Points of Pride #60*
From the Classroom Southport’s theatre classes owned the stage last Thursday in student-directed one act plays. Six student directors of 6 different shows spotlighted 70 student actors. Support came in the form of 7 crew members; together they entertained an audience of 305 people. In the words of Mrs. Whitlock, “As a teacher, I don’t believe there’s anything more important than facilitating my students as they remember, comprehend, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create. It’s the beauty and magic of what kids can really do. They did it all.”
Extra-Curricular After successful performances at SHS, the Cardinal Explicity Dance Team spread their wings to entertain at “The Jungle.” We commend Miss Haddix and her dancers for representing Southport well on January 12 in a halftime show at an IUPUI basketball game. Congrats to our White River Academic team who ended the season undefeated by winning at New Palestine on Thursday, 68-43. The perfect record beats last year’s performance. They now hold the title of Division Champs with outright qualification for Nationals.
Scholarship Comcast has recognized over 13,300 students in the U.S. by awarding Leaders and Achievers Scholarships. Congratulations to Brandon Ritter who is the first winner in Southport’s history. In addition to meeting academic standards, recipients must have demonstrated a commitment to community service, leadership, and be catalysts for positive change.
Southport High School
This is a shout-out to Future Cardinals at Clinton Young who are in Project Perfect Gentlemen. Established in 2009 by Mr. Sponsel, Mr. Hensler, and Mr. Gomez, the program provides 4th and 5th grade boys opportunities to build skills to become productive members of society and role models for other males. Team building activities encourage cooperation and shape character while students earn privileges by attending meetings, performing community service, and tutoring younger students. Project Perfect Gentlemen are pictured above at Lucas Oil Stadium which was one of the highlights of their year. We are proud you, gentlemen!
Athletics Congrats to Savanna Hickle for winning the diving competition at the Falcon Invitational. This is a huge accomplishment to take first place against so many fierce competitors. The Cardinal bowling teams have had great seasonal play. On Thursday, the boys ended with a 6-4 record clenching their 5th consecutive winning season. The girls suffered a tough loss to Roncalli, but did tally their highest score of the year, finishing the season 8-2. This is admirable improvement over the previous 4 years in which they claimed only 7 wins. Coach Thomas is proud of both teams and anticipates strong sectional play.
