everyone here we are in June 2014. I can’t H ibelieve how quickly this year is zooming past!

I’m now officially 12 years old having celebrated my birthday (an awesome day) on the 14th May....

Diary of a pre- teenager (me!)

inally we have finished our extension and life has pretty much gone back to normal. We are back to watching movies, having barbeques and hanging out with each other, which is really cool after almost a year of disruption. The only downer is that it’s the World Cup and my dad will be engrossed in the footie! Mum me and my Nana, don’t watch football, but my dad and my brother Sol are footie mad! Nevermind, good job I have my own TV as Dad and Sol will be glued to the one downstairs! I went to a sleep-over with my friends last month and it was great fun. We stayed up all night and didn’t sleep! The only downer was that it took me nearly a week to recover - I was so tired for days! So as much as I do love sleep over’s, I would try and get a little sleep next time!

his month I wanted to share one of MY favourite musical artists with you. Avril Lavigne. Avril Ramona Lavigne was born in Belleville, Ontario. Her father, Jean-Claude Joseph Lavigne, named her "Avril" after the French word for the month of April.

At the age of two, she began singing church songs with her mother. Her mum recognised her two-year-old daughter's talents after hearing her sing "Jesus Loves Me" in church. Avril Lavigne has an older brother, Matthew, and a younger sister, Michelle, both of whom teased her when she sang. When Avril Lavigne was five years old, the family moved to Napanee, Ontario, a small town with a population of approximately 5,000. Although she has been struggling with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) since she was a child and was sometimes kicked out of class for misbehaving, her parents supported her singing. Her father bought her a microphone, a drum kit, a keyboard and several guitars and converted their basement into a studio. When Avril Lavigne was 14, her parents took her to karaoke sessions and country fairs, singing songs by Garth Brooks, The Dixie Chicks, and Shania Twain. She also began writing her own songs. Her first song was called "Can't Stop Thinking About You", about a teenage crush, which she described as "cheesy cute". My favourite quote from Avril Lavigne is “I’ve known all my life that this is what I was supposed to do.... Visualising like what it would be like to be famous with my music. And always just dreaming, always daydreaming... ”

n 1999 she won a radio contest to perform with fellow Canadian singer Shania Twain at the Corel Centre in Ottawa, before an audience of 20,000 people. Shania Twain and Avril Lavigne sang "What Made You Say That" It was pretty obvious from here that Avril Lavigne was destined to fulfil her dream of becoming a famous singer/songwriter. During a performance with the Lennox Community Theatre, she was spotted by local folksinger Stephen Medd. He invited her to contribute vocals on his song, "Touch the Sky" for his 1999 album Quinte Spirit. She later sang on "Temple of Life" and "Two Rivers" for his follow-up album ‘My Window to You’ in 2000. In December 1999 Avril Lavigne was discovered by her first professional manager, Cliff Fabri, while singing country covers at a Chapters bookstore in Kingston, Ontario. Fabri sent out VHS tapes of Avril's home performances to several industry prospects and she was visited by several executives. Mark Jowett, co-founder of the Canadian management firm Nettwerk received a copy of Avril Lavigne's karaoke performances recorded in her parents' basement and he arranged for Avril to work with Peter Zizzo during the summer of 2000 in New York, where she wrote the song "Why". She was noticed by Arista Records on a subsequent trip to New York. By 2013, Avril Lavigne would go on to sell more than 50 million singles and 30 million copies of her albums worldwide, becoming one of the top-selling artists releasing albums in the U.S. With over 10 million copies certified by the RIAA in 2009, Billboard named Avril Lavigne the number 10 pop artist in the "Best of the 2000s"

Here’s my favourite Avril Lavigne song:

“Innocence” Waking up I see that everything is okay The first time in my life and now it's so great Slowing down I look around and I am so amazed I think about the little things that make life great I wouldn't change a thing about it This is the best feeling… This innocence is brilliant, I hope that it will stay This moment is perfect, please don't go away I need you now And I'll hold on to it, don't you let it pass you by I found a place so safe, not a single tear The first time in my life and now it's so clear Feel calm, I belong, I'm so happy here It's so strong and now I let myself be sincere I wouldn't change a thing about it This is the best feeling… This innocence is brilliant, I hope that it will stay This moment is perfect, please don't go away I need you now And I'll hold on to it, don't you let it pass you by It's the state of bliss you think you're dreaming It's the happiness inside that you're feeling It's so beautiful, it makes you wanna cry It's the state of bliss you think you're dreaming It's the happiness inside that you're feeling It's so beautiful, it makes you wanna cry It's so beautiful, it makes you wanna cry This innocence is brilliant, it makes you wanna cry This innocence is brilliant, please don't go away 'Cause I need you now And I'll hold on to it, don't you let it pass you by This innocence is brilliant, it's so beautiful, it's so beautiful This moment is perfect, please don't go away I need you now, it makes me wanna cry And I'll hold on to it, don't you let it pass you by...

Finger Knitting Finger knitting is a great, productive way to spend your free time when you need something fun to do. When you're finished, you'll have a beautiful rope of ll a B yarn or wool that you can use for lots of different y il m by E things, such as key ring ropes, hair 1. Start by holding your left (or non-dominant) decorations, a belt, hand with your palm up. Hold the end piece of or even bag wool with your thumb. You will only be using your 4 handles. And it's so fingers for the actual knitting. simple the whole 2. Using your right hand, wrap the wool over your family can join in! pointer finger, back behind your middle finger, over your ring finger then behind your little finger. 3. Now wrap the wool back around your little finger, behind your ring finger, etc. You are basically making loops around each finger. 4. Move the wool up to your knuckles and repeat step 2. 5. Wrap the wool back around your fingers a second time. Now you have 2 rows of loops. Make sure to not wrap too tightly. 6. Now one finger at a time, pull the lower loop over the upper loop and then over the top of your finger. 7. Now you are left with just one row of loops. At this point you can let go of the end of the wool with your thumb. 8. Push down the upper row. It now becomes the lower row. Now repeat steps 4 - 8 over and over until the rope is as long as you want it to be. At first the wool on the back of your hand will look like a mess. Stretch it out gently as you go along. Quickly it will turn into a little rope or very thin scarf. If you want to change colours, cut the first wool, tie it to the end of a different wool, and keep on finger knitting. To finish the rope/scarft/etc: Cut the wool leaving an extra 5 or 6 inches to work with. Carefully pull the remaining single row of loops off of your fingers, run the end of the wool back through each of them, and tighten. This last step is very important. If you miss a loop the entire thing will probably unravel. I usually even go back and tie an extra knot just in case!

Creative Time 47693 Ashbourne Shopper 24pp A5.indd 16

TIPS •You can tighten the rope every few stitches by pulling on the end of the rope. •Thick and soft wool works best. •It is much better to do this all at the one time, or you might lose the rhythm and forget where you were. If you do take a break, slide a pencil through the loops where your fingers are to save your place. •Try to wrap the wool loosely around your fingers so it is easy to pull over. •Get creative! You can use your finger knitting to make just about anything. •If you want to make a thinner, faster strand, simply do the above method using three fingers, two, or even just one finger.

•If you pull on the wool too tightly when it is on your fingers, it can cut off circulation. Remember to keep it loose. •If you suffer from repetitive stress injury, remember to take frequent breaks. •If you see loose loops in your rope, don't cut them. If the loop is close to your knuckles, just pull out the stitches back to the problem and redo that part.

ell hello there my lovelies, here we are in June, that’s half way through the year. Goodness how time flies. At least we are having better weather and the long range forecast is looking good...

ell lovelies, at last our extension is finished. It’s been a long hard slog to get to the end, but it is looking fabulous. We have had so many problems along the way and sometimes it seemed that we were not going to be able to sort things out, but somehow we did it and the end result is great! But, ask me if I would do it again and I would say “No Way!” It has taken it out of us far more than we all expected and we are all very shattered! So lovelies, think long and hard before you commit yourself to almost a year of stress! I could write a book on how to deal with Building Contractors and their workforce... Who knows maybe I will one day?

The thing I am looking forward to the most is getting all of my personal things out of storage, they have been in there for almost 15 months and I have missed having all my special things around me. I think as we all get older we love to have our things to hand and I am looking forward to seeing all of my clutter again! It will be very exciting for the grandchildren to help me unpack. What’s lovely is that my lovely son Jason and his dear wife Emily have sold a lot of their own stuff to make room for mine, which I really do appreciate. But that’s family!

ell lovelies, all you men will be watching The World Cup this month. I know my Jason and Solomon will be watching England with their footie shirts on! They'll be dreaming of winning the World Cup and talking about 1966 - They weren't even born then! But to be honest football does not interest me in the slightest, so that is one thing I will not be watching! But then again it would not do for us all to like the same things. Now Tennis especially Wimbledon is for me well worth watching, so I will be cheering on Andy Murrey hopefully to his second Wimbledon Title. I was so proud of him last year, let’s hope he can do the same this year.

’ve had a great response to my ‘secrets to happiness’ over the past couple of editions so I have included a couple more in this edition. The first one is

‘never be envious of other people’ It is a very negative to envy what other people have, we are all given the same opportunities and it is up to us as individuals to set out to achieve our own dreams and hopes. It’s amazing what you can achieve once you set your mind on it. So if you have a dream go for it and hold it dearly.

Thinking of Wimbledon and Summer I have chosen something fitting this month...

Everything is worth a try and remember if at first you don’t succeed try again! My second secret is ‘Make sure you make

the most of every day’

That particular day will never come back and what you do on that particular day may have a massive impact on how your future turns out. So don’t look back on what you cannot change or what has happened to you in the past with negativity, for from every situation, good or bad, there are lessons to be learned. Remember you can change the future, it’s up to you to make it happen by learning from the past!

will of course be popping off to the sunshine sometime this month for a couple of weeks rest and peace. June has very special memories for me. My late Mum and Dad bless them, were married on the 1st of June and were they still here, would be celebrating their 74th wedding anniversary this year. They were married in 1940, just before my Dad went off to war, and they had a long and very happy life together. My late husband Peter was also born on the 1st June, so God Bless to all of them. I plan to return from my holiday with a spring in my step and a smile on my face to greet each new day!

ell my lovelies we have the longest day to look forward to this month. Which means that the nights will be lighter so much later. I love sitting outside at night and enjoying a glass of chilled white wine in the lazy summer sunshine. It’s lovely to enjoy the daylight until almost 10 o'clock at night. There’s nothing quite like sitting out on a warm evening when all my lively grandchildren are fast asleep in their beds and the house is all quiet. I love the tranquillity of watching the sun set and watching the moon come rise. I think I am still an old romantic at heart and thank goodness for that! It’s good to be gladdened by the simplest of things! Well lovelies I think that is all for this month, I look forward to sharing my thoughts with you again next month and ask you all to kindly remember that you should always look on the bright side of life. We are all very lucky to be alive and well and therefore my saying for this month is:

“Every cloud has a silver lining” Sometimes its harder to find the silver lining, but don’t give up, it’s always there if you look hard enough... Until next month, God bless...

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Martyn Kemp feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Ashbourne & Derby areas and Martyn is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that

it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show

how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Martyn a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
