everyone I’m back with better more H iexciting things do look at! This month I will be

celebrating 3 birthdays in my family, the history of May Day and much more cool stuff - So enjoy!

History of May Day:

ay Day originates from the Pagan festival of Beltane, and falls exactly half a year on from November 1, which also marks various neopagan festivals. The earliest May Day celebrations are thought to have occurred during the Roman era when youths would celebrate the coming of spring with a day of dancing dedicated to the Goddess Flora.

During medieval times, May Day became dedicated to Robin Hood and saw songs and plays performed up and down the country to celebrate the coming of spring. Many May Day celebrations were banned by the Church during more puritanical times, due to the pagan origins of the festival. Some Roman Catholic organisations celebrate the Virgin Mary on May 1st, with a ‘May crowning’ of the Blessed Virgin. The Maypole itself, traditionally made from Birch, is deeply rooted in the Germanic Pagan tradition. In the 16th century, maypoles were erected by a group of villagers in a symbol of community bonding, as a fierce source of inter-village rivalry! Rumour has it that Mayfair in London is named after a particularly debauched and raucous festival held during the 18th century.

Regular Feature

It wasn’t until 1978 that the Labour Government introduced the May Day Bank Holiday to the national calendar. In 2000 serious rioting broke out during the ‘May Day riots’, where masked ‘anti-capitalist’ demonstrators ransacked a McDonald’s and destroyed a number of buildings in the City of London. In 2001 a repeat protest occurred, with 54 people arrested by police after rioting broke out.

Diary of a pre- teenager (me!) This month has three very special birthdays! Madeleine’s 7th birthday (My kid sister on 4th May) She is hoping to get some High School Musical Barbie dolls, Frozen dolls (Anna and Elsa) and an Elsa costume! She is having a Frozen/Disney themed party. My Mum’s birthday (9th May). She is hoping for a night away with my Dad. This next birthday is the big one! Why it’s MY 12th birthday on the 14th May. I am hoping for a tablet, clothes, makeup or Jewellery, anything along those lines would be appreciated! I’ll probably go shopping with my Mum and Nana and do cool girlie things! Did you know me and Olly Murs share the same birthday That’s pretty cool!

I have a Saturday job! I’m being trained by Liz Fowkes as a hairdresser and I absolutely love it. I’ve learnt how to wash hair (Salon way) and blow dry! I can’t wait till I start cutting hair! Our home extension has really come on, we have moved into our new kitchen and we have a working log burner and I love it! I’m writing this column in the kitchen right now and as I write Joey (our dog) is curled up on my feet, fast a sleep. He is hyper most of the time and chases our cats everywhere, so I guess he’s ‘hypered out’ right now! Hey guess what? I’m doing the BBC school news report at Tupton Hall. I did my writing piece on antibullying with one of my friends, Nicole. It’s on the Tupton Hall website so check it out if you can. Back at home, we’ve been decorating again. Me, my Dad and my brother Sol like listening to rock music. One of our favourite bands is Iron Maiden. My personal favourite song by them is 'Hallowed Be Thy Name.' I love the story told in the lyrics. It's set in the olden days and about a prisoner who is waiting in a dungeon to be taken to the gallows. He's sort of had these real strict beliefs all through life, and then, with about two hours to go, he's not really sure. There's one line in it that says, 'If there's a God, then why does he let me die?'.

It’s a great story - sad – but told in a way that makes you listen to the lyrics. My dad say’s it’s his favourite Iron Maiden song too and I remember listening to it with my dad as a younger girl! Here’s the lyrics: I'm waiting in my cold cell, when the bell begins to chime. Reflecting on my past life and it doesn't have much time. 'Cause at 5 o'clock they take me to the Gallows Pole, The sands of time for me are running low. When the priest comes to read me the last rites, I take a look through the bars at the last sights, Of a world that has gone very wrong for me. Can it be that there's some sort of error? Hard to stop the surmounting terror. Is it really the end, not some crazy dream? Somebody please tell me that I'm dreaming, It's not easy to stop from screaming, But words escape me when I try to speak. Tears fall but why am I crying? After all I'm not afraid of dying. Don't I believe that there never is an end? As the guards march me out to the courtyard, Somebody cries from a cell "God be with you". If there's a God then why has he let me go? As I walk all my life drifts before me And though the end is near I'm not sorry Catch my soul 'cause it's willing to fly away

The band made their way down to Brazil for ‘Rock In Rio’ which sold out 90,000 tickets within hours for Maiden’s headline show there on the final night of the Festival. The 2013 dates ended in Chile at the Estadio Nacional, Santiago playing to 60,105 fans: - the largest audience by a British band ever - as reported by national newspaper La Tercera. The year also saw a return to UK’s Donington Park on the 25th Anniversary of the band’s first headline performance at the legendary home of rock in 1988 during the Seventh Son World Tour. This was a record FIFTH time that the band topped the bill at Donington, following two ‘Monsters of Rock’ performances (1988 and 1992) and two spectacular ‘Download Festivals’ (2003 and 2007). The MAIDEN ENGLAND World Tour is the next chapter in the History of Iron Maiden and closely follows 1988’s ‘Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son Tour’ not only in choice of set list but also in production and content. The original ‘Maiden England ’88’ live show was also reissued this year for the very first time on DVD. After 46 shows in 25 countries playing to over a million fans in 2013 alone, the band show no signs of slowing down or losing the formidable passion that has seen them triumphant at the forefront of Metal for over 3 decades!

Mark my words please believe my soul lives on Please don't worry now that I have gone I've gone beyond to see the truth

Here’s a Heavy metal/rock make up tutorial… • Squeeze a pea size amount of a skin perfector/

When you know that your time is close at hand, Maybe then you'll begin to understand Life down here is just a strange illusion.

• Get an eye prima (If needed) and rub over the eye

The song ‘Hallowed By Thy Name’ is off the Iron Maiden album ‘The number of the beast’ and there’s a strange but true story to this album. It’s interesting because strange things started happening to the band during the production of the album in the recording studio. For one, the band had trouble taping (recording) the actual title track song and had to buy new equipment. There was also an even stranger incident involving the Iron Maiden producer Martin Birch, who had a car accident toward the end of the recording of the album. Martin Birch’s had a crash on his way home from the studio. His Range Rover repair bill came out at exactly £666 – when he was presented with the repair bill - Spooky! The album also upset a lot of religious people at the time and people shouted “Rot in hell!” as the band came off stage when touring ‘The Beast on the Road Tour in 1982’! Did you know that even after all these years, 2013 proved another record-breaking year for IRON MAIDEN. Their MAIDEN ENGLAND WORLD TOUR continued into Europe and Latin America, with a short trip back to the USA for 7 shows, including headlining The Battle Of San Bernadino in LA to 30,000 fans.

Derbyshire’s unsung heroes D

erbyshire’s Unsung Heroes’ is a fascinating collection of reminiscences of ordinary Derbyshire people who lived through the Second World War. Some were men who served in the armed forces, some were women who replaced them in the factories or on the farms, some were children having to grow up in a world of air raids, gas masks and evacuation. All have a unique story to tell, whether as teenage soldiers facing the horrors of D Day, a naval gunner braving biting cold, mountainous seas and ferocious air attacks on the Arctic convoys, an RAF prisoner-of-war who helped to organise the Great Escape, a woman who built Spitfires, a Land Girl who worked long hours in all weathers to keep the country fed, children who sat reciting their tables in an air raid shelter while bombs crashed around them…all these and many more stories are told in this amazing collection These were ordinary people living through extraordinary times, and I have called them unsung heroes because without their heroic efforts in resisting the worst enemy this country has ever had to face, the world we live in today would be very different. This great generation is fast fading, and I wanted to pay tribute to them before it is too late. The book contains many contemporary photographs. ‘Derbyshire’s Unsung Heroes’ is on sale at £9.50 and is available from most bookshops in Sheffield, Chesterfield and throughout Derbyshire. It is also available online from Amazon. Author: Malcolm Cowper

ell hello again all my lovely readers, here we are in May. Goodness me, how did we get to May so quickly?

t least lovelies we have trees in blossom and the flowers in the garden in bloom. I love this time of year because we can firmly put the thoughts of winter behind us.

sat in the garden last weekend just having a quiet few minutes and a cup of my favourite Earl grey tea. It was bliss, the birds were singing and I felt how good it was to be alive. I think moments like the ones I spent in the garden are very precious in our busy lives. Sometimes I find that just a few moments out there make’s me feel rejuvenated and ready to face anything. We have had a lot of challenge’s this past 8 months with the building of our new extension but luckily we have been able to overcome them in time. Although at times it’s been very difficult and stressful for all of us, the overall result has been well worth the challenges we have faced.

ell lovelies what do we have to look forward to this month? Well to start, we have two bank holidays. One at the beginning of the month and one at the end of the month. I’m hoping that we will soon be lighting the barbeque again. I love our family barbeques and the gathering of friends and family. Of course my lovely son Jason has to be the chef at our barbeques!

Regular Feature

He also picks the music, lights the BBQ and cooks the meat and fish whilst Emily and I make the salads etc to go with everything! I can never understand you males out there, how come even if you never cook in our kitchens, you always think you should be in charge of the barbeque? I must say though that my lovely son is also a very good cook and he enjoys cooking when he has the time. He’s always inventing new dishes each named the same - ‘Bally Surprise!’

ast month I started my thoughts on creating happiness in this column. Well this month my secret is good health of body and mind which we know involves keeping fit and being very careful with what we eat. We as a family do try to eat healthily and that has been a way of life for many years now, eating healthily becomes a habit, just as eating unhealthily can.

s for the mind bit, I find by keeping my mind active doing my daily crossword and keeping up with current affairs - even if sometimes the news all seems to be doom and gloom – certainly helps with a healthy mind! We three adults once each week have a dedicated dinner party for us adults.

Peppered Tarragon Chicken You will need:

6 Chicken breasts 1 x150g pack of low fat cream cheese with black pepper 1 egg yolk 3Tblsp chopped Tarrag on 12 slices of Palma Ham Small knob of butter A little clear Honey 200gm half fat Crème Fraiche Juice of half a Lemon Salt and Pepper to flav our

Pre heat your oven to 200c or 180 fan oven Make a slice in the sid e of each chicken breast to create a poc ket Mix the cream cheese with the egg yolk and 2 tablespoon of the Tarragon and season well. Divide bet ween the chicken breasts. Then wrap each one in two pieces of parma ham , making sure the chicken breasts are fully covered. Grease a roasting tin with butter then arrange the chicken bre asts onto it. Drizzle over a little hon ey and roast for about 30/35 minutes unt il the chicken is a lovely golden colour and no longer pink in the middle. Remove the chicken bre asts from the tin and leave on one side whilst you make the sauce. Add the crème fraiche and lemon to the roasting tin and pop the tin on the hob bringing it to the boil. Make sure you scrape the tin to release all of the chicken juices. Add the rest of the Tar ragon and season. Serve the Chicken spr inkled with a little more Tarragon and ser ve with New Potatoes and a nice gre en salad. My tip when cooking the Chicken breasts is to use a couple of coc ktail sticks in each one to ensure the fillin gs stay inside - remove before serving. This is a lovely supper dish to serve to either family or friends and will be enjoyed even more wit h a nice chilled glass of French Chard onnay!

This involves feeding the children separately to ourselves, then once they are tucked up in bed we have our meal accompanied with good and lively discussions on lots of different topics! I find it very good for keeping my mind in good order.

nother secret to happiness is to see the beauty of the small things in your life. It can be several different things as little as seeing the beauty in the simple things, like the birds chorus in a morning, or a painting that one of my lovely grandchildren has done for me. Maybe I’ll walk down to the shops and browse, taking the time to smile at a stranger who maybe looks a bit sad. Its amazing how a smile can make other people feel better in an instance.

nce you start to appreciate the small things that surround you everyday, you’ll be amazed how you become aware of so many other simple things that sometimes we all take for granted. Remember lovelies that we are only here once, so I believe that we should make the most of every day. You never know what is around the corner, but that is tomorrow, so send a smile out for today! I will share some more secrets of happiness with you next month.

guess we are all thinking about a holiday. I myself am going over to the sunshine with my lovely sister soon. I also love spending time in the summer with my lovely grand children. It is one of my most favourite holidays of the year as we all get to spend precious time with each other. I know the children will always remember these happy days spent in the sunshine, splashing around in the swimming pool and taking picnics to the beach.

Merge YOUR SKILLS with our ideas...

t’s amazing how we all take for granted our foreign holidays, how different it is to the times as a child when I used to look forward to the train journey more than anything else. In those days it was always a steam train and for a number of years we always went up to Scarborough. We went to the same bed and breakfast for about six years, and over those years we always met up with the same families! & on that note, my saying for this month:

‘Always remember that each new day is a special day. Today will never be tomorrow. It’s better to forget with a smile, than remember with woe‘. Until next month lovelies, God Bless.

How To Make Bunting

irstly you will need to draw a template. Regular A4 paper or thin cardboard is ideal. Use a ruler and a pencil to draw a template on the paper/card. Use the following sizes as a guide for your triangles. Big – 20 x 30 x 30cm; Medium-12 x 20 x 20cm; Small 10 x 15 x 15cm

ext pin the template to your chosen fabric and cut out as many triangles as you can. For 5 metres of medium-sized bunting you will need about 30 triangles. You can use tea towels or any fabric you like. Teat towels have the advantage of already being partially sewn! If using a tea towel, use the hemmed edge as the top edge of the triangle (this will save you having to create your own hem). Cut around the template using pinking shears, normal scissors will do if you don’t own any.

ecide what you are going to attach them to. Cotton webbing and grosgrain ribbon or cord are a little more substantial than satin ribbon. Pin each triangle to the tape/ribbon at equal distances. Leave a gap of between 3cm and 5cm between the flags. Lay out the tape or ribbon and start to pin on the triangles, using the hemmed edge at the top. Continue adding the flags until you reach the desired length. Make sure you leave a longer gap at either end, so that you have enough ribbon to tie up your bunting.

se a standard straight stitch to sew the flags to the ribbon. Using a sewing machine is quicker, but you could do this by hand. If you did not use the ready-made edge from the tea-towel fabric, fold the material under at the top edge, and sew onto the tape.

hen it’s time for embellishments. They will look lovely with Buttons/ Love Hearts or letters made of felt. These can be simply glued on. I also like the idea of sewing little bells on if you are planning to use the bunting for a garden party as it will sound lovely in a breeze. Finally give the pieces a quick iron. Then hang them up!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director John Kendall feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Chesterfield & Mansfield areas and John is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give John a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
