I

n this issue of Tahoe Legacy magazine, we pay tribute to Lake Tahoe’s wooden boat culture. We also look at some of Tahoe’s top summer events alongside a guide to outdoor music, farmer’s markets and July 4th activities around the Lake. Heralded as one of the most popular times of the year at the Lake, Independence Day in Tahoe is a region-wide celebration of freedom that blends small-town charm with festivities and a fireworks display known to be the “biggest spectacle West of the Mississippi”. In the spirit of the July 4th holiday, at Sierra Sotheby’s International Realty we take off our hats in honor of those who have made this fortunate Tahoe lifestyle possible. Special recognition goes to our very own Bob Wheeler, Managing Broker of our Incline Village Office. A decorated veteran and retired member of the U.S. Air Force’s elite Pararescue force, parachuting into the Lake Tahoe basin was Wheeler’s first introduction to the Lake; an experience that remained with him throughout his service career. After 20 years of Pararescue service, Bob later settled at Incline Village where he has been recognized as Citizen of the Year for Incline Village/Crystal Bay Chamber of Commerce, the Realtor of the Year for the Incline Village Board of Realtors and the recipient of the distinguished Don Beck Award for his efforts in protecting property rights. Wheeler’s community service includes 22 years as a Rotarian and a past President of the Rotary Club of Tahoe-Incline. He was the Grand Marshall of the 2012 Fourth of July celebration parade and the 2012-2015 President of the Incline Village/ Crystal Bay Veterans Club. In collaboration with the Incline Village/Crystal Bay Veterans Club and Nevada’s Governor Brian Sandoval, Bob Wheeler has been instrumental in helping to proclaim July 4, 2015 as Major Arthur Neil Black Day, to be announced during a 2015 Independence Day ceremony in Incline Village. Major Black, a retired member of the U.S. Air Force, was held in captivity as a POW for 2,703 days; the longest time served by a United States countrymen. With his 32 years of real estate sales and service and a reputation built on honesty and integrity, Bob Wheeler has played an integral role in the phenomenal growth and success Sierra Sotheby’s has experienced over the past year. THE AMERICAN CENTURY CELEBRITY GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

OSCAR DE LA RENTA FASHION SHOW

Held at Edgewood Golf Course on Tahoe’s South Shore, The American Century Celebrity Golf Championships is one of the most anticipated spectator events of the summer. Edgewood’s 17th hole located on the shores of Lake Tahoe is a huge draw for event goers in hopes of a handshake, an autograph or a photo opportunity with celebrity players like Marcus Allen, Charles Barkley, John Elway, Jerry Rice, Pete Sampras, Bode Miller, Trent Dilfer, or Larry the Cable Guy, to name a few. Regarded as a top summer golf and beach party, this NBC televised event also has a notable charitable element. Since the tournament’s inception in 1990, the event has raised approximately $4.2 million for a range of national and local non-profits. Previous beneficiaries include the Uniformed Firefighters Association Scholarship Fund, Fallen Patriot Fund, Lake Tahoe Fire Relief Fund (Angora fire), Autism Speaks, LIVESTRONG Foundation, American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Expect Miracles Foundation, United Negro College Fund and Boys & Girls Club.

Rub elbows with fashion/design elite at the Oscar de la Renta fashion show held annually at a private lakefront estate on the stunning shores of Lake Tahoe. The famed designer showcases his collection at the annual fundraiser benefiting the League to Save Lake Tahoe. Following the presentation, guests are treated to a sitdown luncheon, a live auction, and an exclusive backstage shopping extravaganza. Guests at this year’s event will witness the future of the timehonored Oscar de la Renta fashion house when Saks Fifth Avenue introduces Oscar’s hand-chosen successor Peter Copping, who will present his 2016 Resort Collection. Guests will celebrate the countless contributions of a fashion icon with a retrospective of his Collections. The benefit, now in its 46th year, dates back to the late sixties, when designer Bill Blass unveiled his creations to loyal clients and close friends. Since then, the tradition has evolved into one of the most widely anticipated events of the year, with all proceeds going to preserve the natural resources of the beloved Lake. GLENBROOK RODEO & CELEBRITY DINNER

PARASOL TAHOE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ANNUAL FUNDRAISER

Each July, Shakespeare Ranch on Tahoe’s East Shore opens their doors to the Keep Memory Alive Foundation’s annual Summer Social and Rodeo featuring a weekend of fun and fundraising. The fun begins with an all-out rodeo on Friday, and ends with a gourmet dinner with celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse and private performance by headliner entertainment on Saturday. Past headliners have included Robin Williams, Jay Leno, Lionel Richie, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Kenny Loggins and the band America. Proceeds from the events support the work of Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in its research into degenerative brain disorders and the pursuit of enhanced treatments. Dating back to the early 1940’s, the Glenbrook Rodeo was an annual highlight until it was discontinued in 1965. The current Shakespeare Ranch owners resurrected the rodeo in 2000 featuring bull and bronco riding, ribbon roping and barrel racing. The event also includes carnival games and a silent auction featuring an incredible variety of luxury gifts ranging from jewelry and travel packages to sports memorabilia. Held at historic Shakespeare Ranch located in Glenbrook, Nevada, The Parasol Tahoe Community Table offers an opportunity for guests to experience the amazing Shakespeare Ranch up close and personal. The evening begins in the grand courtyard with cocktails and canapés, then guests move inside the spectacular entertainment barn where award-winning Chef Roland Passot prepares an exclusive gourmet dinner. French-born Chef Passot is owner of San Francisco’s famed La Folie where he showcases his own personal style of cooking. Tahoe’s Wooden Boat Culture BY CHERIE LOUISE TURNER

Classic wooden boats remind us of a time when fashion and function held equal sway. Not only were these boats the fastest in the water in the early part of the last century, they were suave and stunning to behold. Wooden boats are as classically elegant as an art deco statuette. The experience of riding in one over the crystal clear water of Tahoe or even just the sight of one gracefully speeding across the lake evokes feelings of yesteryear; it brings history to life. Wooden boat shows, like the upcoming South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic, July 24–25 at the Tahoe Keys Marina in South Lake Tahoe and the Concours d’Elegance, August 7–8, at Obexer’s Marina in Homewood, provide a venue where both experts and casual connoisseurs alike get the opportunity to view these antique crafts in their finest condition: brass is shined to its brightest sheen, wood is varnished to bring out the deepest hue of the grain, and engines are buffed to their greatest gleam. Additionally, each event has a charitable side (see sidebar on page 11); the events give to the community in more ways than one. For the shows, the boats are judged on a 100-point scoring system, focused on authenticity and like-new appearance, and many of these boats, several of which date back to the 1930s, meet that standard or at least come amazingly close. The judges take into account every authentic or faux detail, from noting if the drive on the screw heads is correct, to the color of the bilge paint, to the pattern of the upholstery. Lake Tahoe boasts a long and prestigious wooden boat culture; racing woodies, as they’re known, at the lake dates back to

the 1910s. It’s also been home to many unique boats such as the world-renowned Thunderbird (on the cover), which was commissioned by the legendary George Whittell specifically for Lake Tahoe and has been called one of the most elegant vessels crafted in the twentieth century. The speedy Hornet II (and after World War II known as Fleur de Lac), owned by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser, also called the lake home. And this is not to mention the numerous Chris Crafts, Gar Woods, Rivas, and other eye-catching woodies that have and do cruise the lake every summer. Couple that strong history and ongoing love of these boats with the jaw-dropping beauty of the lake, and it’s no wonder why these shows attract some of the best boats in the world.

CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE Now in its 43rd year—the event started as a get-together of boat enthusiasts, mostly from the Tahoe Yacht Club—the highly prestigious Concours d’Elegance attracts some of the most beautiful and most unique boats to be found, anywhere. It’s a rare opportunity to get such an up-close view, and also to interact with boat enthusiasts, collectors, and restorers of the highest caliber. Attendees can expect to take in the sleek and shining beauty of over fifty crafts of various sizes, makes, and ages, which are competing for the honors in various categories, including, among others, Most Elegant Boat of Show, Best Original Tahoe Boat, and Best Engine of Show, as well as several “best of” awards for particular makes of boat. Additionally, each year there is a Marquee category that focuses on a particular type of boat or aspect of a boat; this year’s Marquee Class is vintage V12 engine–powered boats. These massive engines are distinctive for their size as well as their signature roar. And, Lake Tahoe likely has more V12 engine–powered vessels in regular use than anywhere else in the world, such that this category highlights one of the truly rare aspects of Tahoe’s boat culture. In addition to boat viewing, there will be a large vendor area and live music. And lest anyone be concerned about parking, several options will be available, including a shuttle that will travel along the West Shore to pick up those who’ve parked far away, and public buses will be running frequently from Tahoe City. But truly the best option will be the water taxi that will be running from the North Shore directly to the Obexer’s pier. And for those who want to experience the thrill of riding in a wooden boat, the Maritime Museum and Hinckley Yachts will be offering rides to the public. Photo credit: Top left - h2omark.com. SOUTH TAHOE WOODEN BOAT CLASSIC Over on Tahoe’s South Shore, the 8th annual South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic will be hosted at Tahoe Keys Marina. Similar to the Concours, attendees can expect to see numerous examples of antique boats; roughly seventy vessels are expected to be on show. The boats will be judged and awarded in a number of categories, such as Most Original, Best Transom Art, and Most Improved Boat; this year’s theme category (this event’s marquee-like class) is “50s & Fins,” celebrating the stylish designs of that mid-century decade. The similarities largely end there; as notes event co-organizer Lew Dobbins, the judging at the South Shore event is less stringent than at the West Shore event; also, there is no screening process to show a boat here, unlike the vetting process used by the Concours. “The event is as much about just having a good time, educating the public, and developing a community around historic boat culture as it is about presenting a perfect vessel. Boat owners welcome questions and most are happy to let attendees get into the boat,” says Dobbins. “It’s all about sharing a passion and having fun.” Additionally, Dobbins encourages exhibitors to show not only woodies but also first-generation fiberglass boats and antique metal-hulled boats. The Maritime Museum will also be offering boat rides here, and festivities will be aplenty. And, to go along with the ’50s theme, Dobbins says there will be a push toward an Elvis theme; who knows, he may even show up. Preserving such history and appreciating the exquisiteness of the past is what these events are all about. For those already initiated as well as those new to wooden boats or even just those who are curious, these events are a rare chance to experience a bounty of unique treasures.

TAHOE’S WOODEN BOAT SHOWS GIVE BACK

ach of the parent organizations of Tahoe’s two prominent wooden boat shows, the Tahoe Yacht Club for the Concours and the Northern California/Lake Tahoe chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society for the South Shore show, have charitable arms, and as such both events donate funds generated to local nonprofits (the South Shore event is even subtitled as “A Vintage Boat Show for Charity”); as Concours Chairman Doug Hall says, “We leave the money in the [Tahoe] Basin.” Both organizations focus on charities that are in line with preserving or educating about maritime culture, that share a similar philosophy or interest. Charities focused on by the Yacht Club are the Tahoe Maritime Museum, Thunderbird Lodge Preservation Society, North Lake Tahoe Historical Society, Tahoe Community Sailing Foundation, and Sierra State Parks Foundation. The Antique Boat Society donates to the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Heritage Foundation, Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe, and Ship 145 Sea Scouts of San Mateo, and to the Sierra State Parks Foundation and the Thunderbird Lodge Preservation Society. Your attendance at the annual summer boat shows helps to preserve and continue this unique aspect of Lake Tahoe’s historic maritime culture.

J

ust as electric cars, led by Tesla Motors, are setting the standard for luxury automobiles cruising the roadways around Lake Tahoe, electric sportboats will soon be de rigueur for boaters enjoying the lake itself. Clean, quiet, and elegant zero-emission watercraft are now available that can help keep the lake blue and the mountain air fresh, while enhancing the Tahoe experience for boaters, lakefront homeowners, and shoreside visitors alike. Tesla is already installing charging stations throughout the Lake Tahoe area; it will only be a matter of time before charging stations are available for electric boats at the lake’s numerous marinas, resorts, restaurants, and other popular lakeside venues. Most major marinas and lakefront homes already have electric power readily available at their docks. Recreational boaters in Europe have been adopting electric sportboats at a rapid pace, due to stringent government regulation. Most lakes throughout southern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland are strictly controlled; in many cases, the most cost-effective way to still enjoy an afternoon on the water is with an electricpowered boat. Boatbuilders in Europe have responded by developing very advanced electric sportboats that are approaching their gaspowered counterparts in performance and utility. Many of these are beautiful boats with traditional styling, yet constructed with modern materials and techniques and advanced electric propulsion.

Two excellent examples of electric sportboats ideal for Lake Tahoe come from Boesch Motorboote in Switzerland, and Ocean tec in Slovenia. Boesch is a fourth generation builder of traditional mahogany runabouts, in a style similar to those from the famous Italian builder Riva, whose boats from the 60’s are now a must-see at the popular annual Lake Tahoe Concours d’Elegance. Boesch is still building mahogany runabouts using traditional construction techniques, now combined with advanced materials that minimize maintenance. But what is most impressive is that the electric drive systems installed in these classically-styled boats deliver amazing performance; Boesch boats are even used for waterskiing competitions. Ocean tec is another unique European builder, delivering a boat that merges a throwback Tahoe style with modern propulsion. The CommuterCraft 22 was designed from the beginning for electric power; its designer took his inspiration from the “glory days” of Tahoe boating, when “Gentleman’s Racers” from famous names such as Hacker-Craft, Chris-Craft, Gar Wood and others graced the waters of Lake Tahoe. The CommuterCraft 22 merges classic styling, modern, lightweight carbon fiber construction, and an electric drivetrain, into a unique family cruising package. The graceful European boats are only part of the developing electric sportboat scene on Lake Tahoe. Several types of electric watercraft are available that allow you to enjoy a variety of activities on the water, while at the same time contribute to the goal of maintaining and improving the acclaimed clarity of the lake. Solar-electric dinghies, fishing skiffs, luxury pontoon boats, and even a high-performance 2-seat “sports coupe” speedboat are on the market and gaining widespread acceptance in environmentally-sensitive waters worldwide. These are all available to Lake Tahoe boaters today.
