Meanwhile, the latest home is the 1930s George Home and Cattle Complex, where A.P. and Marnie George operate a cattle ranch. A trip to the park is a trip through Texas history.

THE INCREDIBLES 2

Everyone’s favorite family of superheroes is back in “Incredibles 2” – but this time Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is in the spotlight, leaving Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell) and Dash (voice of Huck Milner) to navigate the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life. ou might remember Stafford Police Officer Ann Marie Carrizales. Back in 2013, she took two bullets at point-blank range and still managed to chase down the alleged gunman. For years, even before the shooting, Ann Marie suffered from headaches, neck, back and heel pain. “Pain is a real problem in this profession,” says Ann Marie, now with the Meadows Place Police Department. “We wear heavy vests and artillery belts. My pain was affecting my sleep. My doctors tried different medications and they worked ok, but I don’t like taking meds. After the shooting, my headaches got a lot worse. I suffered from PTSD, and headaches are a symptom. Even nearly four years later, I felt my emotional health was better, but my physical was not. So I resolved to live with the pain. This was my life now.” But a speaking engagement with the Sugar Land Rotary and Exchange Clubs changed Ann Marie’s life. Dr. Steve Harris of Sugar Land Health Center was in the audience that day. “Afterward he shot me an email,” says Ann Marie. “He said he was thinking of ways he could help me. I researched him and found he has a great reputation for natural pain relief, so I gave it a try.” At her very first appointment, Dr. Harris did a manual treatment that moved Ann Marie to tears. “Suddenly, my headache was gone. It was kind of like when your ear has been clogged forever and it pops. Suddenly you think, ‘I can hear.’ I couldn’t remember the last time I didn’t have a headache. I really didn’t mean to cry in front of Dr. Harris, but I was so beside myself and overcome with emotion. That night I slept all night. My husband couldn’t believe I didn’t take any medication.” A believer, Ann Marie started regular treatment with Dr. Harris. “The decompression treatments have done wonders for my back and neck, and laser treatments have helped my heel pain. Dr. Harris knows the body, and he explains in great detail what he is going to do and why. And it all makes sense. I like to watch him. Sometimes he closes his eyes when he’s working. He says his hands become his eyes. You can just tell he is working from his heart and soul. My whole

family now sees him. What he’s doing is good for the body and excellent for wellness, and his office is a safe place for me.” “I now know I do not have to live in pain, and I’m shouting it from the rooftops. Every law enforcement officer should know about this. This profession is hard on the body, but Dr. Harris is brilliant. What a blessing he has been to me. He’s improved my quality of life.”

healthreport Groundbreaking Expansion

Paul Forbes, Manager of Facilities; Lowell Stanton, Regional Vice President, Chief Financial Officer; Janet Leatherwood, Vice President, Chief Nursing Officer; Chris Siebenaler, Regional Senior Vice President, Chief Executive Officer; Sean Sevy, Director of Facilities; Marissa Benziger, Director of Facility Planning

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has begun a $60 million expansion project that will significantly enhance its women’s health services. The centerpiece of the plan is a new three-story, 30,500-squarefoot building and renovation of the existing Sweetwater Pavilion that will house the significantly larger Houston Methodist Childbirth Center at Sugar Land and an expanded Breast Care Center. The new building will connect to the existing Sweetwater Pavilion, the Cancer Center and Medical Office Building 2, and will house Houston Methodist Sugar Land’s women’s health “center of excellence” – featuring labor and delivery, breast care and cancer care in one

convenient, easily accessible location. “Fort Bend continues to be one of the fastest-growing counties in the U.S., and that growth is driving demand for women’s health services, especially labor and delivery,” said Chris Siebenaler, CEO of Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “In addition, we are seeing an increasing number of patients coming to Sugar Land for health care from communities outside of Fort Bend, including Waller, Austin, Brazoria, Wharton, Victoria and beyond. This expansion will not only increase our overall capacity for women’s services, but it also enables us to create a connected, collaborative center of excellence that benefits both patients and physicians.” Construction of the new building began in February 2018. Renovation of the existing Sweetwater Pavilion will be handled in stages to minimize impact on patient care. The first floor of the new building will house a relocated, expanded Breast Care Center, complete with state-of-the-art imaging technologies and a calm, comfortable, welcoming interior. The new Breast Care Center is expected to open in the second quarter of 2019. The second and third floors of the new building will connect to the current Sweetwater

Pavilion featuring the Childbirth Center, which should be completed by second quarter of 2020, with some sections opening earlier. “We are increasing the capacity of our Childbirth Center by 30 percent and updating our amenities and offerings at the same time,” said Siebenaler. “The expansion of our neonatal intensive care unit will also enable us to care for premature newborns at an even earlier stage than before. This is a critical need for our community and we will be the only hospital with a Level III NICU in Fort Bend so babies can remain close to home and their families while receiving a higher level of care.” To handle the increased capacity and enhance patient convenience, Houston Methodist Sugar Land has also completed a parking garage on the Sweetwater Boulevard side of the hospital campus that connects to Sweetwater Pavilion via a second-floor skybridge. The new garage includes 800 parking spaces. Construction of the garage was completed in March of this year. “This expansion of our physical space and our service offerings is yet another example of our commitment to meeting the health care needs of the community and delivering the best possible care close to home,” said Siebenaler. “We are excited to see this plan begin to take shape.” To learn more about Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, please visit houstonmethodist.org/ sugarland or visit our Facebook page at fb.com/methodistsugarland for the latest news, events and information. MASHING S night ut

Who can relate to having “one of those days”? Sometimes “those days” are many. Causing stress to slowly build up. Doing more harm than good. Some of us may go to the gym, go for a run, or have a drink.

The last two months I have shared “typical” date night ideas. This month, I’m changing things up and taking date night into a different direction. Now, before we go any further, there is NOTHING glamorous about this date night idea but you will probably have a SMASHING great time!

BUT, what if I told you that there was a place where you could take a baseball bat or sledgehammer and smash everyday items like a TV, dishes or plates to release some frustration? Would you believe me?

I first learned of Tantrums LLC, unique place in Houston, TX, while scrolling through Instagram. I saw some pictures and thought, “Wow, that’s really different!”. I was intrigued and wanted to learn more about it.

Well, there is!!

So, naturally, I decided to make it my monthly date night adventure with the hubby! When I first told him what we were doing he was so confused. Not fully understanding what we were going to be doing. When we arrived, we had to sign a waiver and also go through a quick safety training. We then got to pick a “weapon” of choice. I choose a steel bar and a golf club. Eye safety and gloves are a must before heading

unlike anything most people would ever experience, she wasn’t aware of the emotional journey her customers would bring with them when they entered her establishment. Some have experienced loss, heartbreak, financial issues, divorce, health issues, marriage strain, and many other life challenges. They come in thinking it will be fun to smash things but leave feeling like it was a therapy session of release. Letting everything out in those private rooms. Their hidden pain finally able to release itself. Letting go of some negative feelings and having fun while doing it.

Shawn Baker, the owner, took a major leap of faith when she opened up Tantrums LLC. Since her opening she has had thousands of people walk through her doors. Her business has been featured on print, radio, TV along with write ups in the Houston Press, The Houston Chronicle, The Houston Business Journal, The New York Daily News, The Wall Street Journal and many more. She was also featured on Top 10 Best Date Ideas on About.com! Shawn shared with me, that even though she always knew this would be

theguide Investment Funds Creating New Opportunities for Fort Bend by Jason Luthor

Residents of Fort Bend County may soon be looking at the arrival of new businesses and investments into their community. When the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 was passed, a part of the bill included the chance for states to apply for “opportunity zones.” These zones encourage private investments in cities, particularly parts of a city that have lagged behind economically while others have prospered. Opportunity zones work by creating a private pool of investment funds. Essentially, investors are encouraged to invest in a community. These investors are lured by the prospect of deferring taxes and reducing their capital gains taxes. The catch is that these investors have to put some of their earnings into the pool of Opportunity Funds. After a pool of funds have been

created, the investors work with local communities come together to decide what combination of infrastructure, housing, business, and other investments are needed inside of that community. Every group involved in the decision making come together to help decide what improvements are best. The chance to undergo community improvements is what makes opportunity zones so enticing for cities. However, not all parts of a city can become an opportunity zone. Only those parts of a city that are designated as low-income are eligible to become opportunity zones. Even then, only 25 percent of those low-income areas can be designated opportunity zones. The responsibility for calling for opportunity zones fell to Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who had

to submit a list of zones to the federal government. Abbott designated 628 areas across 145 Texas counties as opportunity zones. These areas typically suffered from higher unemployment, a smaller population, and even poor economic performance that happened because of natural disasters. As many people from Houston will attest, Hurricane Harvey was the perfect example of a natural disaster interrupting the local economy. Numerous parts of Houston and surrounding Harris county were named as opportunity zones. Now, five areas in Fort Bend County have been designated as opportunity zones. Parts of the county that will benefit from the designation includes tracts of land that stretch along Highway 36 west of Rosenberg. This land will include parts of Beasley and land moving north of Highway 90A, up to the Brazos River. Highway 36 is considered a driver of economic growth in Fort Bend county. Port Freeport operates close to the highway and several railroads that cross through the area are also sources of economic growth. As an already established source of growth for local commercial, industrial, and manufacturing interests, it’s the perfect place to begin new economic investments. However, it won’t be the only area of the county that benefits. Parts of Richmond along Highway 90 will also become opportunity zones, and another tract of land along Highway 90 and Highway 99 will also be welcoming new investors. Missouri City itself will be welcoming two new opportunity zones to encourage long term investment, which may lead to greater prosperity in the city. May 2018
