volution” is a hot topic for me lately. Synonyms include “development, advancement, growth, rise, progress, and expansion.” At Sierra Sotheby’s International Realty we are constantly evolving through our different relationships, talent and technology. LAKE TAHOE FUN FACTS Tahoe is so clear that in some places objects can be seen to depths of over 70 feet. One reason is that 40 percent of the precipitation falling into the Lake Tahoe Basin falls directly upon the Lake.

Due to its depth, Lake Tahoe never freezes.

Lake Tahoe is as long as the English Channel is wide. If Lake Tahoe was emptied, it would submerge California under 15 inches of water.

Tahoe’s average annual snowfall is 409 inches.

Lake Tahoe’s greatest depth is 1,645 feet, making it the second deepest lake in the United States and the tenth deepest in the world. Crater Lake in Oregon is 1,930 feet. About 2.7 million visitors come to Lake Tahoe annually. Ladies and Gentlemen, You Have a Race! Miss Notre Dame was built and driven for the 1939 racing season by a 22 year old Dan Arena.

Historic Tahoe race boats will take center stage at this year’s South Lake Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic, being held at the Tahoe Keys Marina in South Lake Tahoe the weekend of July 29-30. Now in its 9th year, this charity event is hosted by The Northern California / Lake Tahoe Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society and sponsored by Sierra Sotheby’s International Realty. Proceeds benefit the South Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club and other worthy causes. This year’s Marquee class will be Race Boats featuring on-water speedsters of all ages and classes. “The preservation of this exciting class is considered very much in vogue in our boating world today and can be appreciated by all who attend,” says event co-organizer Lew Dobbins. Boat Racing has a prominent and rich history at Lake Tahoe. Tahoe’s Yacht Club hosted regattas in Tahoe City along with the famous Homewood and Chamber’s Landing race courses were highly anticipated summer spectacles. The racing spirit was high with fun classes for any boat. Favorites included the Junior Outboards and the Lake Tahoe Championship, while the chaos of the “Bang and Go Back” series was a crowd pleaser. In the 50’s and 60’s, Lake Tahoe was on the circuit of the APBA Unlimited which brought scores of fans and the unlimited hydroplanes, or “Thunder Boats”, as the big V-12 engined boats were called, to the shores of Tahoe. 

This year we will see some boats from that era that have not been seen in decades. The centerpiece of the show will be a replica of the 1939 Miss Notre Dame. While not a Tahoe boat, she has a very historic racing pedigree and carries her original 1927 Duesenberg W-24 engine. The original (third) Miss Notre Dame was built and driven for the 1939 racing season by a 22-year-old Dan Arena for owner Herbert Mendelson and would wear the racing number G-5. She can be seen and heard running this year at the show.  “We have listened to your requests and have put together a couple of nice surprises for this year,” says Dobbins. “We’re going to have fun with the race boat theme this year by inviting race boats from any class or year of racing.” As compared to the annual Concours d’Elegance on Tahoe’s North Shore, says Dobbins, this South Shore event is less stringent. There is no screening process to show a boat here, unlike the vetting process used by the Concours. “The event is as much about just having a good time, educating the public, and developing a community around historic boat culture as it is about presenting a perfect vessel,” says Dobbins. “It’s all about sharing a passion and having fun.” For those interested in participating, he says, “It does not matter if you have the family runabout that occasionally raced or an unlimited hydroplane, this is the place for you. Of course we always love to see any of your classic wood or early generation fiberglass boats.”

CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE The 44th annual Concours d’elegance will again be staged at the historic Obexer’s Boat Company in Homewood, California on Lake Tahoe’s beautiful West Shore with the two-day show open to the public on Friday, August 12, and Saturday, August 13. In honor of this boat’s 80th anniversary, this year’s marquee class will be the iconic Chris Craft Racing Runabouts 1936 – 1954. Concours Judges from throughout the United States will have already begun their work using the Foundation’s own nationallyacclaimed 100 point system and score sheet. Their collective goal: to reward those who have restored their boats to the highest level of authenticity and standard as they appeared when they were shipped from the factory. Because multiple first, second and third-place awards can be won in each class, each boat is judged on its own merit and only compared to other boats when selecting Perpetual awards. The Exhibitors’ Barbecue and Awards Presentation on Friday evening, August 12, is just one of the social events surrounding the Concours. A gala Opening Night Dinner and Dance kicks off Wooden Boat Week, with a Men’s Grill, Ladies’ Luncheon and Fashion Show, and Woodie Over-The-Bottom following—all events open to the public. 44 Years of Shakespeare on the Lake Entertainment, food, family, and friends converge under the stars on the scenic shores of Lake Tahoe this summer as the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival (LTSF) launches another playful spin on classic Shakespeare and Broadway. Set against Lake Tahoe’s East Shore backdrop and a starry sky, this annual event is a Tahoe summer must-do. The season-long series showcases live entertainment seven nights a week, July 8–August 21, 2016 at Sand Harbor in Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park. Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival’s 44th year is headlined by productions of The Comedy of Errors, Shakespeare’s double dose of laughter, and Forever Plaid, a pitch-perfect jukebox musical, and is rounded out by the Showcase Series line-up. LTSF Producing Artistic Director, Charles Fee, will direct The Comedy of Errors, and Victoria Bussert will direct Forever Plaid. The headline productions will be performed in rotating repertory Tuesdays through Sundays at 7:30 pm. Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors promises a double dose of laughs.

When two twin brothers and their two twin servants are unexpectedly reunited after three decades apart, an unsuspecting port city is torn apart at its seams. Design-inspired by Rio de Janeiro’s colorful Carnival celebration, this production is sure to delight. With a zany cast of unforgettable characters, myriad mistaken identities and contagious musical rhythms, Shakespeare’s comedy delivers triumphantly on its famous title. Forever Plaid offers a heavenly musical experience. One stormy night in the 1960s, four eager singers known as The Plaids met their untimely ends in a cherry red, 1954 Mercury on the way to their first big gig. In 2016, this quartet of comic crooners gets one last chance to return from the afterlife to do the show they never got to perform. The Plaids deliver delightfully with playful patter and angelic voices in a show that will have audiences rolling in the aisles when they’re not humming along to the great nostalgic pop hits of the 1950s. (Forever Plaid is presented through special arrangement with Music Theater International. All authorized

performance materials supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com. The show was written and originally directed and choreographed by Stuart Ross. Musical continuity supervision and arrangements are by James Raitt.
