FREE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM, THE JESUS LEAGUE WILL START BACK UP JANUARY 23RD

Sign your kids up to be a part of the most EPIC after school program ever - the JESUS LEAGUE. Community Church will be hosting a weekly after school program starting, Thursday, January 23rd, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Webster Hall. This program is open to all Children 1st through 5th grade. The Theme is "The Jesus League" where your kids have opportunities to be Super Heroes in their community. Last semester members of the Jesus League were spotted throughout the town -- doing random acts of kindness for others. This program is designed for children to experience God's love through friendships, faith and community service. Over the next 12 weeks, members of the Jesus League will deepen their relationship with God, one another and those who need a helping hand. By rotating through activity centers in small groups, kids grow in friendship with one another. New this semester will be monthly visits to our local senior center to participate in fun activities with our local elderly community. This addition to the program is in honor of our sister in Christ, Bonnie Cook, who dedicated her life to serving others and was very involved with the Senior Living Facility. THE FORGOTTEN 59

Larry McDonald, local historian, will present “The Forgotten 59” a slideshow about the sorrowful details of the 59 men and boys who perished in the Crested Butte Mine Disaster on that frigid morning of January 24, 1884. What was the cause of the disaster? Did anyone survive? Why were boy’s as young as 12 working in the mine? This years’ presentation includes many new details about the disaster and the victims who perished. An original copy of the February 16, 1884 Harpers Weekly wood engravings of the disaster made from the photos taken by Gunnison photographer, George Mellen, will also be on exhibit. If you are interested in learning more about this important local event, presentations are scheduled at the Gunnison Library on Tuesday, January 21, and Crested Butte Library on Thursday, January 23, beginning at 7:00 p.m. There will also be a brief ceremony at the Crested Butte Cemetery mass grave, including a reading of the victim’s names, on Friday, January 24, beginning at 7:30 a.m. (Skis or snowshoes required). COLORADO PARKS AND WILDLIFE PROMOTING BOATING SAFETY, RESPONSIBLE WATER RECREATION AT 2020 DENVER BOAT SHOW

The 2020 Denver Boat Show, Colorado’s largest boat show, takes place January 17 - 19 at the Colorado Convention Center and Colorado Parks and Wildlife will be there promoting boating safety and responsible water recreation with educational information and fun activities. “Safety is key to enjoying Colorado’s many fantastic water opportunities," said Grant Brown, CPW’s Colorado boating program manager. “We at Colorado Parks and Wildlife are excited to promote boating safety, specifically the importance of wearing a life jacket, and the importance of preserving water recreation and infrastructure through the invasive species program at the Denver Boat Show.” Colorado Parks and Wildlife is an exhibitor at the show. The CPW booth will showcase boat safety and the invasive species program. Highlights include cameos by Talon the red-tailed hawk boating safety mascot, information about watercraft inspection and decontamination, an iron-on T-shirt coloring station, free giveaways, and boat safety class information. “Preventing the introduction and spread of zebra and quagga mussels and other invasive species is critical to providing outstanding water-based recreation in Colorado,” said Elizabeth Brown, CPW invasive species program coordinator. “We are grateful for the support of boaters and the Colorado Marine Dealers Association for their continued participation in the program.” CPW’s invasive species program has been very successful preventing infestations of invasive species ranging from zebra and quagga mussels to noxious weeds in bodies of water in Colorado. Aquatic invasive species negatively impact the aquatic ecosystem, fisheries, water-based recreation, and water supply and distribution systems for municipal, industrial and agricultural supply. The invasive species program needs the support of Colorado boaters and anglers who enjoy and benefit from clean water in Colorado. Learn more at the CPW website.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN ROSE 322 E. DENVER AVE. Refreshments and live entertainment by Josh Mauffray. See what Dani has in store!

Commercial fishing outfitters and their guides wishing to take clients on State Wildlife Areas in the Gunnison area must now be permitted with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. A meeting to explain regulations, applications, and fees for commercial use is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 29 at the Colorado Parks and Wildlife office, 300 W. New York Ave., in Gunnison. CPW staff will explain the pilot program and answer questions. CPW is considering issuing commercial use permits for the following properties owned and managed by CPW in the basin: Roaring Judy State Fish Unit; Cochetopa State Wildlife Area, including Dome Lakes; and Gunnison River State Wildlife Area. Commercial use on State Wildlife Areas has always been regulated by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, however a formal program has not been implemented in the Gunnison Basin. “Recreational use of these finite resources continues to increase and CPW is seeking a balance between commercial use and the general public’s enjoyment of State Wildlife Areas” said Area Wildlife Manager J Wenum. “We hope that over time,we can develop a program that meets the needs of the majority of our constituents, while putting first priority on the natural resources we are charged with managing.” Contact the Gunnison CPW office at 970-641-7060 for information on the meeting.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials say an eyewitness report of six large canids traveling together in the far northwest corner of the state last October, in conjunction with last week's discovery of a thoroughly scavenged elk carcass near Irish Canyon - a few miles from the location of the sighting - strongly suggests a pack of gray wolves may now be residing in Colorado. According to the eyewitness, he and his hunting party observed the wolves near the Wyoming and Utah borders. One of the party caught two of the six animals on video. “The sighting marks the first time in recent history CPW has received a report of multiple wolves traveling together,” said CPW Northwest Regional Manager JT Romatzke. “In addition, in the days prior, the eyewitness says he heard distinct howls coming from different animals. In my opinion, this is a very credible report.” After learning about the scavenged elk carcass, CPW initiated an investigation which is still ongoing. At the site, the officers observed several large canid tracks from multiple animals surrounding the carcass. According to CPW wildlife managers, the tracks are consistent with those made by wolves. In addition, the condition of the carcass is consistent with known wolf predation. (Photos below) “The latest sightings add to other credible reports of wolf activity in Colorado over the past several years,” said Romatzke. “In addition to tracks, howls, photos and videos, the presence of one wolf was confirmed by DNA testing a few years ago, and in a recent case, we have photos and continue to track a wolf with a collar from Wyoming’s Snake River pack. Romatzke says from the evidence, there is only one logical conclusion CPW officials can make. “It is inevitable, based on known wolf behavior, that they would travel here from states where their populations are well-established,” he said. “We have no doubt that they are here, and the most recent sighting of what appears to be wolves traveling together in what can be best described as a pack is further evidence of the presence of wolves in Colorado.” Romatzke adds CPW will continue to operate under the agency's current management direction. “We will not take direct action and we want to remind the public that wolves are federally endangered species and fall under the jurisdiction of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. As wolves move into the state on their own, we will work with our federal partners to manage the species,” he said. The public is urged to contact CPW immediately if they see or hear wolves or find evidence of any wolf activity. The Wolf Sighting Form can be found on the CPW website. For more information about wolves, visit the CPW website.

BLM PLANS PILE BURNS SOUTHEAST OF POWDERHORN

The Bureau of Land Management is preparing to conduct pile burns on Gunnison Field Office lands this winter. The piles are located in Saguache County 13 miles southeast of Powderhorn, CO, near Cathedral. Depending on weather and fuel moisture conditions, these pile burns are tentatively scheduled to occur in January 2020. The operation could occur as late as March 2020. With favorable conditions, this operation is expected to take four days. The objective of the pile burn is to remove the slash left behind from previous hazardous fuels reduction treatments. These treatments remove fuels, reducing the risk of future catastrophic wildfire. Fuels treatments also help create various stages of plant succession, which is critical to the health of fire-adapted ecosystems. As part of this operation, crews will burn approximately 50 machine-built piles consisting of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir. The surrounding fuels are Engelmann spruce, subalpine fir, aspen, and sage. Smoke from the pile burns will be visible throughout the days of the burn, mostly during the warmest part of the day. With cooler temperatures in the evening, smoke may linger and accumulate in low-lying areas. Prescribed fire smoke may affect your health. For more information, please visit the Colorado Air Pollution Control Division’s website: https://www.colorado.gov/pacific/cdphe/wood-smoke-and-health. For additional information, contact Brian Stevens, Fire Management Specialist for the BLM Southwest Colorado Fire and Aviation Management Unit, at (970) 642-4950.
