SULL PRIMETIME ET – Sire of Lots 8A and 8B The dam of Lots 8A and 8B is one of the best Rodeo Drive cows we’ve ever had the pleasure to work with in our breeding program. Since 1863, that’s a LOT of cows! Add her Pretty Woman genetics to that scenario and you can see why we planned her mating to two-time National Champion Bull Primetime. Line ‘em up – Solution, Mona Lisa, Rodeo Drive, Pretty Woman. They say this sale offers “the greatest cow families in the Shorthorn breed” because it’s true!

REVIVAL BUYER/SELLER AGREEMENTS • For all lots in which future fulfillment is a factor (ie. flushes, retained rights to flushes, retained percentage ownership), the Revival provides a written agreement between seller and buyer. Prepared by an attorney, these agreements document the original sale terms in case of a dispute. Both parties will sign, and will be provided a copy. The original, signed agreement is filed by the Revival. REVIVAL FLUSH TERMS • Feature Flush lots guarantee a minimum of six transferable embryos. Flush purchases require one-half payment sale day. The balance is due upon completion of the flush. Flush terms are detailed in a written agreement between seller and buyer. Seller will not begin flush procedure until agreement is signed. Buyer has no obligation to make any part of the balance payment until complete flush agreement is achieved. Seller has no obligation to release embryos or pregnancies achieved until complete balance payment is made. Buyer pays all flush expenses, unless otherwise specified in detail by seller. REVIVAL EMBRYO PACKAGES • Proper settlement must be made in order for embryos to be released. The update sheet will list the embryo packages that are available to take with you from the sale, along with the storage location of all other packages. Shipping arrangements and costs are the responsibility of the buyer. PREGNANCY INSURANCE • The Revival suggests that buyers of pregnancy lots invest in pregnancy insurance. The policy covers a live birth and the first 49 days of life at the cost of 15% of the purchase price. Buyers should notify Hugh F. Miller Insurance, Harding & Harding agent, on sale day or by phone at 815-626-1300 by October 1, 2012. DNA GENOTYPING & GENETIC TESTING • Sale lots are THF and PHAF, unless otherwise stated. A DNA genotype is utilized in establishing parentage and in determining the presence of a genetic defect. Animals do not have to be DNA genotyped or free of defects to be registered. A listing of genetic defect “free” (F) and “carrier” (C) animals maintained by the ASA is periodically updated on the website www.shorthorn.org. If an animal becomes an A.I. sire or a donor dam, all required genetic testing must be completed and a DNA record must be on file with ASA prior to registering any progeny. CALFHOOD VACCINATION OF HEIFERS • All Revival open heifers have been calfhood vaccinated by their consignors. CANADIAN PURCHASES • We welcome our Canadian friends to make purchases in the sale, and we will cooperate in arranging international testing and shipment. However, all costs of testing and shipment are the responsibility of the buyer.

12

REVIVAL CONSIGNMENT INVITATION • Making a purchase in the Revival creates the eligibility to consign to future sales. Please contact Steve French by April 1, 2013 to discuss your interest in consigning potential sale lots next year.

Dazzler females are some of our best producers. The donor of Lot 9 is out of the original Mona Lisa 35L – not a clone. In time, I believe this fact will make her even more valuable. Her first two Aviator calves were awesome – Hannah’s Mona Lisa was a division champion at Louisville and the Junior National. Mona Lisa Dazzler’s mating to Red Stallion has ALL the possibilities. The sire of Lot 17, Apollo, has done a nice job for us. He sires satisfactory frame sizes and lots of do-ability. This bred heifer will calve in January and she will do a job - plenty of fertility. The Aviator son she is mated to was Toronto Royal Grand Champion in 2010. We are partners with Dale Muck and have a nice set of calves from Matchmaker. The Miss Lea x Matchmaker mating will produce a good one for sure.

The dam of Lot 18 was purchased as a feature of the 2009 Toronto Royal Sale to add elite Canadian genetics in the rebuilding process at Armstrong Farms. Miss Lea 46U has flawless phenotype, extra dimension and width and fluid movement. Her tremendous heifer calf by Aviator has the extra rib shape and dimension to compete at a very high level. Augusta Pride 925 is one of the most consistently competitive females we have ever shown. She showed at eight Major P.A.C.E. shows and won her class all eight times. She was named division champion and reserve division champion six times. At the Keystone International she was selected Supreme Champion over all breeds! This powerful show heifer has developed into a beautiful cow! The genetics of Trump x Desert Rose 004 x Rodeo Drive x Augusta Pride is a profound stockpile of potential no matter what sire you choose for your flush. We’re including the use of any of our bulls to sweeten the deal – but there are a lot ways to go with this remarkable female. Determining how to mate her will be a fun project!

Among the Shorthorn breed’s most influential families, the Augusta Pride dynasty has quite possibly made the most significant impact on the leading herds of the U.S.

SS AUGUSTA PRIDE 3127 – 2002 ASA Dam of the Year Matriarch of the Augusta Pride family

Developed by Schrag Shorthorns, this family was five generations in the making of the modern day matriarch SS Augusta Pride 3127. A Junior National Champion herself, 3127 has produced a multitude of champions and prolific donors. Study this assembly of her descendants and you’ll agree that this maternal line has as impressive a track record as any cow family, in ANY time period! The ability of SS Augusta Pride 3127 and her descendants to cross successfully with diverse sire lines is phenomenal. It is proof of the true strength and power of this premier female line of the Shorthorn breed.

(So we can have some calves of our own!) She was one of the crowd favorites and top-sellers of the Duis Dispersal. Her embryos have gone to top programs such as WHR, GNCC, SharBen and WayMar.

We were inspired to create The Great Shorthorn Revival on a sale weekend trip in the Fall of 2001 with Clint Tomson, then 92 years old. Clint was a Shorthorn man from birth. His interest in the Tomson family’s top-ranked breeding program lead to proficiency in livestock judging, expert salesmanship and, later, leadership of the breed as ASA Executive Secretary. He left the association to join his boyhood friend Frank Harding and his father F.W. Harding in forming American Live Stock Insurance Co., but Clint never left behind his love for the breed he helped make great. For hours on that trip we quizzed Clint about “the golden days of Shorthorns.” And he answered in depth

30

and in detail, as only Clint could. At one point Steve asked, “Clint, how are we going to get Shorthorn breeders to focus again on the cow families that made the breed great?” Without hesitation and for about an hour, Clint advised a marketing strategy that in ten years has proven to work. He started off saying, “Steve, you’re going to have to create an ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY. You can’t just tell people that cow families are important, and that following great bloodlines can be profitable. You have to show them! And show them right in their pocketbook, where it counts the most!” In that moment, the Great Shorthorn Revival was born!

We are often asked how we came up with title of this sale. An excerpt from “The Great Shorthorn Revival,” by Missouri breeder Dave Lorenz follows on the next page. His article was featured in the 50th Anniversary issue of Shorthorn World published in 1965.

CSF CIARA SAL – Daughter of Lot 29 Sold in the 2010 Revival for $5,200 Ciara P919 is a long-bodied, big-footed brood cow with a beautiful front end on a mid-size frame. She has consistently produced and raised phenotypically ideal offspring like Ciara Sal, pictured above. Her January 2013 calf by Eldorado could be her best yet! Serious breeding program builders should put this female at the top of the list. Excerpt from “The Great Shorthorn Revival” by Dave Lorenz, published in 1965. Now, “What’s this Shorthorn Revival Business?” A big portion of an entire generation of commercial cow men has grown old without ever seeing much but white-faced cattle. Our friend in west Texas said he hadn’t seen a herd of registered Shorthorn cattle since he last visited Sni-A-Bar at Kansas City in 1940! 25 years ago! When the cow business is good, ranchers buy more bulls than when business isn’t good. They are looking for bulls that will solve their problems. They also have to get their cows pregnant. But, if they can’t find bulls that will solve their problems, they will have no choice but to take the best bulls available. Unfortunately for the Shorthorn breed, I don’t think we have enough bulls available to get one extra thousand Shorthorn bulls into this great, open market for replacement bulls. The Charolais people are trying. The black Angus people are trying. The red Angus people are trying. The Santa Gertrudis, Brangus, Beefmaster people are trying. We, at Kansas City, are trying too! We’ve been building the strength of our herd from within. We’ve been adding the strong bulls and outstanding females we believe will help us. Sound feet and legs are an absolute must. We believe we must breed the kind of strength

The Great Shorthorn Revival is here. But, everybody has to do his part if we are going to get the business away from these other breeds. They’re just not going to drop dead because our breed awakens to this great need. The need for strong Shorthorn bulls is 100 times greater than your and our capacity to produce at this time. But, opportunity is where the NEED is…and because the need is great, the opportunity is great! Don’t let the Great Shorthorn Revival pass you by! Start today! If you need a new bull, travel farther, look harder, pay more…but insist on the bull you need. Don’t settle for a substitute for a good bull. Pick up the big, strong females you occasionally have the opportunity to buy. The kind that will produce a calf every year, and give enough milk to make a job of the calf. Start today to build up the strength of your herd. Competition demands that all of us Shorthorn people produce bulls that will sire bull calves strong enough to be preferred by commercial cattlemen all over America! Only because Lillian 813T has given us three daughters to build upon do we offer you this opportunity. Each time I attempted to write this footnote, I thought “this sounds just too good to be true.” But, honestly, Lillian has more than lived up to our expectations! Only when you see her can you truly appreciate her mass, dimension and front pasture eye appeal. Only when you own her will you truly appreciate her low maintenance requirements, high quality output and reproductive efficiency, and you will understand why we are retaining the right to flush her – to further ensure the Lillian influence lives on at Narrow Brook. Service sire Flyboy 747 is an Aviator son and “Revival Success Story” who earned the Calf Champion title at Louisville in his show ring debut.

CABRERA 24 SASKVALLEY PRIMO 40P – Sire of Lot 33

Named after Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera, Cabrera 24 is the most unique herd sire prospect to sell this fall. You’ve read about the “retro pedigree” of his dam Weston Mary in past Revival catalogs. She produced the Aviator donor for Matt Davis and Randy Sullivan’s $12,000 donor by Two Plus Two. We mated her to the Canadian sire Primo because he’s known to be a sound, moderate, consistent breeding bull who adds power in a “real world” package. Cabrera had a low birth weight, and is very deep and growthy. He’s a total outcross with a lot of performance.

We’re all looking for the outcross sires that will advance the dominant female lines of this breed. Fielder 28 can get the job done. Without a doubt, this pregnancy presents true value. You’ll see the dam and full sister to Lot 44 at the sale – and what you’re going to “get” will be evident! The full sister, Lucky Charm 1119X, was a Reserve Division Champion at NAILE, Division Champion of the 2012 Junior National bred & owned show and a class winner in the owned show. At the Ohio Beef Expo, right after I bought Lady Luck 10W from Lee Miller’s Paint Valley Farms, Don Cagwin told me she was the “buy of the century.” Don is right again. Lady Luck 10W is as good as they get! Her offspring is yet another shining example that incredible females “nick” with Aviator.

It’s no secret that great females always have great dams. SS Revival is, without discussion, among the most prolific and respected females in the breed. The Australian sire Dunbeacon Venture earned his nickname “King Cowmaker” when he sired the dam of Lot 47. The combination of structural soundness and style will put Revival 904X on the radar screen of the show ring aficionados, and the genetic diversity stacked up in her pedigree will make the cowmen stop and ponder the many, many ways to flush her! Aviator semen is “off the market.” You can still access his influence through ET matings such as Lot 47A – and what a mating it is!

Understanding bloodlines and how to combine them is the all important secret. Each layer of a pedigree builds upon the last... When I bought Lot 48 from Robert Alden as a heifer, he told me I’d gotten a great breeding piece and that she would make money! Thanks, Robert, for breeding good Shorthorns that will stand the test of time. The AF prefix has always stood for quality. Dream Girl 7 is an outcross – all the way! I don’t know how many “Dividend” daughters will sell this fall. Not many, and I really doubt there’d be another who is bred to Outback. Man, what a calf this will be! Lot 48 is a maternal sister to the Denver champion Step Ahead 525. She has never been flushed, and we will offer the new owner an opportunity to share in a flush with us next spring. We will provide semen from either Aviator or Red Stallion. Let’s talk after the sale!

...and interconnects with others to create the “substance” of dominant bloodlines. From the its Lilac origin in Ireland to the Shannon Margies, the Dream Girls and Dream Ladies, the Sweet Dreams and Sweet Margies, this genetic network is what a cow “family” is all about!

•Offered by Little Cedar Cattle Co., Beaverton, MI •Lot 55A - 5 straws of Studer’s Big John 30T •Lot 55B - 5 straws of Studer’s Big John 30T Outcross sire! Big John is the thickest-butted bull I’ve seen in a long time. He’s been proven for calving ease in the Studer herd, so use his semen on heifers with confidence. And did I mention that he’s a total outcross? I’m planning to use him to flush Weston Mary. Wow!
