THE CRESTED BUTTE MOUNTAIN HERITAGE MUSEUM MINER’S BALL

Looking for a new event? The Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum has your answer! The Museum is pleased to announce their first ever Miner’s Ball! This party that benefits the Museum will be held at Kochevar’s Saloon on Friday, February 28th, starting at 7:00 p.m. This is a dinner and dance party. Attire is Crested Butte “anything goes”. Some volunteers will be dressed in outfits of the period from the 1880’s to 1930’s. The Museum is very pleased to announce that dinner will be catered by Jason Vernon of the Soupcon so it will be fabulous. Dancing in conjunction with the dinner will start close to 9:00 p.m. for all of you who want to start shaking it earlier than most bands usually start playing! Tickets for dinner and dance are limited due to space and are only $50 a person. This event could sell out so plan ahead if you want to attend. Think about getting a group of friends to join you. Tables will seat 4 or 6 people. There is no extra charge to reserve a table but you must do that through Glo if you wish to confirm that you can sit together. You may call the Museum and reserve tickets. As a treat at dinner, there will be some special guests that will entertain everyone. The Museum is pleased to have two local bands play this event. Starting at dinner a new organ jazz trio will hold their debut for the Museum. Tyler Mast, organ player and music teacher at the school, Les Choy, of Gypsy Jazz Social Club fame and Gilbert Frayer of Mine Control are the members of the new band making their Crested Butte debut. This is very exciting for the Museum to have these talented musicians play for the first time at the Miner’s Ball. Then Mine Control will play for the dance and doors will open at 10:00 p.m. for those who want to dance the night away! It was very important for the Museum to support local musicians from Crested Butte at this inaugural event. Entrance fee for dancing will be only $10. This is the Museum’s major fundraiser for the winter so be sure to put this date in your calendar. Come and bring your friends! The Museum is holding a raffle in connection with the Miner’s Ball. Raffle tickets will be sold at the Post Office prior to the Ball. You can also buy tickets from Board members and at the Museum. Prizes are fantastic and include $1,000 cash for first prize, second prize is golf and lunch for four at the Skyland Country Club worth $575, third prize is a float trip from Three Rivers Resort and dinner at Garlic Mike’s for four people worth $275, as well as forth prize is a gift certificate for $250 to the Artists of the West Elk (A.W.E.) Gallery. Thanks goes out to these wonderful sponsors!! Raffle tickets and event tickets are on sale at the Museum daily from noon to 6:00 p.m. Volunteers are still needed to help with this new exciting event! Call Glo at 3491880 with any questions or if you would like to volunteer.

2014 USA PRO CHALLENGE The 2014 USA Pro Challenge presents the most challenging course to date, including a mountain-top finish at Monarch Mountain, steep hill climb up to Mount Crested Butte and the return of the uphill time trial in Vail, the second to last day. “No doubt, not even knowing the exact courses yet, this will be the most difficult to date,” said Tom Danielson of Team Garmin-Sharp and the 3rd overall finisher in 2013. “After some pressure from athletes, including myself, they’ve included a true mountain-top finish, which is cool. There doesn’t appear to be an easy stage, at least on paper. It’s really exciting.” The race kicks off in Aspen for the second straight year before moving south for a return to Crested Butte/Mount Crested Butte, which has played a pivotal spot to gain time in previous years races. The race then heads to a start in Gunnison with a route to Monarch Mountain for a first-time visit. The race will then transfer on to the Front Range for a circuit race in Colorado Springs, the state’s second largest city, and home to the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Cycling. A short transfer the next day will take cyclists to a start at Woodland Park in the shadows of Pike’s Peak before racing to Breckenridge, a community that has played host to a stage of every USA Pro Challenge. The final two days will see familiar race hosts. Vail will play host to the famous individual time trial up Vail Pass to finish near 10,000 feet. The final day, as voted by fans, will start in the mecca for endurance sports, Boulder, and route through fan-friendly Golden over Lookout Mountain en route to the ultimate finish in downtown Denver. “The 2014 USA Pro Challenge is going to be the most exciting year yet,” said Rick Schaden, owner of the USA Pro Challenge. “All of our cities have been such great hosts over the history of the race. There are so many iconic Colorado cycling locations which is going to make this one great race!” Shawn Hunter, the CEO of the USA Pro Challenge, said of the process of allowing fans to pick the final stage: “Cycling fans are so passionate and such an important part of the sport, so we decided to give them a voice in the route selection process. We wanted to try something new this year and by incorporating fan feedback we have come up with what is going to be an incredible final day of racing.” Taking place August 18-24, the host cities and stages of the 2014 include - Stage 1: Monday, August 18 – Aspen and Snowmass Village Circuit Race; Stage 2: Tuesday, August 19 – Aspen to Mt. Crested Butte; Stage 3: Wednesday, August 20 – Gunnison to Monarch Mountain (mountaintop finish); Stage 4: Thursday, August 21 – Colorado Springs Circuit Race; Stage 5: Friday, August 22 – Woodland Park to Breckenridge; Stage 6: Saturday, August 23 – Vail Individual Time Trial; Stage 7: Sunday, August 24 – Boulder to Denver. Additional details regarding the start and finish locations of the 2014 race, as well as the specific, detailed route will be announced in the spring. COMMUNITY TAIZÉ SERVICE: Open to all.
