EXTENSIVE RESEARCH HAS FOUND the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to be a cost-effective investment that improves the nutrition and health of low-income families leading to healthier infants, more nutritious diets and better health care for children. WIC provides nutritious foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health care and social services for millions of low-income families. Healthy foods are loaded on an eWIC card that works like a debit card. For a family to participate, it must have gross income of no more than 185 percent of the federal poverty level (now $37,296 for a family of three). Eligible applicants who already receive SNAP (formerly food stamps), Medicaid, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families is automatically considered income-eligible. Colorado Parks and Wildlife is continuing its baiting operation at 13 sites across a 50-mile stretch of the Gunnison Basin. Deer and elk are responding well and most animals have been pulled well back from the U.S. Highway 50 corridor. As of February 1, through its monitoring program of radio-collared deer, CPW biologists have found that doe survival so far this winter is 97 percent and fawn survival is 69 percent. Overall, body condition of deer throughout the basin looks good. “We are traveling back and forth to the sites every day, so we have a good handle on how things are looking,” said J Wenum, area wildlife manager for CPW. “The baiting efforts has been successful and the numbers of deer and elk are noticeably lower near most areas of Highway 50 compared to previous weeks. Drivers should still use caution.” In the Tomichi Heights area CPW is asking that residents discourage deer from hanging out in the subdivision. Pushing deer away from the residences and not feeding them will help get the deer onto natural food sources and away from hazards such as traffic, dogs, livestock and barbed wire fences. Uncontrolled dogs are causing problems throughout the basin. CPW officers are investigating a report of a dog harassing and killing at least one deer. If you see problems with dogs chasing wildlife, please call the CPW office. Everyone is reminded to avoid recreating in areas that might cause disturbance to deer and elk. The less the animals are forced to move, the better chance they have of making it through the winter. An emergency closure that prohibits small-game hunting and shed-antler collecting will continue in the basin through May 15. If you see people entering the closure area please contact the Gunnison CPW office at 970641-7060. A map of the closure area and more information about the baiting operation, wintering wildlife and deer survival studies can be found at the CPW web page.

A special heartfelt thanks to Rita Bohn and Bob Wojtko who were instrumental in helping organize the event, providing the sound system, and especially for teaching this amazing group of students ballroom dance lessons. We are especially grateful to the Elks Lodge for the use of the facility. A special thanks to Jan Badgley and Hometown Happenings for her support, door prizes, and the great photos! We also greatly appreciate the support received from Boomers and Beyond, Geri Howard (Gunnison County Senior Resource Office), Rodney Barnett at Aero Care, and Sodexo. RIDE THE ROCKIES 2017 TO INCLUDE SEVERAL WESTERN SLOPE STOPS!

The Denver Post Ride The Rockies Bicycle Tour presented by ViaWest is excited to announce the route for its annual summer event. The 2017 ride will take place over seven days from Sunday, June 11 to Saturday, June 17. 2,000 cyclists from across the country, chosen through a lottery registration, will be treated to the majestic views and challenging terrain of some of the best miles Colorado has to offer to the cycling community. The 32nd Tour will showcase the communities of Alamosa, Pagosa Springs, Durango, Ridgway, Montrose, Gunnison, and Salida. Beginning in Alamosa, the ‘Gateway to Colorado’s Great Sand Dunes,’ cyclists will ride through some of the same mountain passes made famous by the historic Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. From Alamosa, cyclists will cover 447 miles and ascend over 32,000’ vertical feet, all the way to the ‘Heart of the Rockies’ in Salida. Keeping to tradition, the course will feature some of Colorado’s most scenic and breathtaking views. Highlights of the route include: Wolf Creek Pass, Pagosa Hot Springs, Yellowjacket Pass, the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Hesperus Hill, Coal Bank Pass, Molas Pass, Red Mountain Pass, Ouray Hot Springs, Cerro Summit, Blue Mesa Reservoir, and Monarch Pass. Cyclists will be treated to some of Colorado’s finest mountain towns that host the Tour and the introduction of a new host community, Ridgway. “There is a reason why Ride The Rockies is no stranger to the majority of the communities highlighted on this year’s Tour; the routes between each town are spectacular and the charming hosts do an exceptional job of welcoming everyone associated with the event,” said Renee Wheelock, Tour Director. “We’re ecstatic to revisit this region and thrilled to introduce Ridgway as a new overnight community.” New this year, Ride The Rockies has added a “Government Springs Challenge” option to day five. Cyclists may choose to take the regular 32-mile route from Ridgway to Montrose, which will serve as a nice recovery ride, or they may opt in for some elevation while exploring an out-and-back route highlighted in the Official Montrose Visitors Guide in 2016, for a stage total of 51 miles. “Ride The Rockies is an unforgettable experience for the participants, volunteers and host towns across the state,” said Jason Carolan, Chief Technology Officer of ViaWest. “We are proud to be a part of a tradition that gives athletes the opportunity to experience the beauty of our state and the hospitality of our people, all while giving back to the community. This year, we will see some unforgettable landscapes and really highlight what makes Colorado such a special place. We’re excited to be in our fourth year of our partnership with Ride The Rockies and look forward to continuing our commitment to Colorado and Cycling!” Local hotels, restaurants and retailers in each host community benefit from an estimated $250,000 in economic impact each day of the tour. Increasing this impact, The Denver Post Community Foundation will award a $5,000 grant to a nonprofit organization in each host town. For over three decades, Ride The Rockies has showcased some of the state’s most beautiful regions, a stewardship made possible by countless volunteers, loyal sponsors, dedicated partners and gracious host communities.

“THE WORD ‘ESTABLISHMENT’ is a general term for the power elite in international finance, business, the professions and government, largely from the northeast, who wield most of the power regardless of who is in the White House. Most people are unaware of the existence of this ‘legitimate Mafia’. Yet the power of the establishment makes itself felt from the professor who seeks a foundation grant, to the candidate for a cabinet post or State Department job. It affects the nation’s policies in almost every area.” Edith Kermit Roosevelt 1961. - Robert Tim Allen 970-5968977 (2/22). VETERANS, TROOPS CAN ALWAYS SALUTE: A change to Section 9 of the US Flag Code written into the Defense Authorization Act this year now gives veterans and members of the US Armed Forces the authority to render a salute to the flag, whether or not they are wearing identifying veteran apparel such as an American Legion cap. All others present should remove any headwear, face the flag and place their right hand over their heart. Headwear should be held to the left shoulder, leaving the right hand over the heart. These acts are to be conducted anytime there is a hoisting or lowering of the US Flag, whenever it passes. Citizens of foreign countries should stand at attention. (2/15).

PLEASE: do not ride your bike on sidewalks and remember to ride on the right hand side of the road and to stop at stop signs. (2/15). ONE REASON THE STAMP ACT was so hated is that it was an internal tax, a tax on the colonists’ everyday business. A tax on an imported item could be avoided by not purchasing that item. But a tax on daily affairs could not be avoided and they saw it as an a threat to their lifestyle. If this tax succeeded, what would come next? - Brought to you by Gunnison Valley Chapter DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) (2/15).
