d Ruscha has spent much of his life painting words (though that’s not all he paints, draws and photographs). He’s made paintings of famous logos like the Hollywood sign, and of everyday phrases like ‘Not a bad world is it?’ and of strange puns like ‘Chili Draft’. When I spoke to him, he had just found a nice new combination of words. ‘Bliss Bucket,’ he says to me happily, ‘I like that. It has a kind of fist-clenching strength to it. And I suppose that’s pretty much it. It doesn’t have to be analysed necessarily; it just stands for its own power. I forget where I heard it, if I ever did. Maybe it came to me in a dream.’ Alongside Warhol, Lichtenstein, Rosenquist, and a few others, Ed Ruscha is a leading member of the generation of American Pop artists who came to prominence in the early Sixties. Each worked on different materials in a different way. Warhol did screenprints of celebs and newspaper photos, Lichtenstein focused on comic strips, and Rosenquist worked in the style of billboards.
