ANNOUNCEMENTS WEEK OF MAY 4TH

New Family Is On the Way...Can You Help? Do you like learning about different cultures, even different religions? If so, please consider helping us welcome a new refuge family arriving this month! The mission committee needs a few dedicated folks who can participate in SHPC’s sponsorship of a newly arriving refugee family. Our initial duties include helping set up their apartment, collecting furniture, buying groceries (you may be given an exotic grocery list of things you have never heard of!), meeting them at the airport and basically being their new friend. Our commitment to the family is for six months but you may volunteer for any amount of time. Gently used furniture such as a couch, dining room table and chairs, dressers, end tables, and lamps are needed. Clothing and age-appropriate toys will be appreciated once we learn more about the family. contact Cathy Beard. Thank you! 512-589-5634, beardfamily@austin.rr.com.

Our guests are coming! IHN (Interfaith Hospitality Network) guests are families with children who, because of a crisis situation in their lives, have lost their homes. The program provides for them to live at Austin area churches while they find housing and get back on their feet. During the week of May 11th-18th, four IHN families will live at our church and will be fed and sheltered by SHPC volunteers. Turn the page to find out how you can help!

IHN Needs Here’s where we need help with IHN: • Move-in: Sunday 12:30 p.m. • Dinner Preparers: 6 - 7:30 p.m. • Overnight Host: 8 - 7:15 a.m. • Evening Host: 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. • Weekend Breakfast Servers: Sat 8 - 9 a.m.; Sun 7 - 7:30 a.m. • Saturday Hosts and lunch: several shifts • Supply Donors: all week • Transportation Volunteers and Linen Washers. • Move-out: Sunday 6:30 am Young children make excellent hosts because the guests are often young children. Sign up in the narthex or contact Lara Manire at ihn. shpc@yahoo.com or 512-922-3615.

MEET US AT THE DECK As the new building at Brodie continues to take shape, we are looking for some volunteers to help us get the building ready for us to use. If you can help us clean up construction mess, organize supplies and set up the room for use, please contact Mary Aversa in the church office at 512.892.3580 or mary@shpc.org. You don’t need special skills or tools to help out!

SHPC Preschool Summer Camps Registration continues! ick up a brochure in the Narthex for more information, and contact Preschool Director Pattie Lawrence to register! (pattie@shpc.org)

Jesus in the Gospels Study Returns This class focuses on the portraits of Jesus found in the four Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, taking a different approach from the familiar “life and teaching of Jesus” study. We will look at the way each individual Gospel writer presents events and teachings and at the picture of Jesus that emerges in each of the Gospels. In this 30 week class, participants will read the four Gospels and considerable amounts of scripture from other parts of the Bible. The class will be 2 hours each week. Currently, it looks like the class will be on Monday mornings from 9:30-11:30 unless we receive requests for a different day and time. For more information, or to sign up, contact Sherry Smith at sherry@shpc.org.

SHPC Men’s Book Club The SHPC Men’s Book Club meets on Thursday, May 8th at 7 p.m. in Room 9 on the Wm Cannon Campus to discuss Sam Allberry’s Lifted: Experiencing the Resurrected Life. Join us as Stefan Haag leads the discussion. For more information, contact Stefan Haag by phone (512-288-3479) or email (shaag@austin.rr.com).

Mary Martha Circle Come join your Circle friends for our endof-year picnic, and discussion on May 8th! This is our last meeting of the year, so make sure to make plans to attend...you won’t want to miss it!

Caring Forever 2014 The Caring Forever Endowment Fund award keeps growing, thanks to your support. It is a real blessing to be able to provide meaningful monetary support for someone who is answering God’s call! Since Mother’s Day is May 11 and Father’s Day will be June 15, you may wish to give in honor/memory of one of those loved ones.

The recipient(s) of the 2014 award will be announced on Father’s Day, June 15. Donation forms are available in the Narthex. You may fill out a form and enclose it with your monetary gift in an envelope then place it in the offering plate or in the black mailbox on the wall in the church office. In addition to thanking you for your generosity, we’ll send a special note to the appropriate person to let them know of your gift. If it’s your mother or father, we’ll send a special Mother’s Day or Father’s Day card. Have questions? Call the church office, 512-892-3580. A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. -Proverbs 11:25

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS Tell us who should receive the Caring Forever award for 2014 Because of the generosity of the congregation, our Caring Forever Endowment Fund is able to grant an award of $1500 this year to an organization or individual who is working to share the Love of Christ through caring for others. Past awards have been made for work with the homeless, mission work in Cuba, disaster relief work, education and Campus Ministry work. Each of these have been suggested by the congregation through a nomination form like the one below and selected by the Caring Forever Endowment Fund committee. This is where you come in. You can nominate a worthy work by filling in this nomination form and placing it in the Caring Forever Box in the Narthex, or by returning it to the church office. Be sure to get your nomination in by May 25, 2014. Just like every year, the award is coming only from the earnings of the Endowment Fund. After all, that’s the way it works. The principal of the Fund–your contributions–are never spent. They stay in the Fund to keep it serving great works year after year. Have questions? Just ask Endowment Committee chair Dan Brinks. Helpcontinue to perpetuate the legacy God has given us through his Son, Jesus Christ! All nominations will be reviewed by the taskforce and the Caring Forever 2014 Award will be presented in church on Father’s Day June 15. Please conside____________________________________________________as recipient of the 2014 (name of person or organization)
