Curecanti National Recreation Area Superintendent Connie Rudd announces the extension of the Morrow Point Boat Tour season through September 11, 2011. The longer tour season will allow passengers to enjoy the coming fall color in the upper Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The Morrow Point Boat Tour is a ranger guided activity that showcases seven miles of the upper Black Canyon of the Gunnison from a 40-foot, 42-passenger pontoon boat. The tour runs twice daily (except Tuesdays) at 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.. Reservations are required for all boat tours; fees are $16.00 for adults, $8.00 for children (under 13), and $8.00 for Senior (Golden Age) or Access Pass holders. Curecanti will also be extending the ranger-led night hike schedule by another week by offering an additional full moon hike on September 10 at the Dillon Pinnacles Trail. The hike departs the Dillon Pinnacles trailhead to explore the moonlit landscape on the shores of Blue Mesa Reservoir. There is no cost for the hike, but reservations are required; space is limited to the first 15 to reserve. For more information on either program or to make reservations, please call 641-2337 extension 205.

Bike art addS to Fun oF watChing uSa Pro CyCLing ChaLLenge Next week, the Gunnison-Crested Butte Valley will be hosting two of the premiere stages of Colorado’s inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge and adding a touch a whimsy with locally created bike art along the route. The only mountain top finish of the race takes place in Mt. Crested Butte on August 23, and the Queen Stage launches in Gunnison on August 24. Gunnison residents Karah Cunningham and Leia Morrison wanted to include the artists of Gunnison County in celebrating the USA Pro Cycling Challenge. During the winter months, they collected old and new bike parts and accessories so artists would have plenty to stir up their imaginations over a period of three months. Many of the parts were donated by the City of Gunnison. In early August, the pieces were installed along the Stage 1 and Stage 2 routes of the race in the GunnisonCrested Butte Valley, and locals and visitors have been having fun spotting the creations that range from an “evolution of the bike” hillside display and a Flying PBR Dog sculpture to a colorful bike rack and a functional lamp. A detailed map of the bike art locations can be found in the Pro Cycling Challenge Guide that will be inserted in this week’s Gunnison Country Times, and a photo gallery is posted at www.UPCCinfo.com (click on the individual photos to find out their locations). Also go to www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150293905988711 .353994.260846108710 to vote for your favorite bike art. There are several pieces for sale, with part of the proceeds donated to the Gunnison Trails Commission. To purchase, contact Karah Cunningham at 596-0166. For all the local details about lodging, activities, viewing opportunities and more during the race, visit www.UPCCinfo.com. Information about the entire race can be found at www.usaprocyclingchallenge.com.
