SIERRA & PLUMAS COUNTY market update If the west’s wide-open spaces, towering peaks and ranch living is appealing, Sierra and Plumas counties can be a sublime spot to reside. Nestled amongst the ranchland and sprawling spaces beneath the Sierra peaks are a multitude of championship golf courses, including the only clubhouse Frank Lloyd Wright ever designed, historic resorts, and even the purported birthplace of downhill skiing in North America in Johnsville.

Neighboring Sierra and Plumas counties encompass the small towns of Quincy, Portola, Graeagle, Almanor, Sierraville and Downieville, among others. Many were thriving gold country communities in the 1800s and early 1900s. Gold was sought here, in an area of Plumas County locals today dub the “Lost Sierra” for its now-appealing remoteness, forgotten by many once Interstate 80 bypassed the region long ago. Sierra received the honors of California’s second least populous county in the last census, leaving plenty of beautiful open spaces on which to live and explore. These were prime hunting and fishing grounds for the native tribes prior to the miners traveling through the expanse. Riparian land abounds, with three forks of the graceful Feather River, the North Fork of the Yuba and other waterways coursing through regional history. More than 1,000 miles of rivers and lakes exist in the area, making it an ideal place for lovers of the outdoors. Boating, kayaking, horseback riding, hiking, rock climbing, fly fishing, mountain biking and road cycling are mere steps from any doorway. Historic structures offer residence still, while newer construction is seen peeking behind the endless pines. Staggeringly good real estate opportunities are found in this region, still off the radar of most homebuyers.
