Cottonwood Pass

As advertised, Cottonwood Pass will OPEN ON 8/12/19 at approximately 9am after inspections are made for proper signage, with restrictions and traffic delays. The Contractor has notified Gunnison County that due to recent thunderstorms they have not completed placing gravel on the upper section of the road. If rainy conditions exist, drivers should expect slick, muddy conditions and reduce speed accordingly.

TOP OF THE WORLD GARDEN CLUB YARD OF THE WEEK

The Top O’ the World Garden Club is pleased to present the Yard of the Week award to Andrea and John Pennington. Their house is located at 204 Denver and is one of Gunnison’s first stone houses, having been built in 1882 for Alonzo Hartman and family. Perhaps the tallest spruce tree in the city can be found at the corner of their large lot. Of interest and reminiscence of the past is an unusual planter made of two mining skids butted together and filled with iris and flowering annuals. A small windmill with hanging baskets in full bloom is nearby. The patio, recently added onto the garage, gives guests a welcoming and private visiting area while enjoying the hummingbirds. A nice rhubarb plant and tomatoes are the main plants in the nearby garden.

BEAR ACTIVITY ON THE GRAND MESA

The Grand Valley District of the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests and Colorado Parks and Wildlife are aware of the increased black bear activity in and around the Cobbett and Ward Campgrounds. Due to improper human food storage and disposal practices, the bear has become food-conditioned, approaching campers and campsites in the area. Over time, food-conditioned bears may become bold or aggressive in their attempts to obtain human food – posing a danger to individuals, their property and their pets. This can ultimately lead to the bear being euthanized. Bears have good memories and will return to places they’ve found food.

All recreationalists are asked to use the following food storage and disposal practices: • Only have the food out that you are actually using; if you’re not using it, put it back into storage, do not leave food or other attractants (i.e. toothpaste, soap, lotion etc.) unattended, even for a few minutes. Keep a clean camp, whether you’re in a campground or in the back-country. • Allow grills to burn for a couple of minutes after cooking to burn off grease and to eliminate odors. Clean the grill after each use. • Always keep your food within arm's reach and don't turn your back to your food. • When away from camp, store food and other attractants in an approved bear canister or hang them in a tree at least 10 feet high and 4 feet from the trunk, never in your tent. • When car-camping, secure all food and coolers in a locked vehicle after you’ve eaten. • Keep a clean camp and practice “Pack-It-In, Pack-It-Out”. Do not use fire rings to dispose of food, cooking grease or food scraps. If approached by a food-conditioned black bear remember the following: • If the bear behaves aggressively, try to intimidate it by raising arms or a large object over the head and shouting loudly. • If charged, throw rocks, branches, or other objects at the bear. Be threatening. Do not run. • If attacked, fight back! Shout loudly and try to remain standing. Protect head and neck if possible.

• Expect up to 30 minute delays, travel through the work zone will be led by a pilot car; • NO TRAILERS OR TOWED VEHICLES, INCLUDING BOATS, CAMPERS AND OHV’S OF ANY KIND WILL BE ALLOWED; • No vehicles over 36’ in length or wider than 8’6” will be allowed; • ALL side roads that access Cottonwood Pass are still CLOSED; • Parking areas ARE NOT available. Contact Gunnison County Public Works Department at 970-641-0044 with questions.

CENTER STAGE

Crested Butte Film Festival Monthly Film Series - Ask Dr. Ruth: Thursday, August 15. 7:00 p.m. $12 As her 90th birthday approaches, Dr. Ruth revisits her painful past as a Holocaust survivor and her career as America's most famous sex therapist in this fascinating, liberating documentary. Standing at four-foot-seven, Dr. Ruth Westheimer is a force. A pioneer in the field of sex therapy, she became a household name in the ‘80s and ’90s—and still promises the best sex you’ve ever had if you listen to her. Her infectious energy is colored with an almost arresting openness that is joyous and non-judgmental. Alongside her optimism, however, are storybook-like animations that bring to life Dr. Ruth’s childhood as an orphan of the Holocaust. The tragic loss of being separated from her parents and never seeing them again shaped how she would embrace the world. The film is an inspiring—at times joyous—and entertaining portrait of her life at the vanguard of the women’s movement and the sexual revolution, one that reveals the darkness Dr. Ruth emerged from to bring light to so many people. Running time: 99 minutes. Not rated. Performing Arts Alpenglow – AJ Fullerton: Monday, August 19. 5:30 p.m. Free The Center’s free outdoor concert series presents AJ Fullerton – a skilled guitarist with up-tempo blues licks and fingerpicking combined with a country roots flair. Irwin Brewing will be on hand serving up their hand-crafted beer, or bring your own cooler to enjoy, and you can grab a bite from Tully’s on site. It’s the last Alpenglow of the season! Catch it at Red Mountain Park in Crested Butte South. Trevor Hall: Friday, August 16. 8:00 p.m. $30 Singer-songwriter Trevor Hall realized early on that music was more than a passion— it was his life’s art. At age 16, he recorded his first album. Soon after that, he left his South Carolina home for Idyllwild Arts Academy in California where he studied classical guitar and was introduced to yoga and meditation, which would greatly influence his life and music, an eclectic mix of acoustic rock, reggae, and Sanskrit chanting imbued with a refreshingly universal message.

Welcome to Gunnison Car Show week! Thank you so much for coming and for supporting the car hobby. Our club is made up of a group of very hard working and dedicated members who love cars. We donate the proceeds of the show to local non-profits to help them provide services and benefits to the Gunnison Valley. The Gunnison Car Show has the coolest cars and the coolest mountains around. I would like to thank the Gunnison community for your support of our club and our hobby. I would also like to thank the folks at the City of Gunnison and the Gunnison Police Department for your help with the use of Jorgensen Park and the closure of Main Street on Friday night. Without you we could not have a fun and exciting car show weekend. Lastly, I would like to thank the long time and dedicated car club members and their families who sacrifice much of their summer and sanity to plan this show. Beckett Tyrer, Kevin and Robyn Tutor, Jack Loken, Fred Henry, Brandon Vader, Gary Hausler and Gary Shondeck. Without these great people there would be no show. Thank you so much.
