is there beauty in destruction? is there an attraction to crowds? is there empowerment behind the rebel? a brief letter from the editor

Why start catnip, a new magazine? Amongst all magazines which claim to have that certain recognizable and unique difference and hold on the industry there is yet a place where the reader has a substantial respected input on the publication, which is current, catnip is born. Each issue holds a different theme, a different subject to be addressed. However, though there are artist works, and articles to be found, this is a space, a dimension, in which your own thoughts are brought to other people and where you can share the view points and opinions of others in return. The reader shall never see the issue subject, as a typed word, so their own

opinion isn’t tainted with something they perceive as something else, and this is what the catnip programme is all about. Thinking outside the box and feeding ones curiosity and writing better. Better writers make better a better creative, let yourself grow. Catnip’s first Issue, _, holds a mixture of different elements, which will bring use to more than a single sense. The magazine pushes the boundaries on what a contemporary publication will abide by so the reader and participant will gain more in their knowledge and how they problem solve or approach what they see and hear, right through to the daily routines everybody has. Please find yourself 21

captivated by what the magazine open your mind and think about aspects of what you see hear and feel throughout. Curiosity killed the cat yet the ideology of curiosity never fails to get us hooked. And so, the Catnip addiction begins.

m*a* s*h During the manic times of war there are many opportunities of instances which express deep emotion and anarchy for those who choose to take advantage of such an occasions. With in the Iraq war there are many cases of such mannerisms in humans that can sometimes be difficult to relate with. During a mission on January 16, 2005 encouraging locals to vote US patrol gets pinned down in a 2 hour fire fight with insurgents joint foot with the

local ING (Iraqi National Guard) and Iraqi Police. Their strategy was gorilla, ambush. This is one instance in which is hard to imagine the frantic feeling of a soldier, as the _ rained upon them. Each of the images represents an instance in which it is hard to grasp the psychology or thought behind the events until it has happened to you. But it’s important that sympathy is given to the idea of these 24

thoughts and that is where you start to understand the thoughts of others. M*A*S*H series have a certain essence of division. A emotional boundary of fright/ sadness and anger/attacking. A striking insight into the ‘oppositions’ a story from both sides. A window to the similarities between their reactions and expressions along with the differences within the cultures. Does wearing a uniform make the act of combatting in war acceptable? Debate.

Rw anda Rwanda, a democratic republic of Congo holds camps for the many displaced people ,operate under pressured conditions. These camps have existed since 1994 along with the genocide in Rwanda. Rwanda’s economy, which is based on subsistence agriculture, was devastated by the massacre. It has had little chance of recovery with a growing refugee population and ongoing fighting in several parts of the country. Women and Children have

been specifically targeted by guerrillas and their numbers swell the hospitals in both Rwanda and Burundi. Families live in make shift container housing to be near wounded but a growing number have lost relatives to preventable diseases such as malaria and cholera. Places such as the refuge in Rwanda are doing the best they can for the people who have suffered trauma and who need treating after the wrath of 33

those with disruption in their ambitions. The waiting rooms fill and begin to get so _, that as pictured here, a man is collapsed due to a combination of his illness and lack of help.

N* y*c* ‘Raised by Wolves’ documents the lives of teenage runaways who live on the streets of San Francisco and Los Angeles. Jim Goldberg spent between 1987 and 1993 on the California streets photographing and interviewing his adolescent subjects, their social workers and the police. They all lend a distinct dimension to the harrowing picture of American street life and the adversarial institutional culture surrounding it. A

combination of photographs and video stills, found documents, and handwritten texts by the subjects themselves create a scrapbook of the stark and unsparing lives. At its heart, this book is a compassionate and moving study of adolescent life in America, of displaced and misunderstood youths. It reveals the myriad traps which are set by drugs, violence, and exploitation, and the ultimate longing for happiness. Substances can broaden the 40

mind but there are healthier ways to feed the mind and make yourself more absorbent of the things around you. The series shows you but a few of the affects and consequences of anarchic behaviour and what can become losing yourself. But ultimately shows the will to go to another level in consciousness see things with a complete different eye. What good can come of such weapons as guns? _
