Benefits of using an Epoxy Backboned Vinylester Resin over typical Vinylester and Polyester Resins according to a large composites material supplier: Degradation from Water Penetration An important property of any resin, particularly in a marine environment, is its ability to withstand degradation from water penetration. All resins will absorb some moisture, adding to a laminate’s weight, but what is more significant is how the absorbed water aects the resin and resin/fiber bond in a laminate, leading to a gradual and long-term loss in mechanical properties. Both polyester and vinyl ester resins are prone to water degradation due to the presence of hydrolysable ester groups in their molecular structures. As a result, a thin polyester laminate can be expected to retain only 65% of its inter-laminar shear strength after immersion over period of one year, whereas an epoxy laminate immersed for the same period will retain around 90%. Osmosis All laminates in a marine environment will permit very low quantities of water to pass through them in vapor form. As this water passes through, it reacts with any hydrolysable components inside the laminate to form tiny cells of concentrated solution. Under the osmotic pressure generated, more water is then drawn through the semi-permeable membrane provided by the gelcoat in an attempt to dilute this solution. This water increases the fluid pressure in the cell.


Eventually the pressure will distort or burst the gel coat, leading to a characteristic “chick-pox” surface. To delay the onset of osmosis, it is necessary to use a resin that has both a low water transmission rate and high resistance to attack by water. A polymer chain having epoxy linkages in its backbone is substantially better than polyester or vinylester systems at resisting the effects of water.

What is ECR glass? Traditional E-glass is a kind of  "electronic" glass with good water-resistance, insulation, and high mechanical strength. To simplify the E-glass production, manufacturers add B2O3 and fluorine in the glass batch. Therefore particles containing B2O3 and volatile of fluorine are released into the atmosphere during the glass melting process. To reduce environment pollution, ECR glass comes into being. Environmentally friendly ECR glass is similar to E-glass but without boron and fluorine.

Due to the removal of B2O3 and fluorine in the glass formulation, the chemical resistance (including water-resistance, acid-resistance and alkali-resistance) is greatly improved especially its acid-resistance.

Higher temperature resistance because the softening point of ECR glass is 40-500 degrees C higher than E-glass

ECR Glass has better dielectric strength, lower electrical leakage, and higher surface resistance.

FRP pipe: Compared with E-glass the FRP pipe made from ECR glass enjoys better acid resistance. In many countries, especially in Middle East countries, the sewage pipes must be made with ECR glass or by OC's advantex glass fiber

Marine: Compared with E-glass, some FRP products mainly made with ECR Glass (such as Chopped Strands Mat, Woven Roving, and Spray-up roving) enjoy better seawater resistance in marine applications made with these ECR materials.

Rich resin FRP field such as the liners of FRP pipes, acid resistant storage tank mainly use surface veil ,chopped strand mat, woven roving and combo mat.

Pultrusion FRP products: pultrusion products made by ECR glass enjoy better acid resistance, insulation, tensile strength and modulus. Acid-resistant epoxy insulation rod must be made by ECR glass.
