Join Carmel Ruggeri, owner of Sydney’s La Casa Ristorante as she takes you through her part of the world, her island… Sicilia.

Share a once in a life time experience in one of the worlds most quaint islands, where the mountains meet the sea and time has stood still. Immerse yourself in the Sicilian food and culture through Carmel’s eyes and that of the locals. Come and feast with Carmel’s family in their small fishing village of Scoglitti on the South Coast of Sicily. Learn to make gelato from a true gelato artisan. Watch traditional 70 year old matriachs of the village of Scoglitti make fresh pasta, pizza and bread in the wood fire ovens. Carmel will take you to the home of Modica Chocolate, local wineries, villages specialising in cheese making, olive oil – every stop a photo waiting to be taken. Joining Carmel on this trip of a lifetime is her old friend Gina Milicia, Australia’s photographer to the stars and fellow Sicilian. Watch and learn as Gina captures “moments in time” from this incredible island.

Catania To Scoglitti

Chiaramonte & Scoglitti

We meet at Catania and make our way to the undiscovered South of Sicily – a small fishing village called Scoglitti.

Today you will enjoy the steep climb as we make our way to the picturesque town of Chiaramonte the “Balcony of Sicily”. Home of Sicily’s famous Cacciocavallo cheese and we try olive oil native to this region. We also stop at a local winery.

Here we settle into our beach front Hotel on the Mediterranean Sea. An informal afternoon of bar hopping, walks through the village and tonight to start our culinary journey on this island, a welcome dinner is prepared.   Dinner

Tonight we feast at a local restaurant in Scoglitti where there will be entertainment and we will then enjoy the towns bustling Saturday night atmosphere. A stroll “The passeggiata” with the locals is a must.  Breakfast & Dinner

Friday 3 may Modica to Ragusa Ibla We’ll have a leisurely start to the day with the perfect espresso & breakfast of brioche and granita or cornetti before we head off to chocolate haven, Modica. Here we visit Antica Dolceria Bonajuto founded in 1880. The New York Times called it “…chocolate of astonishingly pure, powerful flavour…” We will try biscotti nucatoli, chocolate cannoli, chocolate liqueur, hot chocolate, white torrone and Modica’s famous ‘mpanatigghi – a minced meat and chocolate pastry. We leave Modica and head to the cobblestone town of Ragusa Ibla where time has stood still. Amazing photo opportunities here. We dine at one of Ragusa’s most quaint rustic restaurants.  Breakfast & Dinner

Sunday 5 may Scoglitti Today is all about family. This morning sip on cappuccinos in the piazza and photograph the locals as they make their way in their best attire to Sunday Mass. We then join Carmel’s family at their villa for a feast. Her Aunty’s show us how to make pasta, pizza & bread in the wood fire oven. A lesson of sausage making is also in store. Carmel’s cousin Pinuccia will also demonstrate the famous Bimby today making her delicious sweets. (In Australia we call it the Thermomix.) And yes there will be wine – in abundance. Free time tonight for more passeggiatas or if you have any room left after our lunch time feast grab a pizza or plate of Spaghetti di Mare from one of Scoglitti’s many fabulous restaurants, Il Sakalleo or Fichera. Finish off with amazing array of Gelato from Dolc Idea, one of Scoglitti’s most popular bars.  Breakfast & Lunch

This morning we meet a Gelato Artisan, Carmel’s cousin owner of Bar Riviera. He will take us through the process of gelato making and of course we get to sample some dairy goodness. Next we head to a Tomato farm on the Riviera of Gela. Gaetano Impoco’s family has been cultivating tomatoes for decades. We take a walk through the “serre” tomato houses. Photo opportunity here on the tractors and then we enjoy a BBQ by the sea. This afternoon we head to the famous Occhipinti Winery in Vittoria. We taste Arianna’s fabulous organic wine, Frappato & Nero D’avola. We make our way back to Scoglitti stopping at the memorable 17th Century castle, Castello Donnafugata for our last dinner in Ragusa.  Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Tuesday 7 may

Today we head to a local winery in one of Sicily’s most beautiful areas. Some of the wineries around here date back to the early 1800’s and the traditions of wine making have been handed down from generation to generation. The peculiar climatic conditions of the area and the volcanic soil are what make the production of Etna’s famous wines so desirable to the palate. We make our way back to Taormina stopping at many local produce farms on the way. This evening we will celebrate our holiday with a lavish farewell dinner and maybe a glass of wine or two.  Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Taormina & Giardini Naxos This morning we say goodbye to Ragusa and we head to Taormina in the provence of Messina, stopping on the way at the spectacular Alcantara Gorge. An opportunity for amazing photos here and of course we enjoy some local produce. Free time this afternoon to take a walk through the town of Taormina and tonight we dine at one of Taormina’s most fabulous restaurants, overlooking the whole coastline of Messina.  Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

It’s been a dream of mine for so long to take a group of my fellow Australian friends thru my island of Sicily and experiencing it the way I do. Sharing pure culinary local food and immersing them in the true rustic charm of Sicily. The cannoli, the cheese, the tomatoes, simple items you will never ever forget. My family will open their homes to you and let you enjoy the feast and warmth that I experience every time I visit. Sicily has many monumental ancient ruins that you could go and visit once our tour is over. There is so much to do and see on this picturesque island. I’m offering you a snippet of great food and inevitably pure enjoyment. The Sicilians are warm people and I promise that you will leave your heart there just as I have done so many times before.

I’m so excited to be a part of the Sicily Tour 2013 with my great friend ( and twin) Carmel Ruggeri.
