IBTAYDA KASHMERE GATE AREA DOCUMENTATION UNDER ARCHITECTURE CONSERVATION DELHI IS A CITY OF MANY LAYERS, ONE THAT HAS SEEN BOTH GLORY AND DESTRUCTION IN ITS TIME. IT HAS BEEN DILAPIDATED TIME AND AGAIN

ONLY TO RISE FROM ITS ASHES TO BECOME THE CAPITAL OF ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL DYNASTIES. FORTUNATELY, THE RESILIENT AND ENDURING CULTURE AND HERITAGE HAS WITHSTOOD THE TEST OF TIME AND THE CITY CONTINUES TO LIVE. AS MIRZA GHALIB QUOTED,” IF WORLD IS THE BODY, DELHI IS THE SOUL.” THE HEART OF DELHI CAN BE FOUND IN 350 YEARS OLD, DELHI-06. AS THE WHEELS OF TIME TURNED, VARIOUS KINGS AND EMPERORS MADE DELHI THEIR ROYAL SEAT. LAL KOT, QILA RAI PITHORA, JAHANPANAH, FIROZABAD TUGHLAKABAD, SIRI, DINPANAH, DELHI-SHER-SHAHI/ SHAHJAHANABAD AND NEW DELHI.

AFTER MUGHAL EMPERORS SHIFTED THEIR BASE FROM DELHI TO AGRA, SHAH JAHAN, HUMAYUN’S GREAT-GRANDSON, RETURNED TO DELHI AND ESTABLISHED

SHAHJAHANABAD

— A CITY WITH THE COLOSSAL RED FORT AND ITS 14 GATES. A CITY THAT PREDOMINANTLY FORMS DELHI TODAY THAN THE CITY BUILT BEFORE IT. THE FORT STILL STANDS ALONG WITH THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE JAMA MASJID AND CHANDNI CHOWK. SOME OF THE GATES LIKE THE DELHI GATE, LAHORI GATE, TURKMAN GATE, AJMERI GATE AND KASHMIRI GATE STILL EXIST.

THE KASHMIRI GATE AREA OF SHAHJAHANABAD IS THE SMALL PART

THAT LIES TO THE NORTH OF OLD DELHI RAILWAY STATION, WHILE THE BULK OF SHAHJAHANABAD LIES TO ITS SOUTH. A RAILWAY STATION IN 19TH C. DELHI HAD BECOME A NECESSITY DUE TO THE GROWING RAIL NETWORK OF BRITISH INDIA AND THE INCREASING BRITISH INTEREST IN DELHI (THEY HAD ESSENTIALLY CONTROLLED DELHI SINCE 1803), HOWEVER THE LOCATION OF OLD DELHI STATION WAS PROBABLY DICTATED BY RETRIBUTIONARY PASSIONS AFTER THE UPRISING OF 1857, SINCE THE INTRODUCTION OF THE RAIL LINES AND STATION IN THEIR CURRENT ALIGNMENT MEANT THE CLEARING OF A LARGE SWATH OF THE CITY. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 20TH C. THE THEN KASHMIRI GATE AREA, WAS A VERY BRITISH PART OF SHAHJAHANABAD, AND THE BUILDINGS TEND TO REFLECT THAT AS WELL. ON MAY 11, 1857, LARGE NUMBERS OF REBEL SEPOYS LAID SIEGE TO THE MAGAZINE, BUT REALIZING DEFENCE WAS IMPOSSIBLE, THE BRITISH GUARDS BLEW UP THE MAGAZINE IN A TERRIFIC EXPLOSION WHICH COULD BE HEARD ALL OVER DELHI. THE TELEGRAPH MEMORIAL WAS BUILT IN HONOUR OF THE TELEGRAPH OFFICIALS WHO STAYED PUT AND KEPT WARNING OFFICIALS IN AMBALA TO DISARM THEIR SOLDIERS SO THAT THE REBELLION DOES NOT SPREAD FURTHER AND WERE SUCCESSFUL IN EFFECTIVELY GETTING THEIR MESSAGE ACROSS.

LOCATED IN THE GROUNDS OF AMBEDKAR UNIVERSITY IN KASHMERE GATE, DELHI, THE FAMOUS DARA SHIKOH LIBRARY NOW FUNCTIONS AS THE OFFICE OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL DEPARTMENT OF DELHI GOVERNMENT. BUILT BY DARA SHIKOH, MUGHAL EMPEROR SHAHJAHAN’S SON AND CHOSEN SUCCESSOR, THIS BUILDING BOASTS OF IMMENSE HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE. NOT ONLY OF ARCHITECTURAL RELEVANCE BUT A PAST WHICH MANY OF US STAND UNAWARE. THE SERIES OF ACTIVITIES WHICH TOOK PLACE IN THIS BUILDING IS DEEPLY CONNECTED TO THE ROOTS OF THE SALVATION OF OUR COUNTRY AFTER BRITISH INVASION. A SYMBOL OF PERSEVERANCE IS WHAT THIS HERITAGE BUILDING STANDS FOR. EVERY OCCUPANT OR AGENCY WHEN ONCE OWNED THE BUILDING, ADDED ON TO ITS ARCHITECTURE AND HISTORIC VALUE.

KASHMERE GATE MARKET

KASHMERE GATE MARKET IS OF GREAT SIGNIFICANCE AS IT EXPRESSES THE PLAY OF TIME AND ITS EFFECT ON KASHMERE GATE AREA. A PART OF KASHMERE GATE MARKET, LOCATED AROUND AND IN FRONT OF THE FAKHRUL-MASJID WAS A VAST SPACE SHARED BETWEEN THE CHURCH AND THE MASJID AND WAS MAJORLY USED AS SEATING SPACE. JUST SOUTH OF THE BENGALI CLUB, EXISTS THE KASHMERE GATE MARKET BUILDING, CONSTRUCTED IN THE 1890S BY SULTAN SINGH. WROUGHT IRON PILLARS AND ORNAMENTATION ARE EVIDENT ELEMENTS OF ARCHITECTURE STYLE IN KASHMERE GATE MARKET. ALL THE SHOPS LINED UNDER THESE PILLARS, WERE THE MAJOR MARKET AREA FOR BRITISH RESIDENCES WHICH LATER FLOURISHED INTO AUTOMOBILE MARKET.

NCC HOSTEL BUILDING

OWNED AND MANAGED BY NATIONAL CADET CORPORATION

IN THE EARLIER PERIOD OF TIME, THIS USED TO BE THE HOSTEL BUILDING FOR THE STUDENTS OF ST. STEPHENS COLLEGE. PRESENT SCENARIO SHOWS THIS BUILDING USED AS THE HOSTEL FOR NATIONAL CADET CORPORATION. IT IS LOCATED ADJACENT TO INDIRA GANDHI DELHI TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY FOR WOMEN. THE ARCHITECTURAL ESSENCE OF THE BUILDING HAS FADED THROUGH THE COURSE OF TIME, THE BUILDING HAS BEEN PLASTERED AND PAINTED OVER IT’S STONE MASONRY.

ST. JAMES CHURCH

OWNED AND MANAGED BY PRIVATELY OWNED BY CHURCHES OF NORTH INDIA (CNI)

ST. JAMES CHURCH, ALSO POPULARLY KNOWN AS ‘SKINNER’S CHURCH’, WAS BUILT IN THE YEAR 1836,AND IS THE OLDEST PROTESTANT CHURCH OF DELHI. SITUATED AT THE JUNCTION OF LOTHIAN ROAD AND CHURCH ROAD, IT HAS PLAYED AN IMPORTANT PART IN THE LIFE OF THE CITY. THE ST. JAMES CHURCH WAS THE FIRST CHURCH TO BE BUILT IN DELHI. THIS CHURCH IS BUILT IN A GREEK CROSS PLAN WITH A FINE COLONIAL CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURE AND A FLORENTINE DOME. THIS STRUCTURE NOT ONLY SPEAKS VOLUME ABOUT THE ASSOCIATIONAL VALUE BUT ALSO ABOUT THE INTRODUCTION OF NEW STYLE OF ARCHITECTURE IN DELHI. PRESENTLY, THE CHURCH FACES ISSUES IN REGARD TO ITS STRUCTURE.

THE LAL MASJID IS A WELL-KNOWN MOSQUE IN DELHI. IT IS ALSO KNOWN AS THE FAKR-UL MASJID. THE LAL MASJID IS AN IMPRESSIVE MOSQUE LOCATED IN THE AREA OF BARA BAZAAR CLOSE TO KASHMIRI GATE. IT WAS BUILT ON THE ORDERS OF KANIZ-I-FATIMA, SPOUSE OF SHUJAAT KHAN. SHE WAS ALSO GIVEN THE TITLE OF FAKR-I-JAHAN. THIS MASJID WAS BUILT IN REMEMBRANCE OF HER HUSBAND SHUJAAT KHAN, A COMMANDER IN THE ARMY OF AURANGZEB AND WAS KILLED IN ONE OF THE BATTLES. THE MOSQUE WAS BUILT DURING 1728 AND 1729 AND IS A SIMPLE YET BEAUTIFUL STRUCTURE.
