) features a lifting screw keyed to the worm gear as a single unit, forcing the lifting screw to rotate, but not translate. A flanged traveling nut, attached to the load, is driven by the rotation of the lifting screw. A: Each screw jack has an inherent number of input shaft turns per inch (TPI) of screw travel. TPI is simply the result of the jack’s gear ratio divided by screw lead. The TPI can be found on the jack specification pages at the beginning of each jack section. When the input RPM is divided by the TPI, the result is the linear speed of travel in inches per minute. Example: A model WJT 242 has a TPI of 96, if 350 RPM is applied to the input shaft, the resultant linear speed is (350/96) or 3.65 inches per minute. Q: How fast can I move a load with a screw jack? A: Machine screw jacks are designed to move loads at a typical rate of 10-22 inches per minute. For higher speeds, consider Ball Screw Jacks shown on page 50, Bevel Gear® Jacks shown on page 109 or Bevel Ball Actuators shown on page 118. For application assistance refer to your free JAX® Software or fill out the Jack/-Actuator Selection Guide on page 172 and fax or email to our office. Q: What is meant by “duty cycle”? A: An application duty cycle is the relationship between run time and total cycle time. Example: If a jack is on for 5 seconds of every minute, the duty cycle = 5/60, or 8.3%. Q: What is the allowable duty cycle of a screw jack? A: The allowable duty cycle is based upon several application variables such as load, speed, and temperature. For application assistance refer to your free JAX® Software or fill out the Selection Guide on page 172 and fax, email or mail to our office. Q: How do I calculate required input torque/horsepower? A: Locate the Operating Torque Constant found on the jack specification pages at the beginning of each jack section. To calculate horsepower, multiply this constant times your load and divide by 63,025.

Example: WJT 242 has a torque constant of .009W with (W) representing the load. Using a 2000 pound load you have (.009 x 2000) = (18 inch lbs. of input torque) at the worm shaft. The formula for horsepower is (Input RPM x Input Torque/63025). Using 350 input RPM you have (350 x 18 / 63025) = .10 or approximately 1/10 HP required. Note: Unlike Bevel Gear ® and Bevel Ball Actuators, Joyce Machine Screw Jack torque varies with speed, therefore the constants listed in the catalog are only accurate for the RPM listed. To calculate horsepower at speeds other than those listed, please refer to your free JAX® Software or fill out the Selection Guide on page 172 and fax, email or mail to our office. Q: What is the difference between upright and inverted jack configurations? A: The difference between an upright and inverted jack is the location at which the jackscrew exits the jack relative to the jack base. For example, an upright jack’s lifting screw exits the jack opposite the base. An inverted jack’s lifting screw exits the jack on the same side as the base. The choice between an inverted or upright jack is totally dependent upon your application. Upright and inverted jacks can be viewed on any of the jack drawings. Note: An upright jack mounted upside down is still referred to as an upright jack. Q: Can a Joyce screw jack backdrive? Does it require a braking device? A: Most machine screw jacks will not be backdriven, that is, power to the input shaft is required for travel in both directions. Some exceptions include the standard WJ 500 and some DWJ (double lead) models. Under extreme vibration conditions any machine screw jack has the potential to backdrive. Brakemotors should be considered for all these exceptions. Note: Bevel Ball and Ball screw Jacks will backdrive. Brakemotors are a requirement. Q: What is the maximum allowable travel of a screw jack? A: Either the column loading in compression or the availability of screw stock generally limits the maximum allowable travel. Column load limitations for guided, trunnion, and unguided conditions can be found on pages 8-13. For travels over 20 feet and long rises requiring horizontal mounting, please contact Joyce. Q: What is the calculated life for a screw jack? A: Because of the variables involved, it is impossible to accurately predict the life of a machine screw jack. Bevel Ball Actuators shown on page 118 should be specified if life predictability is required since they are the only screw jacks available with a completely mathematically predictable life. See Bevel Ball Actuator life expectancy charts on page 123.

ENGINEERING INFORMATION— JACKS FAQ Q: Can I buy a screw jack with a clevis on both ends? A: Yes, when freedom of movement in two axes is required, a double clevis jack may be specified. This design incorporates a clevis machined or pinned on the screw end and a clevis welded to the protection tube. Double clevis units are useful in applications that require actuating a hinged platform or door. Q: How is the clevis Positioned on keyed jacks? A: The hole in the clevis end is parallel with the worm input shaft. Contact Joyce for other clevis end positions.

Q: What are the standard end conditions for the lifting screws on a screw jack? A: Joyce Machine Screw and Bevel Gear® Jacks are available with any of the following four standard end conditions: Type 1 is a plain, turneddown end; Type 2 is a circular load pad with mounting holes; Type 3 is a threaded end; and Type 4 is a male clevis. Please refer to the jack drawings for dimensional information. Note: Ball Screw Jacks and Bevel Ball Actuators have a Type 3 screw end standard. Optional ends are available. Please refer to the jack drawings for dimensional information. Q: What do I need to consider when ordering a bellows boot to protect the jack lifting screw? A: When a bellows boot is ordered for a jack, the closed height dimensions may change from those listed on the jacks without boots. Refer to the chart on pages 124-126 for jack closed height dimensions. When ordering a bellows boot for an inverted jack, the collar diameter for the end of the boot that fastens to the mounting structure must be customer specified. Zippered boots are available upon request. Q: How is the load pad positioned on keyed jacks? A: Two mounting holes are parallel with the worm input and two are perpendicular to the worm input.

Q: How much backlash is in a Joyce machine screw jack? A: In machine screw jacks there are two types of backlash. Worm to worm gear backlash (typically 8-15 degrees worm rotation) and lifting screw to lifting nut backlash, sometimes called endplay (up to .020 inches on new standard jacks). Note: Due to the high ratios in worm gearing, worm to worm gear backlash is not a significant factor in most jack applications since it normally corresponds to less than .002” backlash of the lifting screw. Q: Can I reduce the screw backlash? A: Yes, screw backlash (endplay) can be adjusted via any of three following optional anti-backlash devices: Standard split-nut design; A90 external nut adjustment; and our A95 design. Please consult page 127 for the features and benefits of each design. Q: What is a screw jack's normal operating temperature? A: Our standard lubrication and seals are rated for a temperature range of 0-250o F. For operation outside of this range, special lubricant and/or seals can be provided. Please contact Joyce for recommendations. Q: Are Joyce screw jacks lubricated prior to shipment? A: All Joyce Machine Screw, Ball Screw Jacks and Bevel Ball Actuators are lubricated for normal operation before leaving the factory and are ready for use. The standard lubricant provided is an extreme pressure NLGI grade #1 (EP1). Specific information and commercial brand names can be found in our O&M manual. The Bevel Gear® Jack utilizes both grease and oil. The upper bearing and jackscrew are both grease lubricated while the remaining internal components are oil lubricated. These jacks are grease lubricated prior to shipment; however oil must be added to the unit prior to operation. Q: What is screw lead error? A: The deviation from the mathematical lead expressed in inches per foot cumulative.

Q: Can I order a mechanical stop to limit jack screw travel? A: Yes, an optional stop can be ordered on either or both ends of the screw. However, mechanical stops are not intended to be used as operating limits. Engaging the stop may prevent damage to your structure but will most likely damage the jack. To control jack travel, please refer to the limit switches shown on pages 134 & 135. Note: Mechanical stops are standard on all Joyce ComDRIVE® jacks. Integrated Actuators

Q. What are the benefits of a Linear Actuator? A. Joyce/Dayton Linear Actuators offer a complete package solution including actuator, motor, limit switches, and position feedback (potentiometer).

Q. What are the benefits of an integrated actuator? A. Integrated actuators offer maximum design flexibility with a choice of gear ratios, cast NEMA 56C motor mounting, and a choice of precision ACME screw or high speed ball screw drives.

Q. What are the duty cycle limitations? A. Joyce/Dayton actuators have been designed and thoroughly tested to meet the duty cycles indicated in the catalog pages under the full load rating of the actuator. No special capacitors or other components are required to meet rated duty cycle.

Q. Are integrated actuators self-locking? A. The IA51 and IA201 integrated actuators are inherently selflocking. All other models require a motor brake or other external locking device.

Q. What happens if I lose power? A. The actuator will come to a stop and stay in position until power is re-applied. An integral coil spring brake automatically engages when the motor is not running.

Q. What motor options are available? A. Joyce/Dayton Integrated Actuators come standard with a NEMA 56C motor mounting so any motor with a 56C mounting can be adapted. Integrated Actuators can be purchased with AC or DC electric motors as well as with air motors.

Q. What is the clutch and how is it used? A. A screw clutch device is available on units without limit switches. This device allows the screw to turn if the actuator is run against a hard stop. The clutch is an emergency protection device and should not be repeatedly used as an end of travel limit. Q. Are the linear actuators user-serviceable? A. A comprehensive O&M manual is supplied with each actuator and some components can be replaced in the field. However, it is often more convenient and cost effective to replace the entire actuator. Q. Are the limit switches pre-set? A. Models with limit switches must be installed prior to setting the limit switch. This allows the flexibility to tailor the stop positions to the individual application. Q. What is the restraining torque on linear actuators? A. The restraining torque is the torque required to resist screw rotation. About 60 inch pounds for the 500 pound actuator. About 190 inch pounds for the 1500 pound actuator.

Versatile Joyce Machine Screw Jacks lift and precisely position all kinds of loads from 250 lbs. to 250 tons. Upright or inverted, these precision jacks operate at full capacity whether the load is in tension or compression. WJ series single lead jacks are self locking under full lifting capacity. DWJ double lead series jacks offer increased travel speed. Heat treated alloy steel worm shafts, aluminum/ bronze worm gears and tapered roller or ball bearings provide rugged reliability. Joyce Ball Screw Jacks feature a ball nut with integral ball bearings that recirculate along the surface of the ball screw. The significantly reduced friction between the ball nut and screw results in greater efficiency, with up to 2/3 less input torque required to move the load than a similarly rated machine screw jack. Compared to Machine Screw Jacks, Joyce Ball Screw Jacks • Require less motor horsepower • Allow higher travel speed • Provide an extended duty cycle Joyce Ball Screw Jacks are available in translating screw or rotating screw (keyed for traveling nut) designs. Translating screws are available with threaded, load pad, clevis or plain ends. Options include limit switches, encoders, geared potentiometers, direct drive and reducer mounts, and protective boots. Joyce Ball Screw Jacks are ideal for single or multiple jack systems. Unlike Machine Screw Jacks, Ball Screw Jacks are not self-locking. Joyce Metric Machine Screw Jacks, series MWJ, are available in four common sizes 10, 25, 50, and 100kN. Joyce MWJ jacks include industry standard metric lifting screw diameters and pitches. All mounting hole locations, diameters, and fasteners are fully metric. These jacks are commonly used in OEM machinery manufactured in the US and shipped to other countries around the world. Joyce MWJ jacks are interchangeable with several of the most common European brands. (Contact Joyce for compatibility in replacement applications). J0YCE ELECTRIC CYLINDERS Joyce/Dayton Electric Cylinders are designed for use in industrial environments where protection of the lifting screw mechanism is critical and low maintenance is desirable. Requiring only electric power, Joyce® Electric Cylinders may also be used in place of hydraulic cylinders, eliminating the cost and potential for leaks associated with hydraulic systems. Electric Cylinders utilize the same drive housings offered on our rugged Acme (machine) Screw and Ball Screw Jacks. They are manufactured in five sizes from 2.5 to 20 ton static capacity. Electric Cylinders can achieve speeds up to 546 inches per minute and raise loads up to 100 inches. Complete dynamic speed/load ratings and maximum rise information can be viewed on our quick reference charts (pages 97-101). Both Acme Screw (ECA) and Ball Screw (ECB) models are designed to operate at the charted capacities under both tension and/or compression loading. Joyce offers three Electric Cylinder models; Standard, Motor Mount, and ComDrive. All three models are described in more detail on page 96.

Joyce Electric Cylinders are conveniently offered with many of our popular accessory options. These options include female clevis/brackets, mechanical & electronic limit switches, encoders, potentiometers, handwheels, and mechanical counters. Common applications for Electric Cylinders include damper operators, door openers, platform lifting applications, work table adjusters, oven hood openers, security gate operators, and antenna actuators. All Joyce Electric Cylinders incorporate the following features and benefits: • Ground and hard-chrome plated inner cylinder tube resists harsh contaminants while providing smooth cylinder translation • Dual lip tube seals retain lubrication while preventing dirt and grime from entering the internal cavity and contaminating the lifting screw • Durable enamel coated exterior surfaces (epoxy coating available) • Rigid cylinder tube guide bearings provide resistance to buckling (external guides are required when side loads are present) • Heat treated alloy steel input shafts riding on tapered roller bearings provide proper worm-gear alignment for increased service life

• Spring-loaded input shaft seals prevent the loss of lubrication • Aluminum-bronze worm-gear rides on high quality tapered roller or ball thrust bearings Electric Cylinder Operation: The input (worm) shaft rotates a worm-gear which in turn rotates the lifting screw. As the lifting screw rotates, it forces the lifting nut (fixed to the cylinder tube) to translate, thus extending or retracting the cylinder tube. For proper operation, the load being lifted must be restrained from rotation.

J0YCE ELECTRIC CYLINDERS – MODELS Standard The Joyce® Standard Electric Cylinder is intended for applications where the customer provides their own drive motor and coupling. To determine capacity, input torque, and turns per inch use the specification chart shown on page 102. This design can also be used where one or more Electric Cylinders are being driven by one common drive motor or in combination with the Motor Mount or ComDRIVE models listed below. Motor Mount Joyce Motor Mount Electric Cylinders are intended for higher-speed applications. Motor Mount models can be used in conjunction with one or more of the standard electric cylinders shown above. J0YCE ELECTRIC CYLINDERS – QUICK REFERENCE Use the following charts to select the Electric Cylinder that best fits your application. Please contact Joyce/Dayton with questions regarding the proper selection of Electric Cylinders. Basic Guidelines: • Select the model most closely matching your desired load and speed requirements. The chart is sorted by static capacity, then screw type (ACME or ball), then travel speed.

• All models with efficiencies >30% require a brake motor • Models with efficiencies <=30% are self locking in the absence of vibration. A brake motor is required if vibration is present or faster stopping times are desired.

• To determine the maximum rise for the model selected, see maximum rise chart below.

• Loads and speeds shown assume use of a 1750 rpm 3ph AC induction motor.

• In general, models starting with ECA (ACME screw electric cylinders) are less expensive than models starting with ECB (ball screw electric cylinders).

• Cylinder tube torque per pound thrust is the means to calculate how much torque must be resisted at the mounting locations of the cylinder. To calculate torque (in*lb), multiply the value in the chart times the load in pounds.

• L, M, and H in the model numbers designate low, medium, or high screw leads. • ECA models are not suitable for duty cycles greater than 25%.

• When ordering cylinders with a ComDRIVE reducer listed the part number should specify the proper (4) letter ComDRIVE shaft code from page 167. Units with a “Direct Drive” listing should specify the proper (4) letter motor mount code listed on page 167.

• Direct drive models are typically less expensive than models with an external gearbox (ComDRIVE option).

Joyce Bevel Gear jacks offer higher efficiency and greater speed than other mechanical screw jacks. At the same time, Bevel Gear S Series jacks still provide the benefit of a self-locking screw—no special brake is required to prevent the jack from lowering under load. Spiral bevel gears increase strength for higher capacities. Bevel Gear jacks also act as a miter gear box, making them an ideal choice for many multi-jack systems. As many as three output shafts may be specified for mounting motors, limit switches, readout devices and other accessories. Bevel Gear jacks are also available complete with reducer or direct drive in a ready-to-run package. Joyce bevel gear jacks come in translating screw (shown), and rotating screw (keyed for traveling nut) designs. Jacks are available with one of four standard screw ends or special ends to meet your requirements. Standard jacks have right hand screw threads, left hand screw threads are available upon request. Design Tips 1. A PV value must be calculated for each application. The continuous running time should never exceed the corresponding T value as derived from the graphs on pages 116 and 117. 2. Data is calculated based on limiting the lifting nut temperature rise from 70° F to 200°F (100° below dropping point of the grease). 3. Check single lead vs. double lead screws in each case. A double lead screw may be the appropriate choice, due to increased efficiency while offering the same performance characteristics. 4. If using Bevel Gear jacks as an integral miter gear box, contact factory for horsepower and application data.

6. Special jacks are available. Contact the factory for performance criteria. 7. Bevel Gear series jacks are furnished with one shaft in position #2. Jacks may be ordered with up to 3 shafts located at any combination of position numbers 1, 2, or 3. 8. The jack is designed for oil bath (EP-90 gear lubricant) or grease operation. The upper bearing is grease lubricated through a fitting on top of the jack, and the screw is grease lubricated by rubbing directly on the screw. If the jack base is mounted other than horizontally with the baseplate down, contact the factory for lubrication instructions. Contact Joyce for applicable lubrication specifications.

5. Joyce Bevel Gear “S” series jacks are inherently self locking— to eliminate coasting and allow more accurate positioning. A brake is required for “D” series.

Application Information In many applications, Joyce Bevel Gear jacks are more efficient and faster than worm gear driven jacks. To determine the suitability of a Bevel Gear jack for your application, use the steps below to calculate load, travel speed and duty cycle. Step 1 - Determine load in pounds. Step 2 - Determine velocity in feet per minute. Step 3 - Determine duty cycle in terms of minutes operation (time on) and minutes resting (time off). Step 4 - Calculate PV PV= Load in pounds x velocity in feet per minute 1000 Step 5 - Calculate T T= cooling time (from chart on P. 109) x Time on Time off Step 6 - Plot the point on the graphs for the calculated values. If the point falls below the line the application is satisfactory. If it is above the line, recalculate T for the next size jack and plot the new values for the next larger size jack. Note: T must be calculated for the size jack corresponding to the graph, since each jack has a different cooling time. Step 7 - Calculate horsepower required R.P.M. = velocity in feet per minute x 12 x input turns per 1" travel (from chart on P. 109) Horsepower = Pinion torque (from chart) x Load x RPM 63,025 Sample A 5000 pound load must be raised 30 inches in 15 seconds. The load remains in position for 2 minutes. It is then lowered and remains lowered for 30 seconds. The cycle begins again. Determine the appropriate bevel gear jack and calculate the horsepower required. BB Series actuators provide higher speeds and less heat generation than other mechanical actuators, with more precise positioning and repeatability than hydraulic cylinders. Featuring spiral bevel gear driven ball screws, BB Series actuators provide efficiencies up to 86%, high duty cycles, travel speeds to 48 FPM and static capacities up to 100 tons. They carry a J-10 life cycle rating with fully predictable service life expectancy (see charts on page 123). BB Series actuators are ideal for either single operation or multiple actuator systems. Motorized versions are available; for precise positioning Bevel Ball actuators can operate with stepper or servo motors and other variable speed drives. Other options include limit switches, encoders, geared potentiometers, direct drive and reducer mounts, protective boots and left hand threaded screws. Bevel Ball actuators also act as a miter gear box, simplifying multiple actuator systems and reducing cost. A CCESSORIES— J OYCE ANTI-BACKLASH DEVICES Joyce Anti-backlash Devices compensate for thread wear to reduce screw endplay Split Gear Design Best suited for light dynamic loads (1/3 jack capacity or less) and full jack capacity in a static condition. A split gear and dowel pins maintain gear alignment. Adjustments to this unit are made by tightening the sleeve (housing) cap. This design will typically reduce screw endplay to .010-.015 inches. Typical applications include steel mill and paper mill roll actuators. The Split Gear Design is available in all upright and inverted Translating and Traveling Nut machine screw jacks from 2 to 75 tons as well as some Keyed models. This unit can be ordered by using an “A” designation at the end of the jack model number. Ordering Information: See page 164 A90 Design Ideal for medium dynamic loads (1/2 to 3/4 jack capacity) and full jack capacity in a static condition. This design incorporates a hardened steel plate pinned to the top of the internal gear and a secondary nut placed above the steel plate. Pressure to separate the gear and secondary nut is applied via dog point set screws placed around the secondary nut. The set screws are externally adjustable. This design will typically reduce screw endplay to .008.012 inches. Typical applications include antenna and solar dish actuators. The A90 Design is available in upright Translating machine screw jack models from 25 to 100 tons. This unit can be ordered by using an “A90” designation at the end of the jack model number. ACCESSORIES— JOYCE MOTOR S TARTERS A Joyce motor starter is the heart of a basic control system for a motorized jack, actuator or ComDRIVE® system. It includes extend and retract push-buttons for momentary operation. A lighted power-on control lets operators easily determine if there is power to the system. Limit switch terminal connections are provided for high, emergency high, low and emergency low limits. Additional terminal connections for monitoring push-buttons and motor overload allow the Joyce motor starter to easily integrate with other control devices. Each Joyce motor starter model is perfectly matched to motors between 1/3 and 15 horsepower, and between 200 and 575 volt, three phase power requirements. IEC motor overload protection guards against motor damage and short circuits. A NEMA 12 enclosure is standard, a NEMA 4 panel is optional. V A R I A B L E S P E E D P O S I T I O N I N G S Y S T E M ( V. S . P. S . ) Joyce has expanded their control offerings to now include a programmable controller. The new Joyce, Variable Speed Positioning System (V.S.P.S.) increases the capabilities of motorized jacks, by allowing the operator to easily program up to 10 stopping locations. The VSPS includes a 2 Line HMI display with tactile feel push buttons, used to control all aspects of system operation and programming. The display read-out indicates current position and preset stopping location. An enclosure mounted speed control dial allows real time speed control of the motorized jacks. The enclosure door also features an e-Stop push button and power-on indicator light to allow easy confirmation of the system’s power status. A control pendant 4-pin connector is standard on all VSPS boxes. Joyce can provide a two button pendant to allow the operator to control the system away from the control box.

ACCESSORIES Joyce Trunnions are used in installations where the jack moves through an arc during operation. These jacks are often configured with motor mounts or as ComDRIVES®. Trunnion adapter plates bolt to the jack flange and have precision bores for trunnion pins. Design Information The trunnion pins should be supported to within 1/16 inch of the trunnion adapter plate. See the “A” dimension in the table for the width of the mounting surfaces should be less than or equal to the “A” dimension plus 0.13 inches. The customer supplied trunnion pins should be ground to the “D” diameters shown in the table. Using a 10-turn potentiometer, a signal is provided as either a change in resistance or current (when supplied with a 4-20ma instrument transformer) which is proportional to the actual position of the screw. This signal is commonly used for applications where PLCs or computers control jacks. Geared potentiometers are available on worm gear design jacks of 2-150 ton capacity. Geared potentiometers include a slip clutch to prevent damage due to over-rotation but should always be inspected during installation to ensure that a full range of motion is available throughout the jack travel. As an additional option, geared potentiometers are available with upper and lower mechanical limit switches. These switches are common SPDT cam operated switches and can be used for end of travel limits or set points. The standard operating voltage is less than or equal to 48V. An operating voltage greater than 48V is available upon request. They are also ideal in any application where rotary motion of a machine component can be used to indicate linear motion of another part. LS7 Limit Switch The LS7 Limit Switch is our economy model with two S.P.D.T. switch contacts. This switch offers a NEMA 4 rated enclosure. LS8 Limit Switch The LS8 limit switch is best suited for general purpose applications requiring up to four switch contacts for operating motors, lights and other accessories. The LS8 is available in two models; the LS8 402 (two switch unit) and the LS8 404 (four switch unit). Both LS8 models offer a NEMA 4 rated enclosure that is rated for dust, rain and hose directed water. Switch adjustment is achieved by simply loosening a cam detent screw and rotating the switch trip cam to the desired position.

LS9 Limit Switch The LS9 limit switch is recommended for general purpose applications that require between two to seven switches. Miter gear boxes used in such systems effectively raise unevenly distributed loads. When driven shaft turns per inch of travel are the same, total synchronization is assured because all models have a uniform lifting speed. Arrows in assembly drawings below indicate shaft rotation. S PECIALTY PRODUCTS—J OYCE ANODE JACKS Machine screw anode jacks from Joyce precisely lower aluminum smelting anodes—and they’re available in the configuration your system requires, including jack castings, base dimensions and screw ends. Joyce anode jacks are “overbuilt” to handle overload conditions and prevent damage from “highjacking”. For screw protection, choose aluminized fiberglass boots rated to 450° F or traditional aramid fiber wiper packing rated to 500° F. Viton® dual spring lip seals protect the input shafts: one seal retains grease in the housing while the other excludes alumina dust. Heat treated alloy steel worm shafts, aluminum bronze worm gears and tapered roller or ball bearings help assure long-lived durability. Select forged or fabricated rod eyes, depending upon your requirements. Compared to ordinary jacks, you get extended gear life thanks to a 27% increase in gear center distance. Machine cut threads provide lead accuracies of better than .002" per foot (compared to up to .010" for rolled threads) to allow precise anode positioning throughout the travel range. All Joyce anode jacks are self locking under all load conditions for an extra measure of control and safety.

S PECIALTY PRODUCTS– S ELF L EVELING S YSTEMS Joyce Self-Leveling Systems Self Leveling Programmable System when used with a suitable assembly jig, assures close-tolerance repeatability despite subtle out-of-level changes caused by heavy workpiece loading/unloading, vibration, sound resonance— even earthquake activity—that disturbs a normal jig’s tool-to-workpiece positioning. These systems are ideal wherever very tight tolerances are critical. Joyce jacks are integral parts of this closed-loop monitoring and control system that can sense out-of-level to within .001O (.002" within 10 feet), and automatically adjust all jacks to re-establish a level condition. Joyce Self Leveling Systems can achieve a level condition with a greater degree of accuracy than manual adjustment methods. Automatic re-leveling not only saves costly man hours, but eliminates much of the assembly line downtime that results from labor-intensive manual leveling. The installation shown features a six-axis drilling machine mounted in a frame supported by six jacks. A control system coordinates the independent movement of each jack to achieve a level condition along a single plane. An integrated system of electronic levels regulates the travel of each jack to exacting tolerances. Self Leveling Systems can accommodate from two to twenty-six jacking points. Multiple systems can be tied together for more jacking points.

Available in machine and ball screw designs these heavy-duty actuators can handle loads of up to 2000 pounds. Joyce actuators are offered in two distinct versions-Motorized and Integrated. Joyce Motorized Actuator models are available in 500 and 1500 pound capacities and 115-volt AC or 12-volt DC designs. 115 VAC motor is an enclosed, permanent split capacitor induction type. Load/no-load speeds are approximately equal. The motor is equipped with a thermal overload device that opens and resets automatically. Standard motor requires 25 µF capacitor supplied by the customer or Joyce. Note: Capacitor is supplied with the purchase of a Joyce controls package.

12 VDC motor is totally enclosed, weather resistant, permanent magnet type. Magnets act as a secondary brake for added safety. This type of motor is smaller, cooler running, more efficient and has higher duty cycles than series-wound motors. Lower current draw provides for longer battery life. The Motor is also equipped with a thermal overload device that opens and resets automatically. The rotation is reversible by reversing the two color-coded leads, and torque is the same in either direction.

115 VAC motor is an enclosed, permanent split capacitor induction type. Speeds remain approximately constant regardless of the load. The motor is equipped with a thermal overload device that opens and resets automatically. The standard motor comes complete with heavy-duty capacitor. (90µF)

12 VDC motor is totally enclosed, weather resistant, permanent magnet type. Magnets act as a secondary brake for added safety. This type of motor is smaller, cooler running, more efficient and has higher duty cycles than series-wound motors. Lower current draw provides for longer battery life. The Motor is also equipped with a thermal overload device that opens and resets automatically. The rotation is reversible by reversing the two color-coded leads, and torque is the same in either direction. Note: Some actuator surfaces may reach 230° F during operation at or near maximum duty cycle. All ratings are nominal and based on the actuator being broken-in for approximately 2500 inches of travel. Because jacks selected for such systems have uniform lifting speeds and are fully synchronized, unevenly distributed loads can be raised, lowered and positioned in unison. Jacks of differing capacities may be used in the same system as long as driven shaft turns per 1" of travel are the same.
