THE

REAL DEAL by Ankur Bhalla

8 - SHUFFLE MARCH 2013

SHUFFLEluxury AUTOMOBILES Two words that define motorcycles and the way the world rides on two wheels are Harley and Davidson that put together essentially stand for independence and freedom. Harley Davidson is not just the name of a company. It is a culture, it is the art of biking. Harley Davidson has been producing the finest motorcycles with the most awe inspiring

designs and of course the best engines ever since 1903. As stated earlier, Harley Davidson is not just the name of a company it is a culture, it is the art of biking. Harley Davidson was given access to India in exchange for export of Indian mangoes being resumed to the US. After this agreement in 2007 harley finally announced

its India headquarters (Gurgaon) in 2009 and it was inaugurated in 2010. Harley has offered 13 models under its belt starting with the entry level superlow displacing 883cc with V-twins at an entry level price of Rs. 5,71,000 and its range extends to the superlative street glide priced at Rs. 24,56,000 displacing a whopping 1690cc. Harley has 9 dealerships in the country covering all the major cities. The company’s latest offering FAT BOB is somehow a mix of street bob and fat boy, Harleys previous offerings thus giving it its name. Its a low sitting bike and seems imposing. It displaces 1690cc and uses a V-Twin to generate an astonishing 135Nm of torque. Recently Harley celebrated its 110th anniversary by organizing its first H.O.G. ( Harley owners group ) rally in Goa. It was a 4 day event commencing on the 31st of January and culminating on the 3rd of February. The event saw hundreds of Harley owners and their families and inauguration of the Goa dealership. H.O.G. rally is one of the signature events of H-D and adds to the pride of every Harley owner. Overall its been a pleasant journey for Harley and we hope that we get to see the smaller bikes with lesser displacement making it to the Indian market and see Harley penetrate into smaller cities and appealing to the masses. Let the mango man experience the best of what the great Harley Davidson has to offer.

B.A. Pass Shuffle brings to you excerpts of a freewheeling chat with debutante director Ajay Bahl on his upcoming film B.A. Pass and his views on various aspects of cinema. Interview by Akshay Singh. B.A. Pass won the Best Indian film and the best actor awards at the Osian’s Cinefan Film Festival 2012 and went on to screen at Montreal World Film Festival, St Peterburg intl Film Festival, New jersey South Asian Film Festival, Kolkata Intl Film Festival, Bengaluru Intl Film Festival and will be screening at the Transgressive South Asian Film Festival Paris and Jeonju Film Festival in South Korea before it’s Indian theatrical release in March.

then the best option is to do it yourself but you do have to be very careful that you are a director first and not get carried away by the visuals. On the physical front you have to deal with all the lighting logistics and yet be mentally very alert when actors start performing, being in focus overdrive can be exhausting sometimes.

ter the indie scene as no doubt it can be a very fulfilling experience and there is a certain vanity at play as an indie filmmaker which is very enticing. Actually the most magical time for a filmmaker exists between these two words: ACTION & CUT. The rest is pure perseverance and hard work even connivance, manipulation and deceit, all for a good cause in the end. To survive as an Indie filmmaker in addition to the qualities above, and this may sound very boring or obvious but one needs to posses a very thorough understanding of one’s craft. It is like you HAVE to learn the alphabets before venturing into any sort of creative writing. On a big film you have all sorts of people to help you out but an indie filmmaker is pretty much on his own so that makes it all the more important that he well versed with all the technical aspects of filmmaking. It actually sets you free to be innovative. It is common for people, in their passion and excitement to make films, to hurry up the process. Marketing a film is another world altogether and I don’t think that any Independent filmmaker, who has no access or does not wish to work with big stars, has any clue what the future of his film is going to be like. I am not talking about film festivals but of a mainstream commercial release. You can only hope that the story you have chosen to film will move others the way it moved you. Proper marketing of any film entails costs, which sometimes run many times over the

actual shooting budget of the film so procurement of funds is the main battle. In order to give your film a fair chance you need to create visibility in television, print and electronic media. Unfortunately the media does not distinguish between a 100 crore film and 1 crore film, the more you spend, the more you get. It is impossible for an independent filmmaker to compete with bigger budget mainstream films is this respect. Can mainstream cinema and parallel cinema co-exist or parallel cinema would always be treated as the step child? They have always co-existed and parallel cinema has always been somewhat of a step child but

things are changing, the way filmmakers are making films is changing. To sustain the attention of a wider audience we need to make films that are engaging, tell stories that move and effect people. There is so much human drama in the world around us! Art cinema, which is sometimes confused with parallel cinema, is great and is truly a very accomplished and a sophisticated form but you cannot expect it to really flourish in the mainstream because it is just too personal. Parallel cinema on the other hand has the ability to reach out but it needs to be more focused and selective about its content because that is where it can truly usurp the mainstream films.

When is B.A Pass slated for its Box Office release? What are your expectations on the commercial front? B.A. Pass is slated to release in March 2013, and the film has been given an ‘A’ rating (which we ourselves had requested for)and is to be released without a single cut, which speaks volumes about the sensitivity the Censor board has shown towards it’s subject matter. I am hugely excited that the audience will get to see the film exactly as I had intended. On the commercial front, one always hopes that people will relate to the story as you have, while choosing it and the honesty and the integrity of the work transcends on to them. That is all you can hope for.

SHUFFLEculture MOVIES Shukla (Chak de India, Khamosh Pani) and Shadab Kamal (Chittagong) we were lucky to have other brilliant actors like Dibyendu Bhattacharya (Dev D, Black Friday) Rajesh Sharma (No One Killed Jessica, Dirty Picture) and Geeta Sharma Aggarwal (Chillar Party) .

Throw some light on your film B.A Pass? How did the idea germinate? B.A. Pass is a story of a destructive relationship between a young boy in search his identity and a married, elder woman bored with her existence. It is also a comment on the moral fabric of middle class Delhi. It is set in and around the Paharganj area. The protagonist Mukesh (Shadab Kamal) is a boy lost in the scramble for his own gratification and the responsibility he bears for his family . Everything changes for him when he meets Sarika (Shilpa Shukla), an attractive older woman and a friend of his aunt at a kitty party. From there the story slowly de-

scends into a scary world of sex, corruption and deception. 1The idea of B.A.Pass germinated after I read this amazing anthology of Noir stories ‘Delhi Noir’ by HarperCollins (2010) I got really attracted to the story ‘The Railway Aunty’ in it by Mohan Sikka, a New York based author of Indian Origin. The story with its complex alluring characters, twisty plot and compact scale was just right for an indie. I spoke to Mohan and acquired rights to make it into a film. Ritesh Shah adapted it for the screen and we were on our way. B.A pass has some not so familiar faces but promising talents. Throw some light on the cast. In addition to Shilpa

Most of our readers are not aware of you. Tell us something about you background. How did the passion of films grip you? I have been brought up in Delhi and was a national level cricketer. Disillusioned by the politics in sport, I quit and dropped out of high school and meandered through various professions from music piracy to manufacturing jeans till I found a book on filmmaking at a friend’s house. That changed my life to use a cliché. I searched on the internet and got hold of as many books on filmmaking as I could. More importantly I picked whatever cinematography jobs came my way because it is very important to have hands-on real experience, theory can only take you so far. So I am for all practical purposes, a self taught cinematographer and director. Do you have any future projects lined up? Balaji Motion Pictures have expressed an interest in my work and we are looking at scripts that will mutually excite us. (As told to Akshay Singh)

SHUFFLEliving TRAVEL Pang Tso also called the Pangong Lake, is a large body of crystal clear salty water that shines in various shades of blue depending on the varied depths present. This feature, of the ever changing hues of the lake is the USP of the lake. The name Pangong is a derivative of a Tibetan word, Banggong Co which means long, narrow and enchanted lake. One third of the lake is in India while the

remaining two thirds lies in Tibet, controlled by China. The lake is also called ‘The lake of Great Hollow’. It is considered to be the largest lake in Asia, located across the chang la pass, 160 km to the north – east of Leh. The Lake is about 4 Km wide and 136 Km long approximately. The easiest way to reach the lake is a five hour drive from Leh, in the Ladakh region of

Jammu and Kashmir. According to people, it is believed that the waters of this serene and calm lake must have been fresh at some point of time in ancient history. During winters the lake freezes completely despite of being made up of saline waters. The only life that the lake supports is a few species of crustaceans and no vegetation and aquatic life other than that. Towards the east, the lake is supposed to have sweet water. The sight of the lake is beyond one’s imagination, with the various migratory birds that give it a visit like, the black neck crane, Brahamani Ducks and seagulls. Ladakhi Marmots can also be spotted in the region of the lake, which are rodent like creatures that can grow to the size of a small dog. Pangong Tso lies on the Sino-Indian Line of Actual Control and thus requires an Inner Line Permit. Owing to Pangong’s proximity to the border, tourists are only allowed to visit the lake upto the Spangmik village. For the hardcore adventure lovers, there are camping sites on the shore of the Pangong. The place is a photographers’ delight and camping is the only option if you wish to see the sunset and the sunrise. The place is under consideration for inclusion in Ramsar Convention for the conservation of wetlands. When it happens, Pangong Tso will be the first trans-boundary wetland in South Asia under the convention. The lake has become a star attraction after being featured in the Rajkumar Hirani’s blockbuster 3 idiots.

• The lake can get very cold and the weather very harsh after dusk, hence carry extra pair of warm clothes. Take a warm sleeping bag and don not forget to pack in some snaks and a torch. • The lake is situated in an ecologically fragile area and hence, littering can be a serious offence. Carry a waste bag for all you rubbish. • An Inner Line Permit is required to visit Pangong. The permit is easily obtainable from the DC’s office in Leh by either submitting the application yourself or through a travel agent. It is advisable to carry atleast 5-6 copies because the permit is checked and a copy is kept at numerous checkpoints on the route. • Carry First Aid.

Besides, yoga gives me the opportunity to keep fit and meditate at the same time. I find the idea of keeping my body fit, at the same time balancing the inner peace, very appealing. PLAYER OF THE MONTH

LUIS SUAREZ

36 - SHUFFLE MARCH 2013

SHUFFLElifestyle SPORTS Mr. clinical Luis Suarez has just played 13 matches for his side Liverpool in the ongoing E.P.L and in those games he excelled and rose to the occasions to score 16 goals. It would be appropriate to say that Suarez has been instrumental in almost every match played by the red’s in this season. He has been fulcrum of the team attack leading the team right from the front this charismatic front man has something in special in himself and I guess Manager Mr. Brendon Rogers has ably extracted that from him. Suarez strongly believes in attractive brand of passing football that Liverpool fans have become accustomed to in recent years and in his game he covers a lot of space and when he starts to run with the ball he keeps the pace and most importantly he is netting the ball at a rapid rate and ably assisting his teammates and so he has been asset to the team. Manager Rogers has only words of appraisal for Suarez. He on the field is a player who inspires his teammates, he has got a great spirit of courage of course he is a bit temperamental but he loves playing football on the field. Luis Suarez is one of the best strikers in the world and as well as having outstanding ability his work rate and commitment are there for all to see. Suarez in recent past has proved that reds are not one man team as they gradually turn around their form and start to move up the E.P.L table. The former Ajax man appeared to be surplus to the requirements when Rodgers challenged him to prove his worth just a few month ago but Suarez responded in the best possible fashion.

HTC ONE

SONY XPERIA Z

Frankly speaking, the HTC One seems the most solid contender for the crown. Not only has HTC managed to outclass all its previous smartphones by this phone, it has also managed to bring out a very superior quality phone which is an absolute delight to use. The very first thing that blows your mind when you see the HTC One is its amazingly beautiful design. The aluminium body feels very upper class, just like the Apple iPhone 5 and the finely crafted dual speakers in the front are cherry on the top. The 4.7-inch screen feels just perfect in your hand and with the slightly curved deisgn HTC has played a decent trick which makes the phone feel particularly slim in your hand. The HTC One is powered by a Quad-core processor and has an in-built storage of 32 or 64 GB. It features a 2 GB RAM and sports a 4 MP camera with Ultrapixel quality, which is very high performance.

After quite some time of lagging behind in top-notch and up-to-date features, Sony has finally brought out a beauty of a phone. From design to construction, this is a typical Sony beauty. The Xperia Z has a 5-inch full HD Gorilla Glass screen and glass at the back too, which makes it look seriously classy. The Xperia Z has tech specs that will have phone geeks drooling over it. It has 2 GB RAM and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Quadcore processor which clocks at 1.5 GHz. This makes the phone really fluid and responsive and there are little or no lags. Behind the phone is a 13-MP Sony camera with Exmor-RS technology. The camera is a true stunner and outclassed all the other phone cameras we pitched it against. It can record 1080p full HD videos. The Xperia Z is blessed with 16 GB internal storage but also has an expansion slot.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 Most of the people were disappointed by the launch of this highly-anticipated phone, because they thought it has “nothing new. The wait for this phone could almost match the anticipation of an Apple product. However, Samsung did manage to bring out a pretty decent smartphone that will give any other phone a run for its money. The successor to the highly successful Samsung Galaxy S4, and successful itself even before its launch, the Galaxy S4 sports a beautiful 5-inch HD screen that makes colours look really warm and vibrant. The processor has not been disclosed but speculation has it that it sports an octa-core one. Behind this beauty is a 13-MP camera, which we hope is a big improvement over the prevous one. The only turn-off was the plastic body but keeping in mind the fact that Samsung wants to keep it light-weight, it can be very well excused.
