Our Special Edition print sales are enhanced this year by partnering with Comme Ca Art. They are featuring a range of limited edition SUN images in their extensive gallery offering as well as promoting them through online internet sales. For the second year we are featuring articles and Podcasts in the book and on our web site that bring insights and perspectives on current photography, art, design and advertising in the UK. Helping to raise the awareness internationally of the successful SUN Awards photographers. And last but not least, SUN continues to bring the work of its photographers to new venues and an increasingly broad audience around the world. Let us know how much you enjoy SUN 2007

Best Image

Best Image "The shoot was commissioned by New Holland Publishers for a book called No Place Like Home, author Richard Jarman. When setting up the shot I was trying to get the look of a typical English garden scene to contrast with the slightly bizarre background. I included the red flowers to emphasise the contrasts in the picture. It's a straight shot, taken on colour transparency film with a Mamiya RB. There's a sense of whimsy to it that I really like." What would be your best advice for someone just starting a career in photography? Don't give in to the pressure to sell your work and your intellectual property rights for nothing. And NEVER EVER give away your copyright. There have been 100ユs of people working for many years to protect the industry as a whole against the bullies who will gladly take everything from individuals for nothing. Don't throw away all that hard work by buckling and looking after number one. The bullies can only be beaten if we stick together. Favourite camera? I try not to have a favourite, the others get upset. Do you enjoy working with others or are you a loner? Definitely with others. I love nothing more than a studio full of people.

Tim Ainsworth What do you know now you wish you had known when you started? I wish I'd known Getty was going to try and destroy photographers intellectual property rights. I'd have had him knobbled. Best job ever? Certainly the most challenging involved two 100 ton cranes, an articulated lorry, a 100ft high ヤstudioユ, a 120ft x 60ft high background and crew of 40. Which other photographers do you admire and why? Anton Corbijn, what a fantastic eye he has. Most useful bit of equipment? Rope. You can do anything with rope.

What disc do you have in your studio CD player? CD player? Airtunes if you don't mind! I have quite an eclectic taste - anything from British Sea Power, Queens of the Stone Age, The Cribs, I Like Trains to the old favourites, The Roses, Happy Mondays and probably the best band in the world, ever, The Smiths. Do you have a life outside of photography? Yes. Have just started sailing again after 25 years. I love it.

Your favourite location? The National Trust site right at the end of the Lleyn Peninsula over looking Bardsey Island. Stunning views.

Studio - Rent or Buy? Why? Just bought a studio after 16 years renting. Why? I don't want to spend the next twenty years lining someone else's pockets.

How do you promote your business? Word of mouth and keeping in contact with my favourite clients works best.

Which one thing would most improve your life? A yacht would be very nice thank you.

Do you belong to AOP/BIPP etc and why? AOP. Primarily their stance on Intellectual Property rights. The mail forum is indispensable too. What is good about the SUN Awards? The diversity and high standard of all the different photographers never ceases to amaze me. Favourite artist? It's a close call between Banksy and David Shrigley. Favourite book? The Wrong Boy by Willy Russell. Bags of Morrissey references, very funny. But also very sad. Where did you go to college and was it a good idea? Hartford College in Northwich. Yeah, it was a good idea. The work placement alone gave me the foot in the door I needed to progress my career.

What is good about the SUN Awards? The SUN awards has been great for me. It has led me to working on some really nice projects. Wine or beer? Real ale. Where did you go to college and was it a good idea? I studied in Birmingham for two years. The course wasn't that good though. Studio - Rent or Buy? Why? Renting is right for me at the moment. I have a studio in Leeds which is a really good rate.

Chris Leah Where do you get your inspiration? I use all kinds of methods for inspiration from the internet to talking to locals in the pub. Film or Digital? I love using film but digital is a great commercial tool. I have recently bought a Phase One P30. What do you know now you wish you had known when you started? How important it is to work on your own style. Best job ever? Photographing Michael Owen with point and shoot cameras. Which other photographers do you admire and why? I like photographers work with a strong style. How do you promote your business? My website is very important but I'm working on a mailer at the moment. What disc do you have in your studio CD player? 6 Music mostly.

Which one thing would most improve your life? A holiday. What would be your best advice for someone just starting a career in photography? Try and make as many contacts as possible. Best bit of luck you have ever had? Winning £250 in the pub quiz. Is your own work important to you? Why? Yes very much so I'm always working on new projects. I like the challenge of coming up with new stuff. Favourite Client? Why? My girlfriend Vicki because she's inspirational and we have done some great projects together. Do you enjoy working with others or are you a loner? I like working with a team sometimes, it's more fun. Do you belong to AOP/BIPP etc and why? I'm a member of the AOP because it has lots to offer and I am listed on the online gallery which sends quite a lot of traffic to my site.

What is the most important thing life has taught you? You don't get anything for nothing. What is your most treasured possession? My Cocker Spaniel. Are you a spender or a saver? I’m a spender at the moment but I need to start saving. Do you think an agent is necessary? If you want to work on big projects all the time. Where did you spend your best holiday? Cantabria in the north of Spain. Do you sell your own work? No, but I’d like to.

Do you have a life outside of photography? You must be joking, I have a wife, 3 kids, 2 pigs, 2 sheep and a pony - so I'm kept very busy outside work! What was your worst job ever? Photographing a dog meat factory - very grim! Studio - Rent or Buy? Why? Buy as a future investment - I hope! Which one thing would most improve your life? A lottery win. Is your own work important to you? Why? I'm very very proud of the work I 'create' and try to keep a very high standard to satisfy my own standards if that makes sense. Favourite Client? Why? My brother - prompt payment!

Guy Farrow

Do you belong to AOP/BIPP etc and why? AOP, advice, information and awards.

Best job ever? Shooting Deco for Umbro in Barcelona - a great experience with a great football star.

What is good about the SUN Awards? It's a good promotional piece to showcase your work.

Most useful bit of equipment? Kit trolley - saves a lot of lifting boxes and P45 back!! Your favourite location? Cape Town because it has a great atmosphere and there are lots of different types of location to choose from all in quite a small area. How do you promote your business? Web, and mail-out folios. What disc do you have in your studio CD player? Arctic Monkeys - wakes everyone up in the morning.

Do you think an agent is necessary? It's a luxury - someone to trapes your book around for you and deal with the horrible money side of the business. Where did you spend your best holiday? Canada - skiing. Favourite software. Why? The software I use the most is Capture One, it's quick and easy to use and really makes adjusting and processing RAW's easy. Favourite artist? Richard Avedon. Favourite book? The Feather Men - Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE. Where did you go to college and was it a good idea? Newcastle - very - it brought me out of my 'shell' What is the most important thing life has taught you? Love. What keeps you awake at night? My son Rupert!
