For his Berlin series Olaf travelled around the capital and chose to photograph seven places of personal, historical and aesthetic value: the Olympic Stadium, the Schöneberg town hall – iconically associated with Kennedy’s famous proclamation “Ich bin ein Berliner” - Clärchens Ballhaus, a classic 100-year old Berlin ballroom, the old city hall in the former heart of Berlin, a public bath house in Neukölln, a fencing hall in Westend and the interior of a Freemasons lodge. With his painterly style of photography, Erwin Olaf also references New Objectivity, an era recognised through the paintings of Otto Dix or George Grosz. The photographs with their perfectly composed atmospheric moods lead us into a bygone Berlin. We find ourselves in the 1920’s of Franz Bieberkopf’s sinister, violent and steadily growing metropolis. From this historically inspired viewpoint, Olaf gazes into the Berlin of today – known internationally as an unconventional, creative, young and free-spirited city.

As in all his photographs, Erwin Olaf works purposefully and precisely with light and skilfully masters the colour spectrum. Nonetheless, the dark and cool precision of Olaf’s photographs is irritating. Children on the edge of adulthood confront the viewer with domineering confidence. For Olaf, these children have more power over their world than the children of over a decade ago. In other roles, old women display the last of their appeal and in doing so, cannot hide their old age. Subliminally, these photographs unleash in us the feelings of a mounting, uncontrollable and sprawling power.

Succinct simulations of realities and intuitively built scenes allow for the remarkable tension in Erwin Olaf’s imagery, which is bound to leave the viewer with as much discomfort as voyeurism.

Snow still held the country in its veil, creating a big white void. This has a way of cleaning up the landscape, the scenery gets more graphic.

This project started in March 2011. Travelling through Iceland for four months, a country I was unfamiliar with. The light was bright, colours were vivid and by the end of my trip the sun kept on shining all night long.
