Celebrating Volunteers at the Spirit Awards! The contributions made by volunteers enhance the YMCA, enrich lives and make many programs and services available that otherwise would not exist. The Spirit Awards honor volunteers who have made an impact and who inspire others by giving of themselves selflessly to benefit the Y and its members.

“I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I do know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve”. - Dr. Albert Schweitzer www.somersethillsymca.org

Y volunteers Fox and Elsie Stoddard got into the spirit of the event and dressed the part at the Hawaiian themed Volunteer Spirit Awards.

In recognition of outstanding service and to celebrate the selfless spirit in which volunteerism is offered, the Y presented the first Volunteer Spirit Awards. The Spirit Awards was held on May 31 under a tent at the Somerset Hills YMCA, with approximately 200 guests in attendance. The first time event included a Hawaiian theme with volunteers being greeted with an ahola and a lai. Chair Elect of the Board of Directors, Jody D’Agostini, was Master of Ceremonies.

“The Y is a non-profit organization dedicated to social responsibility, youth development and healthy living,” commented Bob Lomauro, past President/CEO of the Somerset Hills YMCA. “Our ability to respond to the needs of our community lies in the hands of our volunteers, and our donors, who understand that when they make a contribution of their valuable time or treasure to the Y, they are helping to strengthen the community in which they live, work and play.” During the evening’s event, a new mural designed by Caren Frost Olmstead was dedicated to President/CEO Bob Lomauro, who retired at the end of August after 18 years of service. The mural depicts the rich 60 year history of the Y and runs along the hallway across from the wellness center. Over 130 volunteers participated in painting the mural and bringing it to life. For the complete list of Spirit Awards recipients, please see Page 2.

Message from our Past President I have had the extraordinary privilege to be the President/CEO of the Somerset Hills YMCA for the past 18 years. This position has provided me with a unique perspective and window into the heart and soul of the Somerset Hills community.

As my tenure as Chief Executive Officer has come to an end and I venture out to experience the next chapter of my life, I want to thank all Y members, friends and colleagues who have inspired and kindled the flame of gratitude in me.

I have witnessed countless acts of kindness, both small and large, and have seen both directly and indirectly the essence of a caring community.

Volunteerism is alive and well at the Somerset Hills YMCA.... keep it alive by continuing to model the way for our children! - Bob Lomauro

Cultural Awareness and Global Engagement Committee

This year alone, Nicole Robertson

While the Cultural Awareness & Global Engagement Committee name may be new, the work of bringing cultural awareness and global initiatives to the forefront is not new to the Somerset Hills YMCA.

“I am so pleased to call Nicole Robertson a member of the Y’s Gymnastics Department,” says Gymnastics Instructor, Dana Tabor. Nicole has been assisting the staff of the Y’s Gymnastics Department for the past two years.

has volunteered 246 service hours, a record for her school.

In the Fall of 2011, the Cultural Awareness & Global Engagement Committee was revitalized with a new commission. Committee Chair and member of the Y’s Board of Directors, Dr. Amita Dasmahapatra, brings a wealth of knowledge and passion for this work. The committee is made up of Y members who represent our diverse community: Board of Director volunteers Bob Raymar and Roseanne Mirabella, as well as long time committee members Jackie Fuchs and Susan Felter, and new committee members Rima Kahlil, Rosa Britez and Ximena Garcia. “The goal of the committee is to increase cultural competency and global engagement across all segments of the Somerset Hills YMCA to enable us to spread our mission and engage the diverse and changing communities of our service area,” says Amita.

At the age of five, Nicole began her involvement with the Y as a program participant and competed on our gymnastics team in 2008. Nicole soon decided that competitive gymnastics was no longer her goal. The idea of passing on her knowledge, sharing her passion and teaching skills became her focus. Nicole has been a wonderful volunteer helping the children learn new skills, expertly spotting them to ensure their safety and sharing her sense of fun. She has inspired many young children to be their best and to have confidence in themselves.

The committee has many other exciting initiatives such as Diversity Training for staff and volunteers and engaging our Hispanic/Latino and Asian Communities. The committee will also oversee our international Youth Service Learning trips and is currently organizing the 15th annual International Festival Day scheduled for Sunday, October 14th at the Y.

Annual Golf Classic On June 25th, the Somerset Hills YMCA hosted its 22nd Annual Golf Classic at Roxiticus Golf Club in Mendham, NJ. This year’s event was particularly exciting as the Y reached a milestone event fundraising goal of $100,000 for the Strong Kids Annual Campaign – the greatest amount ever raised at this event. Assisting with registration were volunteers Catherine Shih, Roseanne Mirabella, Y staff Jennifer Williford and, from Coach Braunsdorf, Lisa Nissel and Kristen Lyszczasz

The Strong Kids Annual Campaign ensures the Y can help those in the community who are most in need including, but not limited to, families facing financial hardship, children at risk, people with special needs and support for cancer patients. In 2011, the Somerset Hills YMCA provided over $950,000 in financial assistance and program subsidies through the Strong Kids Annual Campaign.

Much of the event success was due to the significant contributions of 23 sponsors, as well as community members and volunteers. The Y is especially grateful to the major event sponsors including Couch Braunsdorf Insurance as presenting Sponsor; Open Road Auto Group as Platinum and Hole-in-One Sponsor; and the Amato-Waldbauer Group, UBS and Peapack-Gladstone Bank as Gold Sponsors. Nearly 100 golfers participated in this year’s Annual Golf Classic which honored Bob Lomauro, President and CEO, who retired at the end of August after 18 years of service to the Somerset Hills YMCA. “We are thrilled with the success of the golf event. It is through the collective support of our sponsors and the community that we have been able to accomplish the monumental task of meeting our fundraising goal,” explains Tad Waldbauer, Chair of the Somerset Hills YMCA Board of Directors. “Their continued support allows the Y to give back to the community by helping the people who need it most.”
