UNIQUE AND AFFORDABLE ART I’m always looking for something a little different and unique to hang up on the wall at home. So when I stumbled across www.manchild.com.au I got a little excited. Manchild is a small company run by young designers and photographers based in Sydney’s Northern Beaches. They specialise in creating unique prints and designs on the highest quality Australia ply. As
each piece of ply has a different texture and grain no pieces are the same. All the light colours in the photos are printed transparent, leaving the grain and natural pattern of the plywood bare. You can even upload your own photos on their site and have them transformed as masterpieces. Prices start from $49.95 - $499.95 depending on size. Each order takes 3-4 weeks to arrive on your doorstep.

hen you think iconic Australian labels Mambo is at the top of the list. So when I had the opportunity to interview co-owner and managing Director Angus Kingsmill I cannot begin to tell you how excited I was. As soon as you walk through the front doors of Mambo HQ you can’t help but smile; it really is a happy place. Mambo was known for its tongue in cheek art; like the farting dog and the inebriated kangaroo and had quite the following. So what when wrong? Was it when co-founder Dare Jennings sold the business to Gazal Corporation who then got rid of its trademark designs including the farting dog or was it that there are now over 400 surf and street wear labels opposed to around 20 when Mambo first launched. In 2008 Angus and his business partner Brett Merriman (of The Nervous Investor Group) bought the much loved, yet floundering clothing label just before the GFC. Since the acquisition Mambo has grown over 1000% and in sales terms is turning over more units and dollars around the globe than at any stage of its 28 year life. At the time we acquired Mambo it had a very limited Department store distribution and certainly wasn’t profitable. We essentially purchased a great Australian brand with a blueprint of surf, music, humour and art’’ says Kingsmill, ‘’We’ve restructured it and taken the brand - and the art – around the planet.’’
Since the takeover they have changed the business model, introduced new lines and expanded overseas. You will be happy to know the ‘windy’ dog is back. They are taking Mambo back to its roots; the art that is what Mambo has been loved and known for. We will start seeing more from Reg Mombassa and we can’t forget the addition
al 30 established and upcoming artists who play a big part in Mambo.
margins aren’t as great but it has completely derisked the business, says Kingsmill.
Mambo is focusing on their strengths which are producing art and marketing rather than manufacturing. They have appointed licensing partners to manufacture all their products; “the
Mambo is no longer sole solely in David Jones; instead it has moved to a three tier distribution model in Australia; a discount model which sells 20 categories through Big W, a premium range
through Myer under the Goddess and Mambo Surf de Luxe brands, and surf channels where the premium range is sold through selected surf stores and of course one of Australia’s largest web-based retailers surfstitch.com. The exciting news is that Mambo are launching their very own online store in August as a way to get some of Mambo’s more edgy designs out into the market; the ones we all love and they will be exclusive to online. Although Kingsmill stresses the online store is not specifically meant to be a money making venture he believes that you need to have a presence in both bricks and mortar and online; that’s like music to my ears, I have been saying this for years. Added to the to-do list for Mambo are pop-up stores. It makes total sense to me; retailers really only make a good income for 3 months of the year and the other 9 months they struggle so I’m with Kingsmill, why not take advantage of the summer months. Fingers crossed one will pop-up near you soon. With this new direction and ‘Mambassadors’ like True Blood star Ryan Kwanten, Victoria’s Secret model, Barbara Palvin, Ashley Hart, Jessica Gomes, Cheyenne Tozzi and NRL great Benji Marshall Mambo is a force to be reckoned with.

TRIED AND TESTED I don’t know about you but my drycleaning bill was getting out of control; I was spending anywhere up to $300 a month. I decided to invest in The Sunbeam Pro Glide® Plus 8700. I handed over almost $400 and crossed my fingers it would do the job otherwise Mikey would blow a gasket. If it does the job I have saved us a fortune and I retain my title as shopping queen.
Now Australia’s Number One Ironing Brand Gives Back To Consumers Consumers who purchase a Pro Glide® Plus 8700 Steam Generator before 31st August will receive $100 Cash Back.
Well let me tell you, it not only does the job Mikey insists on ironing his own clothes and offers to do mine. Hallelujah. It’s great for steaming my suits, jeans are ironed and pressed in a matter of minutes and my silk shirts and dresses (which I now wash in the machine on delicate wash) only take a few minutes. The Sunbeam Pro Glide® Plus 8700 (RRP $399) has been designed and engineered in Australia for The Australian Consumer. It is compact in size for storage and with the lock and carry function it’s easy to transport around the home. The appliance delivers exceptionally high performance with 5 bars of steam pressure and 110g/min steam output, has innovative features such as an ergonomic steam trigger lock which can generate constant steam without the need to hold a button. It can also be continuously refilled and has an extra-long 3m power and 2m steam hose for maximum mobility.

FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EBAY APP marks a new era of mobile shopping
This month marks five years since eBay cemented its position in mobile and the Apple iTunes store first opened its digital doors with the eBay app becoming available to Australian shoppers. Aussies have been the fastest to evolve in five short years, spending more as a percentage on their mobile than any other eBay market – heralding a new era of mobile shopping. You all know I just love my stats; here are some that will blow your mind: * This year eBay predict that $20 billion worth of transactions will take place through the eBay App globally * 50% of eBay’s global revenue comes from multiscreen users * Australians spend more as a percentage of sales on their mobile than other market More shoppers are making on the spot purchases when the inspiration strikes and let me tell you it can happen in the most unusual places. I’m guilty of all but 1; can you guess which one? * One in three (32 per cent) Aussies report that they were inspired to shop while watching a movie * 26% of men were inspired to shop while on the toilet versus 18 per cent of women * During a meeting (17 per cent) * At a birthday party (14 per cent) * In the shower (13 per cent) If you feel like shopping when the inspiration strikes here are my top 5 tips for mobile shopping 1. Turn on your notifications Make sure you never miss out on a must-have item by being outbid – ensure the App’s notifications are set to ‘on’ – in most cases these settings can be personalized through the App’s notification settings.
2. Lock and password protect your phone It’s the most important thing you can do to ensure security on your mobile device. Use a PIN/password on your device and set it to time-out so it locks automatically. If your phone is lost or stolen, thieves won’t be able to access personal information and accounts. Also ensure your credit card and account login information isn’t stored in emails or notes on the phone. 3. Get rid of unwanted items Using the eBay App, you can sell any old or unwanted items to help fund new purchases. Use your Smartphone’s camera to take a picture and upload it straight to your listing. You can even predefine and save your listing preferences like handling time and return policy, as well as use the Sell one like this feature to auto-fill some of your item details. 4. Make sure you have latest version of the App To avoid common technical problems and ensure you have up-to-date security protection, make sure you have the latest version of the App – you can check iTunes or Google Play for the latest release. 5. Open a PayPal account For those worried about paying with debit or credit cards, a PayPal account allows you to use your credit cards for payment without providing the details to sellers, and allows you to use your credit card for items where the seller doesn’t have credit card facilities.
STAND UP AND TAKE A BOW – Our aussie designers who are making it big overseas.
ith all the media and press about overseas brands and designers opening up shop here in Australia I thought we should start paying some attention to our own designers who are killing it overseas. We are loved internationally and I think we should congratulate those who are getting it right. Look at our Kaftan Queen Camilla. Camilla has more than 250 international stockists; including some of the big guns like Harrods, Selfridges, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and Intermix. Camilla has just started shipping direct to the US via her new online store www.camillashop. com just to keep up with the demand. I think more of our Australian online retailers should start looking at overseas shipping options; Europe, the UK and US love us why not give them what they want.
Look at Mambo the Iconic Aussie brand that lost its way a little until current owners took it over in 2008. Since the takeover deals have been struck in the US, South Korea and Brazil. In Brazil alone they have struck a deal with a distributor that has 22,000 stockists. One of our favourite American etailers shopbop.com absolutely loves Australian designers. Look at who they stock; Sass & Bide, Zimmerman, Camilla, Josh Goot, Camilla and Marc, We are Handsome, Ellery, Dion Lee, Willow, Shona Joy and Shakuhachi. That’s a lot of Aussies. Mywardrobe.com in the UK also stock Zimmerman, We are Handsome and our swimwear label Jets. I don’t know about you but this makes me want to stand and sing our national anthem. Go you good thing.

RECIPE I FOUND AND
I do love a lamb shank. At first I was a bit unsure about the maple syrup and lamb shank combo. I gave it a go and it is now a regular in the Sheeran household. This recipe was found at www. taste.com.au Enjoy x
SLOW COOKED MAPLE SYRUP LAMB SHANKS
* 1 cup plain flour * 8 large French-trimmed lamb shanks * 2 tablespoons olive oil * 2 large onions, unpeeled, cut into 1cm slices * 2 garlic cloves, crushed * 2 cups beef consommé * 3/4 cup red wine (such as merlot) * 1/3 cup maple syrup * 2 tablespoons cornflour * 2 tablespoons cold water
Add onions and garlic to saucepan. Cook over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes or until soft. Add consommé, wine and maple syrup. Stir to combine. Bring to the boil. Season with salt and pepper. Pour over shanks and cover pan tightly with foil. Roast for 1 1/4 hours. Remove foil. Turn shanks and roast for 45 minutes or until tender.
Transfer shanks to a platter and cover to keep warm. Strain cooking liquid through a sieve. Discard onions. Return liquid to pan. Mix cornflour and water in a bowl until smooth. Stir into liquid and bring to the boil, stirring, over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 5 minutes or until reduced slightly. Serve shanks with gravy, cheese and herb mash and steamed cabbage
Step 1 Preheat oven to 180°C. Place flour and salt and pepper in a shallow dish. Lightly coat shanks with flour. Heat oil in a saucepan over high heat. Cook shanks, in batches, for 3 to 4 minutes or until browned. Transfer to a large roasting pan.
MAUI’S WOOF ALERT Woof it’s cold. Can someone hurry summer along I’m woofing freezing.
Days haven’t been too bad but as soon as that sun goes down it’s cold. I try and snuggle up in bed with mum and dad but I could tell they were getting a little annoyed. I am 27 kilos and as soon as I jump in between them their doona seems to disappear leaving them butt naked; literally. It made sense to start looking for my own heated bed. Mum and dad don’t have to share now and I sleep in the comfort of my own bed.
