“Q

uit your job and move to the mountains,” touted legendary filmmaker Warren Miller during his classic ’80s ski movies. For a large percentage of today’s year-round population in Lake Tahoe, that’s exactly what they did. Six-

figure careers and college degrees were put on hold to chase the mountain dream. Surrounded by the highest concentration of ski resorts in the country, it would be no coincidence if Lake Tahoe was home to the highest volume of overeducated bartenders and ski instructors just about anywhere.

With the evolution of technology and the ability to work from anywhere, the

mountain lifestyle dilemma of yesteryear has become much less arduous. Instead of giving it all up to ski by day and wait tables by night, today’s Tahoe ski bum might come in the form of a Google engineer or tech entrepreneur.

Making the balanced mountain life that much easier, community work spaces

like the Mountain Lab in South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Mill Collective on Tahoe’s North

Shore have evolved to inspire creative growth and local involvement. Most recently we watched a ski shop in Incline Village take on the shape of a start-up accelerator, called Elevate Blue, where CEOs and engineers pride themselves on having “the best of both worlds—a picture-perfect setting on one of the purest lakes in the world, plus regular trips to Silicon Valley for education, meetups and social events.” And how can we argue?

On a corporate scale, Switch’s new data center and Tesla’s new 3,000-acre site

just outside of Reno, Nevada, are contributing to the region’s technology renaissance and economic vitality. Since 2011, the “Biggest Little City in the World” has recruited about 100 companies to locate or expand to the area, offering more than 10,000 new jobs, with many more to follow.

San Francisco Bay Area and foreign buyers are taking notice. Between the

outdoor lifestyle, natural beauty and Nevada’s tax hospitality (see page 65), Lake Tahoe is being taken seriously as a place to relocate, diversify and/or explore a slower pace of life. And for those who seek it, Tahoe is a place to indulge in a low-profile, laid-back luxury lifestyle.

Coming from frenzied real estate markets defined by multiple offers and

skyrocketing prices, Bay Area millennials are finding the Tahoe region to be a welcome alternative for homeownership—a place where you really can have it all. 1 November 5 DIAMONDS ARE FOR CHARITY

Held at the Grand Sierra Resort, this black tie fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House was hosted in collaboration with Sierra Sotheby’s International Realty, Jaguar Land Rover of Reno and Mountain Living. With the who’s who of Reno in attendance, this event offered a first-time preview of the new James Bond film, Spectre, followed by a Champagne Diamond Dive, Tahoe Blue Vodka martini bar, dessert and silent auction.

2 February 13 BLACK TIE & TAILS GALA Held annually at the Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, this black-tie-optional event draws over 360 guests, many with their canine companions. Guests are greeted by a Hollywood-style red carpet entry, immediately followed by the swankiest of champagne and hors d’oeuvre receptions, complete with passed appetizers for the dogs and an elegant dining experience atop the Northstar California resort. 3 March 19 SHANE MCCONKEY LEGACY GALA

Now in its sixth year, this costumed gala features a different theme every year ranging from Arabian Nights to Studio 54. The event includes drinks, appetizers and dancing alongside impressive live and silent auctions that have raised over $250,000 in support of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe among other notable charities. T

here are no hard and fast rules (or any rules for that matter, other than those of common sense and good manners) for what to drink when winter is upon us. The wine you choose has as much to do with your agenda as it does your meal. What you select to accompany a Tuscan white bean soup might be different from the wine you would choose for après ski on the deck, full moon ice-skating, or to serve surprise drop-in guests. Big, hearty reds are the traditional go-to, but winter whites certainly have a place at the table, and of course there’s Champagne and sparkling wine season—officially November 1 through January 1. In keeping with this cold time of year, here are some suggestions to pair with some favorite (or not so favorite, but unavoidable nonetheless) wintry situations. Starting with the holidays, first up, we have Thanksgiving. For this favorite holiday and favorite meal of the year, I drink my favorite wines. For my family, that means a sparkling wine to start, followed by a fun white—usually a Riesling but sometimes a dry Gewurztraminer—and finishing with Pinot Noir. All of these wines are fairly light in body and richness. The meal itself tends to be heavy enough, and I don’t need any more reasons to wear waistband-forgiving clothes. These are also very flexible wines: Rieslings, Gewurztraminers and Pinot Noir are all malleable enough to contend with nuts, cheese, cranberries, fruit salad, green salad, green beans, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy and turkey all at the same time. Christmas could be a similar story, unless you prefer red meat for this meal. A beautiful, simple roast really shines with a not-so-simple Cabernet. Paired with one of my favorite Christmas desserts, walnuts and blue cheese, the Cabernet is also perfect. For those who really love the sweets, Port is a great choice. And if you’re like me, Champagne is a must on Christmas Eve, after the kids are abed and there’s still a pile of wrapping to do. With the holiday mayhem behind us, now we can get down to the business of simply enjoying day-to-day winter living. Nights are long enough to actually accomplish the winter checklist: eat, drink, talk, read and lounge by the fire. These are the nights that the classic big, red winter wines really earn their keep. It may be a super cliché to recommend a berry-ful, spicy, thick Zinfandel or Syrah to sip by the fire, but it is also hard to beat. Clichés exist for a reason. There is nothing more pleasant than being snug and slightly buzzed while the wind howls around the icy eaves. On the occasions when we are blessed with lots of shoveling and/or snowblowing, white wine is a great choice. Yes, it is cold and blowing, but you are working up some serious heat. Half an hour of legitimate shoveling equals approximately one glass of well-deserved Chardonnay. By the by, much maligned Chardonnay is really a wine for all seasons. It can be rich and spicy for winter and fall sipping, but it is equally available in zippy, refreshing summer versions. If you think you don’t like Chardonnay, you probably haven’t been talking to the right wine guy. And finally, the best case/worst case winter scenario that demands a glass or two of wine: you are snowed in. This wine choice depends a lot upon circumstances. Are you alone? With your in-laws who are visiting for the holidays? Is it just you and your true love? Regardless of the scenario, the answer is simple: drink what makes you happy. This could be your last night on earth so why not drink the good stuff? No matter the season, the key to enjoying wine is make sure you have something delicious on hand and enough to go around.
