WOMEN’S CHRISTMAS TEA Sunday December 8th, 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., at the Fred Field Center in Gunnison. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.! Never heard of the Women’s Christmas tea? It is a great way to kick off the holiday season. Join other ladies of the valley for a delightful afternoon with tea, desserts, door prizes, special music and an encouraging message. This year, the guest speaker is Cheryl Ritchie and we will have music with Elaina Jauregui. The event is free, with free babysitting for children 0 – 6 years old. We suggest a $5 donation to help cover the cost of printing, advertising, and babysitting, but most importantly we want all the women of the valley to gather and be inspired and encouraged. Also, bring an extra $1 or canned food to benefit Six Points and the food pantry. This great event, is organized by women, for women. If you want to help, we need women who volunteer to help with setting tables and bringing desserts, please call Sharalee Pederson if you are interested in helping in any way. Sharalee 970-209-9401. Mark your calendars, and join us for the Women’s Christmas Tea - Sunday December 8th, 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m., at the Fred Field Center. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.!

NORDIC SKIING PARADISE FOR ALL LEVELS IN GUNNISON-CRESTED BUTTE MORE THAN 100K OF GROOMED TRAILS, YURT DINNERS, PHOTOGRAPHY ADVENTURES, RACES AND MORE With more than 100 kilometers of groomed Nordic skiing trail, an abundance of backcountry options and a constant flurry of events, Colorado’s Gunnison-Crested Butte Valley is a paradise for those who love skinny skis. Gourmet yurt dining, a photography adventure to a backcountry cabin, clinics, festivals and races are just a glimpse of the action for Nordic enthusiasts.

Crested Butte Nordic Center, a full-service crosscountry ski center conveniently located in the town of Crested Butte, will be open for the season from November 23, 2013 – April 6, 2014, and typically starts grooming trails by Lily Lake in early November. Gunnison Nordic Club also begins laying track as soon as snowfall allows. Gourmet Yurt Dinners

Click into cross-country skis or snowshoe and travel along trails lit by tiki-torches and moonlight to Crested Butte Nordic’s Magic Meadows Yurt for a scrumptious fivecourse dinner. The dinners have become so popular that the schedule has expanded to 10 this year, starting on December 21, with a Winter Solstice Dinner and concluding on March 15, with a Full Moon Dinner.

It’s an easy one-mile trek each way (guides are available upon request), with doors opening at 6:00 p.m. and dinner served at 6:30 p.m., with live music throughout. Local chef Josephine Kellett prepares the culinary goodness with an entrée selection featuring Steak Au Poivre, Encrusted Filet of Salmon, Wild Mushroom Risotto and Paradise Chicken with High Mountain Bacon Jam. The cost is $70 for adults and $35 for children (under age 12) and includes a trail pass and equipment rental; alcohol and gratuity are extra. For the New Year’s Eve Yurt Dinner & Party, the pricing and times are slightly different. Visit www.cbnordic.org or call 970- 349-1707. Photography Workshops on Skis

Combine fine dining at the yurt and learn the basics of night photography at two workshops on February 15 and 22 presented by local professional photographer Xavier Fane. Participants will meet at the Peanut Lake Trailhead at 5:30 p.m. and return at 10:00 p.m., practicing camera manipulation adapted to winter conditions, creative composition, and long exposure settings and techniques for low light/night photography. The maximum number of participants is six, and the price of $175 includes the Yurt Dinner, instruction and ski/snowshoe rental. For reservations and details, call Crested Butte Nordic at 970- 349-1707 and visit www.cbnordic.org, or contact Xavier directly at 970-2756226.

Another talented local professional photographer, Raynor Czerwinski, is offering overnight cross-country ski tours and photography workshops on January 3 – 4, February 3 – 4, March 1- 2, and March 16 – 17. Workshops begin at 11:00 a.m. with a four-mile ski on moderate terrain to Gothic, where participants stay overnight in the spacious Maroon Cabin and return to the trailhead by noon the following day. Beginner to advanced photography instruction is offered utilizing incredible subject matter such as the sunset over Gothic’s historic buildings, dramatic mountainous scenery and nighttime sky. Czerwinski also is talented in the kitchen, with last year’s participants enjoying dishes such as rack of lamb with a cabernet demi-glase accompanied by roasted asparagus and truffled fingerling potatoes. The adventure is being offered by Art Studio of the Center for the Arts. Maximum enrollment for each workshop is six participants, and the cost is $235. For additional details, go to www.crestedbuttearts.org. Sharpen Skills

Improve skills and enjoy high-altitude, early-season skiing with Crested Butte Nordic Council’s annual Thanksgiving Training Camp on November 28 – 30. Beginning, intermediate and advanced skate and classic clinics will be offered by a team of talented instructors. Participants also can take Pilates classes for overall fitness and learn about waxing techniques and take part in the Winter Kick-Off Film Night on Friday featuring “Nord for Sola” and other short outdoor adventure films shown at Center for the Arts Crested Butte and the Winter Kick-Off Party & Silent Auction at Secret Stash with great food, cocktails, music and a silent auction.

At Learn to Skate Ski for Free clinics, Crested Butte Nordic Center instructors introduce participants to the art of skate skiing. The clinics are held at 1:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month: January 2, February 6, and March 6. Reduced-priced ski rentals are available for participants, and individualized instruction for classic and skate skiing is always available by appointment. For more details about Crested Butte Nordic's camps and clinics, call 970-349-1707 and visit www.cbnordic.org.

Gunnison Nordic Club is offering clinics for classic and skate skiing on Saturdays in January. New this year is a groomers’ clinic that teaches the finer points of grooming Nordic track using snowmobiles and Tidd Tech groomers. The date for this January clinic will be announced in the near future. Details about all Gunnison Nordic Club clinics will be posted when available at www.gunnisonnordic.com.

Project Healing Waters Visits Wilder on the Taylor for Third Year

On this week of Thanksgiving, Wilder on the Taylor is thankful for the military men and women who serve and protect the United States. This fall, the recreational and preservation ranch community located between Gunnison and Crested Butte hosted Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing program based at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs for the third year in a row. The 2,100-acre historic ranch and the valley’s beautiful scenery and incredible fishing have been a soothing respite for disabled active military service personnel and veterans healing from physical and emotional trauma. “We are honored to be involved with such a special organization of true American heroes; each and every member has served our country,” says Ron Welborn, development partner at Wilder on the Taylor. This year, eight soldiers and a PHWFF mentor enjoyed fishing, camaraderie, and three nights of relaxation in four restored cabins that overlook a two-mile stretch of the Taylor River at Wilder. Lu Photo courtesy of: Project Healing Waters – Colorado Springs Warner, master guide for Wilder, along with Brad Crosby and Crested Butte Anglers provided fishing expertise. “I can’t tell you how much Don and I enjoy hosting these men every year. This year was particularly fun. The whole group had such great attitudes, each and every one of them is proud of serving our country,” says Shelly Sabrowski, who has managed the ranch with her husband, Don, for 18 years. “It’s a really neat thing to be part of, I feel blessed giving back just a small amount of all they have given to us.” PHWFF was founded in 2005 by retired Navy Captain Ed Nicholson at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. The Colorado Springs chapter was started in 2007. For information, visit www.projecthealingwaters.org and Project Healing Waters – Colorado Springs Facebook page.
