“Oh, Espresso Royale, truly the most noble of coffee venues, you continue to awe us. Situated firmly at a locus central to our travel on campus, your symbol is a shining beacon of hope for the downtrodden and numb, those who seek only a caffeine injection to propel them through one more panic-ridden day of study.”

So hot, it’s cool... I think it’s got the best coffee in town - I’ve tried all the others,” he said, enjoying a small cappuccino and a bagel on a recent afternoon. “And I’ve been coming here since they opened.” Beck was seated at one of the cafe’s several round tables, one with a good view of the counter and of the customers - bundled up for a cold December and seeking the kind of warmth that comes in a cup - parading in. “It’s a comfortable place,” added Beck. “I know a lot of the people here and it’s fun to see them.” At this Espresso Royale, first impressions can be misleading. The foyer is shared by a karate school, and if visitors don’t look beyond the service counter they won’t know that just past the display cases of scones and muffins, beyond the menu of coffees and teas, and just past the wooshing cappuccino machine, the room gives way to a large and comfortable seating area with high ceilings, white columns and comfortable armchairs. Artwork hangs on the walls, adding a homey feel. All that’s missing is a fireplace. Since the cafe has wireless Internet (well, who doesn’t these days, right?) laptop users abound, quietly pecking away at their machines. Three iMacs (two blue and one raspberry flavor) with businesslike chairs are gathered in one spot for those who arrive without their hardware.

Some like it hot. sometimes it’s nice over ice.

“It’s not the only coffee shop I go to,” he said, “but it’s very conducive to tuning the world out and focusing on your work. It’s got the right level of white noise.” Although no one mentioned Espresso Royale’s biggest competitor, the mega-chain beanery a block up the street, it was clear Beck was pleased to be supporting the homegrown edition. “The idea that it is a locally owned company appeals to me. Generally I am a booster, I guess,” said Beck, who is also part of a group of motorcycle enthusiasts who gather here every Saturday morning. “We can push a couple of tables together for a couple of hours and B.S.” If those bikers wanted to stay the whole day, they could enjoy the free live acoustic music the cafe offers on Saturday nights. It’s so popular, in fact, “I’m looking to start and open mic or poetry slams on other nights,” said manager Kirst, who seems to always have a grin poking through his unruly beard. “I’ve been in a lot of coffee houses ... this place has a history. This was the first cafe at all downtown. It’s not really set up like a typical cafe or restaurant. It’s set up like a living room.” Understandably, he’s proud of Espresso Royale’s coffees and teas. But he said one of the cafe’s primo offerings these days is the Chocolate Cacao Royale, which includes dark chocolate, vanilla, powdered sugar, whipped cream and cayenne pepper. “The cayenne gives it a kick - it’s been a fantastic hit,” he said. Otherwise, he added, “we have really great food and I want people to know about that. “

ER also has the seal of approval of vegans. The Web site www. vegguide.org calls Espresso Royale “a great vegan friendly cafe ... They have a variety of vegan pastries, hummus wraps, and even soy hot chocolate.” Veteran barista Amanda Bullock had a simple explanation for the cafe’s popularity.

“(The owners) are committed to European-style coffee. If you like cappuccino or espresso, this is where you want to go,” she said.
