ell as you will know, the beginning of the New Year is traditionally met with us declaring our New Year Resolutions! Not that many of us see them out, however trying is a great start! So I thought it would be great to research this tradition around the world and I was surprised at what I found out! So here are the New Year Traditions from around the world: Denmark In Denmark, residents keep a pile of dishes, all broken, in front of the door. For this they save old dishes and people usually throw these on the friends’ doors during New Year. This symbolises friendship and brotherhood and they believe the one with maximum dishes outside, has the most friends. Some Danish are also found to leap chairs during midnight as a symbol of the forthcoming of good fortune! China The Chinese have a unique way of celebrating New Year, where every front door of a house is painted in red which symbolises happiness and good fortune. They hide all the knives for the day so that no one cuts oneself, because that may actually cut the entire family good luck for the coming year. However that doesn’t make any difference to the feast they have during ‘Time’. Brazil Brazilians believe that lentils signify wealth and prosperity.

appy New Year everyone! So it’s January 2018! WHAT? Last year went so fast and here we are staring a brand-new year once again! This month I’ve been researching New Year Resolution traditions from around the world. So they serve food items made up of the legume, like soup or rice on the New Year. On New Year’s Eve, the priestesses dress up in blue and white for an auspicious ceremony celebrated for the water goddess. Also a sacrificial boat filled with jewellery, candles and flowers from the beach of Rio de Janeiro is pushed to the ocean that brings health, wealth and happiness for them. Austria Austrians find good luck charm in suckling pigs. What! Yes it’s true, they serve it on the dinner table with edible pigs! Peppermint ice creams are served as desserts for fortune.

Egypt Egyptians believe that the New Year begins only when the new crescent moon is visible in the sky. They create and extremely festive atmosphere all around and celebrate the New Year with happiness and joy. The official announcement is made in the city of Cairo in a Holy Mosque, and the religious leaders do the needful. Greece

Lead is considered to be auspicious here. They pour molten lead into cold water and the shape that is taken after, predicts the future. Heart shapes symbolise marriage whereas round shapes denote good luck; anchor shapes tell that you need help however a cross signifies someone’s sad demise.

They call it a St. Basil’s Day, one of the forefathers of the Greeks Church, because it is also celebrated as his death anniversary. They bake a special bread, where a coin is buried inside the dough. The procedure of serving the bread is very unique. They offer the first slice to God, second to the bread winner of the house, and the third is meant for the house. If his one contains the coin, spring will hit early that year. Also whoever get the slice with the coin, is supposed to be blessed with extra good luck.

They call the New Year Eve as Saint Sylvester Eve. They believe in throwing family parties, where everyone kisses, exchanges fortune greetings apart from raises toast to welcome the New Year in their own manner. Children usually save money to buy decorative paper and card so that they can write and gift New Year greetings to elders.

In Wales, during midnight, at the initial toll, the back door of the house is first opened and then immediately shut. This symbolises releasing the old year and locking out all the bad luck it brought. At the 12th toll of the clock, the door is re-opened to welcome the New Year will all its goodness, luck and prosperity.

Japan Japanese New Year or Oshogatsu is meant for celebrations with family and it begins with proper decoration of the home to welcome luck and fortune. They clean the entire house, get themselves off from every financial liability, and resolve all issues before the New Year hits. They follow traditions of three things: a pine branch, called kadomatsu, denotes longevity; a stalk of bamboo symbolises prosperity, whereas a plum blossom shows nobility. Before the clock strikes 12, they ring 108 bells to show that the all 108 troubles have been eliminated. Philippines They believe that every round thing is auspicious. So they consume grapes, have coins, wear polkas dotted dresses, as they have faith that circular things attract more fortune and money. They also throw coins as New Year begins to increase wealth and prosperity. Spain The Spanish, eat 12 grapes at every toll of the clock during the New Year. This they believe will bring good luck and happiness for the coming 12 months. Rome The celebrations last for three days where the Romans decorate their houses with greenery and colourful lights, they choose gifts for their loved ones very carefully like Gold, silver, for prosperity, honey for sweetness etc.

We are Booking FEBRUARY 2018

Diary of a Teenager... OMG! Back to reality and I have mock exams after mock exams after mocks. Yep you guessed it...More mocks. It’s driving me insane! I’ve been getting really good grades recently, I got two A*s last week but I’m terrified that it’ll all go away… That I’ll mess up everything. There’s so much stress and it’s so annoying! This school year is going WAYYY to quickly. I don’t know what my New Year’s Resolutions are, I haven’t decided yet… I’m sure I’ll come up with something. On an entertainment level, I got to go see 5FDP (Five Finger Death Punch) over the festive period at Birmingham Arena! They rocked the arena down, they were AMAZING LIVE! Well then people, I’ve just about run out of space and time! That’s it until next month! Take care! Lots of love...

Feeling like you've

Over Indulged

During the Christmas Period? Don’t worry... You are not alone!

Whether you have over eaten just a little or had a total binge over the festive season, January seems like a perfect time to reset the healthy eating clock. So here are a few simple ideas to help your new healthy start not feel so much like torture!

o begin with it’s important to remember the fun you have had over the festive period and the happy memories that you, your family and your friends have made. So let’s kick the New Year off in the right way. Here are 5 great tips:

1. Stay positive

Researchers have found that we’re more likely to adopt healthy habits if they’re presented positively. Being told we shouldn’t do something has less of a lasting impact than if we’re told that eating or exercising will have a positive outcome. Focus on the results you want and treat meals as positive choices to help reach that goal.

2. Forget the fads

Let moderation be your mantra and make sure that you pack your diet with vegetables, fruit, lean protein and wholegrain – introduce new ingredients into your diet gradually over a few weeks to see if you notice any benefits.

3. Sweet and simple

Don’t be scared of sugar. The rules are simple – purge the refined, processed stuff from your diet as much as possible and enjoy natural, sweet sources alongside foods that will slow down absorption and regulate blood sugar. For example, eat fruit together with a small handful of highprotein nuts to lower the overall glycaemic index of your snack. Or satisfy a post-meal sugar craving with a drizzle of honey over protein-rich Greek yogurt.

4. Don't count calories

A calorie is not just a calorie. It's what your body does with that calorie that counts, and what determines this factor is the quality of the food. While it’s important to keep an eye on portion sizes, the health world has shifted its focus from calorie counting to making healthy, nutrient-dense choices that are kind to your digestive system. The old ‘a calorie is a calorie’ mantra has been challenged by recent research that says we should be looking at the type of foods we’re eating rather than just the calorie content.

5.Chew your food

Believe it or not, the simple act of chewing can reduce your calorie intake. It works by increasing the satisfaction you get from meals, thus helping to tide you over between meals. Thoroughly chewing will put less pressure on your digestive system and help your body to absorb more nutrients. The digestion of complex carbohydrates starts with our saliva, which contains an enzyme called amylase – this encourages more vitamins and minerals to be absorbed from your small intestine. Here’s a very simple recipe to help you get started:

Prawn & tomato stew with gremolata topping

Goodness my human servants, it is New Year - 2018 and we furry friends have had the most awesome Christmas celebrations. But just like you humans, it’s time to get back to normal and fit once again. So what better way to start the New Year then, with some New Year Resolutions - for pets of course!

our poor human is going to be very busy once again this month. What with the end of the celebrations and the New Year upon us, it’s a time for starting afresh and embracing a whole new year of fun and games!

5. I will not eat my own vomit! 6. I will not eat "kitty box crunchies"!

And with this in mind, I thought we 4-legged friends should try to assist our human in their quest for change in the coming year. So to begin with here our some New Year resolutions that are sure to help your human this coming year:

7. I will not eat any more socks and then re-deposit them in the garden after processing!

15 New Year Resolutions for Dogs for the year 2018: 1. I will stop trying to find the few remaining clean pieces of carpet in the house when I am about to throw up!

3. I will not eat other animals' poop! 4. I will not lick my human's face after eating animal poop!

11. I will not bark each time I hear a door bell on TV!

12. I will not walk under the big dog when he is peeing! 13. The sofa is not a face towel. Neither are my human’s laps!

8. I will not chew crayons or pens, especially not

2. I will not roll on dead birds, fox poop, cat vomit, slugs, bird poop or that black stuff oozing out of the green recycling bin etc!

the red ones, or humans may think that I am haemorrhaging! 9. When in the car, I will not insist on having the window rolled down when it's raining outside!

14. I will not roll my toys behind the fridge! 15. The wheelie bin collector is NOT stealing our stuff!

10. I will not drop soggy tennis balls in the underwear of someone who is sitting on the toilet!

Gosh Now you’ve got me started I can’t stop! My house mate ‘Helmsley’ wants to share a Cats new Year resolutions with you all. I must admit after reading them, I found them hilarious....So here goes: 13 New Year Resolutions for Cats in 2018: 1. My human will never let me their her pet hamster, and I am at peace with that! 2. I will not puff my entire body to twice its size for no reason after my human has finished watching a horror movie! 3. I will not slurp fish food from the surface of the aquarium! 4. I will not lean way over to drink out of the tub, fall in, and then pelt right for the box of clumping cat litter. (It took FOREVER to get the stuff out of my fur!) 5. I will not use the bathtub to store live mice for late-night snacks! 6. I will not perch on my human's chest in the middle of the night and stare into their eyes until they wake up! 7. We will not play ‘Herd of Thundering Wildebeests Stampeding Across the Plains of the Serengeti’ over any humans' bed while they're trying to sleep! 8. I cannot leap through closed windows to catch birds outside. If I forget this and bonk my head on the window and fall behind the couch in my attempt, I will not get up and do the same thing again!

9. I will not assume the patio door is open when I race outside to chase leaves! 10. When it rains, it will be raining on all sides of the house. It is not necessary to check every door! 11. I will not play "dead cat on the stairs" while people are trying to bring in groceries or laundry, or else one of these days, it will really come true! 12. When the humans play darts, I will not leap into the air and attempt to catch them! 13. When my human is typing at the computer, her forearms are not a hammock!

ew Year is the world's most popularly celebrated festival. Perhaps, everybody would like to know how these celebrations began, from where it originated and what is so important about the festival. Let's give you an insight to the origin of this grand event in a brief form.

Sammy, Poppy & Laura would like to welcome clients new and old to our Salon...

Origin of New Year dates back to the era of emperors. They thought of celebrating a special day which should dot a day for beginning and end of the year. ello my lovelies, as you are reading this we have celebrated a brand new year, so may I start by wishing you all good health and happiness for 2018.

ell my lovelies have you made any new year resolutions? I am going to do the usual and try to eat more healthily and loose a bit of weight this new year. I will start on the 2nd January and try to stick to my new exercise and healthy eating plan for as long as I can!

I am very lucky as I will be spending the beginning of 2018 in a warmer climate. I’m off to Tenerife with my lovely sister and brother in law. I feel very optimistic about the new year as it energises me, and this next one is no different, I love the beginning of the year. It’s such a positive time to take control back of your destiny and look forward to all the challenges that I know will befall me. I’m also confident that whatever happens I can face it head on with lots of enthusiasm and courage! Lovelies, as I get older I feel I am much more adaptable and therefore it's easier to face and understand things with a wiser understanding. When I was younger sometimes I used to just jump straight into situations without thinking them through, and therefore getting myself into all sorts of bother! Never anything too serious but nevertheless I sometimes used to think afterwards that I wish that I had given that particular problem much more thought! However that knowledge my lovelies, only comes with age!.

’d like to wish all of you will have a wonderful new year too. May this new year bring you all good healthy and understanding. Now we’re into January the nights will start drawing out a little and Spring will be just around the corner, so indeed there is lots and lots to look forward to. I always look forward to seeing the first spring flowers especially the snowdrops as they always give me so much joy to see them pop up sometimes through the snow, they are so dainty and bring so much promise of good things to come. So all my lovelies let's all embrace 2018 with open arms and look forward to whatever it brings. One thing is for sure lovelies, with the beginning of a new year we are all to become one year older and life is too short to miss the wonderful opportunities which surround us all. Instead of looking at your glass as half-empty, try looking at it as half-full! Here’s to happy memories, great conversation, belly laughing with your friends. Deeper understandings, positive outlooks, times of reflection and consideration! My saying for this month is:

Cottage Pie with Cheese Crusted Leeks You will need: 400gm minced beef 2 medium onions peeled & chopped 100gm Carrots peeled & chopped small 100gms Swede peeled & chopped small Half a teaspoon of ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon of chopped fresh Thyme 1 tablespoon of chopped fresh Parsley 1 tablespoon plain flour 275ml beef stock 1 Tablespoon tomato purée Salt and ground black pepper 1 Tablespoon of olive oil

Method: Using a heavy based pan First take your pan and heat up the olive oil over a medium heat and fry the onions until they are browned. Now add the diced carrots & swede cook for about 5 mins until they are softened. Remove the vegetables to one side Now turn up the heat slightest and brown the minced meat. Add the cooked veg, cinnamon, herbs and some seasoning. Next stir in the flour and gradually add the stock to the meat mixture. Finally stir in the tomato purée. Now turn down the heat and put a lid on the pan and cook gently for around 30 mins While that is cooking make the topping by, Cooking about 900 gm of potatoes (King Edward are good for this) with a little salt cook until tender - about 25 mins While this is happening prepare 2 good size leeks by cutting them and chopping them. Preheat your oven to 200c /180 fan oven. Once the potatoes are cooked ,drain off the water and add about 50 gm butter and mash them until they are almost puréed. When the meat is ready spoon it evenly into a baking dish. Spread over your mashed potato then sprinkle on the leeks. Grate about 50 gm of mature cheddar cheese and sprinkle over the leeks and potato topping Bake on a high shelf for around 35 mins until the top is crusty and golden. ENJOY!!!

he birthstone for January is the Garnet. We know it for its dark red rich colour, but it can vary so much. From the vibrant red to a rainbow of colours, from rich bohemian garnets to the vibrant greens of the Russian Demantoid and African stave rite, it can also appear in oranges and Browns from Nambia and Sri Lanka to subtle pinks and purples of Rhododendron.

Legend says that the Garnet lights up the night and prevents their owners from nightmares. Garnets have long been carried by travellers to protect against accidents far from home. So all in all its a very lucky stone!

appy birthday to any of you lovely people who has a birthday this month. My lovely son Jason celebrates his Birthday this January month and will be enjoying himself with friends and family no doubt!

Honestly it doesn't take much for my Jason to throw a party, so I’m sure with it being ‘his’ Birthday this month, he will be enjoying this one that little bit more! So Happy Birthday to my lovely and kind son Jason and much love on your special day. xxx

am going to continue to get fit again myself this year. Now I’m in my seventies I find that it’s easier to motivate myself to exercise, and this year I’m going to continue to do lots of walking, my line dancing and my Pilates. I also want to be get back to playing some golf again, it's a great way of keeping fit and I love the scenery around the golf course. Golf is really good exercise for me as its about a five mile walk around the course and of course the fresh air is brilliant also! I’m not as good as I used to be however its simply just practise. I also want to find some new past-times and hobbies this New Year, as sitting around the house too much at my age, makes me grumpy! My old mum, bless her, used to say ’If at

first you don’t succeed, try, try and try again” to me when I felt down or unhappy and I always think of her when I hear it said! Mum was right, life itself is never easy, but too much sitting around and feeling sorry for yourself never achieves anything. So my lovelies, embrace this New Year, stay happy, focused and ready for anything, because life is for living! May I wish you all a prosperous New Year...God Bless

What is the

SECRET to a Successful 2018?

Everybody loves a good secret. In fact, the juicier, the better. Why? Because we all love being insiders. We love the feeling of exclusivity, of knowing something that’s just ours and no one else’s. So what is the secret to success, wealth and happiness then?

oney. Fame. Travel. Relationships. Or the freedom to do whatever, whenever, and with whomever you want. However you characterise success, it’s something that nearly everyone is after. While our definitions of success might differ, the desire to succeed at one thing or another remains constant. Still, even though we might all want to succeed at something, we don’t always do what it takes to follow through. Sometimes, we just get fed up, and we end up throwing in that proverbial towel. We give up when the going gets tough. But not everyone does. So what separates them from the rest of the world’s population? How is it that one person is willing to do all that it takes to reach their goals, while another person gives in to silent resignation at the first sign of resistance? Why is one person willing to sacrifice nearly everything in order to live the life of their dreams, while others are too afraid to take the next step in fear of suffering through a catastrophic failure or embarrassment? It’s quite clear that success has nothing to do with our initial set of circumstances.

Some of the most poor and disadvantaged people in the world have achieved the greatest successes of all time. Oprah Winfrey was born to a single mother on welfare and was physically and sexually abused as a child. J.K. Rowling was divorced, had a daughter, and was living on government assistance before publishing the first book in the Harry Potter series. Success in life has nothing to do with where you start. Sure, people who start advantageously in one area or another might have a leg up, but it has almost nothing to do with where they end up in life. Success transcends circumstances. So what is it then? What’s the magic formula? What’s the secret to success in life, if you will? How can we go from a living a mediocre life, to one of excellence in every manner possible? Can anyone do it? Or is it just some pipe dream that lives in the hearts and minds of the foolish? In this comprehensive 331 page masterpiece ‘Rich Man and the

Dream Maker’, you will discover

life-changing knowledge and uplifting teachings.

No matter who you are, no matter where you are, no matter what your current circumstances, the secrets revealed in this book are going to change your outlook on life forever!

‘Every action has a past which

leads up to it. Every action has a future which proceeds from it. An action implies a desire which prompted it and a thought which shaped it....’ Rich Man and the Dream Maker

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle.
