Thank-you to all of the Seniors, Advertisers, and Community Groups who have worked so hard to bring the Southeast Texas Seniors Guide to Life. We have taken your special requests into account: senior friendly magazine size and font size, vivid color, and LOCAL news and information. Many have asked where they can get senior discounts, so we have made that a focus this issue. We hope you enjoy our a special veterans series, featuring interviews with Southeast Texas WWII, Korea, and Vietnam era veterans. Look for more great seniors information on our website:

Odyssey Hospice

Providing Care From the Heart

Today more than one in three Southeast Texans is caring for an ailing family member or friend. Many of these families are facing a serious, life-limiting illness for the first time. Families are often unsure of where they can get answers and support. For some of these families, hospice will be a blessing. Hospice allows seniors to deal with a serious condition or illness on their own times. Beaumont’s Odyssey Hospice helps Southeast Texas families by assisting seniors at the most challenging time of their lives. Odyssey Hospice assists SETX seniors with serious medical conditions who have: • Been told by their physician that their life expectancy is limited • Experienced multiple emergency room visits or hospitalization • Experienced great weight loss (clothes are noticeably looser). • Started spending most of their days in a chair or bed. Odyssey is often able to provide hospice care at little or no cost to SETX seniors or their families. Odyssey care providers can serve patients in their own homes, nursing homes, long-term care or assisted living facilities, or our Southeast Texas hospitals. Call Odyssey Hospice Southeast Texas to see if hospice is right for you. Phone: (409) 212-0020 Web: Toll Free: (800) 946-7742

Honoring Those Who Served George T. Sanner – U.S. Army Retired For some Southeast Texas seniors, military service was a calling they rose to in our nation’s time of need. For some, military service became a lifelong career. For George T. Sanner of Village Mills (Wildwood), service in the U.S. Army was a career that lasted almost three decades and that took him to three continents. George began his career in the Army with the Army Air Corps in Newfoundland. While in the Army Air Corps, Sanner served in the Military Police from 1947 - 1950. From the Army Air Corps, George moved into the regular Army where he served from 1950 – 1975. Sanner particularly enjoyed service in Germany where he was a 1st Sergeant with the CATC (Combined Arms Training Center). Service in Germany provided the opportunity to see some of Europe’s most beautiful landmarks including Neuschwanstein Castle, beautiful botanical gardens, and other magnificent historic sites. In Germany, George also formed close bonds with a

great group of servicemen. Sanner served two tours in Vietnam. His first was with the Vietnamese Regional Force and Popular Force (Similar to our National Guard) as an advisor. When their forces were called to the field, Sanner went with them. His second tour in Vietnam was with the 101st Airborne as an Operations Sergeant for the Battalion Staff. He was thankful to come home from Vietnam. George T. Sanner retired from the U.S. Army after twenty-eight years of service. He remains active in the VFW, which he recommends to those returning from service in Afghanistan and Iraq. The VFW serves as a spokesman for veterans at the National, State, and Local level, which all veterans benefit from. Sanner was originally a member of VFW Post 3106 in Leesville, LA before transferring his membership to VFW Post 1514 in Village Mills. Sanner is well known in his neighborhood, Wildwood, where he is affectionately referred to as “Mr. George”.

Momentum Healthcare

Helping SETX Seniors in Their Homes

Momentum Healthcare was started right here in Southeast Texas by the owner of a local medical supply company, Saul Avila. He heard over and over that seniors were looking for products and services that would allow them to stay in their homes longer, in surroundings they loved and where they felt the most comfortable and “at home”. Saul felt called to help create a service that would provide high quality non-medical care to seniors in their homes. Momentum Healthcare provides a wide range of services to Southeast Texas seniors: • Light housekeeping • Companionship • Personal Hygiene Care • Running Errands for Seniors • Diet Monitoring • Meal Preparation

Momentum’s care providers help SETX seniors have a clean, safe, healthy environment right at home. One of the services Momentum considers most important is working with each senior and their family to custom create a plan that will meet the senior’s needs. They don’t try to make a senior fit an existing care plan, they start from scratch with each senior to create a care custom plan. Momentum can also make changes right away as a senior’s needs change. For many seniors this kind of care will dramatically extend the amount of time they are able to remain at home. If you or a special senior in your life would benefit from an in home caregiver, contact Momentum and let them know how they can be of assistance. Momentum Health Care Services (409) 291-8880
