Families & Literacy, Inc. congratulates our 2013-2014 class upon receiving their GED® during a graduation ceremony held on May 20, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church in the Schreiner Chapel. In addition to those receiving their GED®, there were many students for the Pre-GED® and English classes as a Second Language who were honored for their completion of the school year. Families & Literacy, Inc. board president Steve Schwarz opened the ceremony congratulating all the students. Kevin Mayne, keynote speaker, spoke to the students about the possibilities of what a GED® certificate could bring to their future and those of their families.
Instructor Spotlight Mari Glamser-Samuel
My husband Dave and I moved to Kerrville in 2012 after I retired from teaching high school history at a Title 1 school in Houston. In trying to find ways to get involved in our new city, I noticed an ad in which Families & Literacy was looking for someone to teach their U.S. Citizenship class. As I had taught history and government for 24 years, I applied for the position. However, there not enough students to make the class but they had an opening for an English as a Second Language (ESL) 1 teacher. In addition to teaching ESL, I am a member of the Head Start Policy Council and I fundraise for charitable organizations through bicycle riding. I am also a member of Hill Country Multi-Sport and compete in the Kerrville Festival. My absolute favorite thing to do in Kerrville is our summer swims in the Guadalupe River from the Nimitz Lake to Starbucks and back.

Wells Fargo recently presented Families & Literacy, Inc. with a $1,500 donation in support of its mission to “Educate Hill Country adults to be active contributors in the life of the community.” Pictured from left to right are Kacy Smith, Vice President, Wells Fargo Bank, Mike Hunter, Executive Director, Families & Literacy, Inc. and Mike Huff, Wells Fargo Business Banking Manager. Huff said, “We are proud to partner with Families & Literacy, Inc. as we work toward achieving our shared goals in the community.” Other classes we offer: For Kids’ Sake Designed for divorcing or separating parents, this half-day class provides strategies to help both parents and children through difficult times and transitions. This is a court-mandated class for divorcing parents with children under the age of 18. Citizenship Preparations Adults prepare for U.S. Citizenship. Course includes test practice, actual INS application forms and a study guide. Parenting with Love & Logic A multi-week course to help parents raise responsible children with good decision-making skills: children who are selfconfident, capable, motivated and ready for the real world. Participants who utilize class-taught principles see that parenting and teaching can be fun and rewarding, instead of stressful and chaotic. Personal Finance Adults learn financial literacy and asset-building by understanding budgeting, debt control, savings and investing. By setting goals, establishing priorities and following a plan, adults can learn to accumulate wealth and achieve financial independence.
