It is with immense pleasure, I would like to  write few words on the services rendered by  the  Welfare  Desk  of  M&E  ADH  Division.    I  just  remember  the  idea  shared  by  Mr.  V.  Sivapal  about  the  formation  of  Welfare  Desk and a cultural team immediately after his new assignment   to  lead  the  HR  &  Admin  Dept  of  the  Division.    I  appreciate  his  different vision and very happy to note that the Welfare Team is  grown from a meager member of 6 to over a 50 members now.   By  this  time,  they  had  staged  many  programs  and  I  was  fortu‐ nate to enjoy the amazing talents of our Workmen in few occa‐ sions.  I was really thrilled and thoroughly enjoyed the perform‐ ance  of  our  Workmen.    I  congratulate  the  entire  Welfare  team  for their hard work and bringing the hidden talents of our Work‐ men to the notice of the Management.  It is out of the place to  mention    the  strain  and  dedication  taken  by  Mr.  V.  Sivapal  to  strengthen the Welfare Desk with only one Executive – Mr. Sou‐ kat Bhattacharjee.  His support is equally remembered through‐ out  this    journey.    Welfare  Desk  has  come    out  with  many  ser‐ vices  viz.  orientation  for  the  New  Workmen,  mass  counseling,  free medical checkups etc.   The formation of “Grievances Cell” is  another  milestone  of  Welfare  team,  where  the  Workmen  can  just walk and register their problem for immediate action.  I am  proud to know that many unresolved cases were settled since its  inception  of  4  months  back.  I  wish  all  the  best  to  the  Welfare  team,  and  I  am  sure  Mr.  V.  Sivapal  and  his  team  can  innovate  many more creations in this ongoing journey.       Manoj K Dhoot  Director

My  first  interaction  with  the  welfare  desk was more than a year back when I was  organizing  a  gathering  over  a  dinner  for  about 80 staff. I was on the lookout for some  light  entertainment  to  keep  our  staff  enter‐ tained and this was when I was suggested by  Mr. Sivapal about our Labour Welfare Desk & their capability  to  stage  an  entertainment  programme  involving  raw  in‐ house talent of our workmen.   All of us in the gathering were truly amazed by the wealth of  talent  exhibited  on  that  night,  starting  from  the  way  our  Labour  Welfare  Executive  Mr.  Soukat  Bhattacherjee  com‐ peered the show to the variety entertainment that our work‐ men  staged  consisting  of  individual  /  group  performances,  classical / folk / Bollywood / western songs & dances, etc etc ‐  all  done  passionately  in  colorful  costumes  with  a  touch  of  humbleness.   Since then, we have engaged these in‐house entertainers on  even  larger  presentation  forums  of  our  company  and  were  amazed by the variety they had on offer, when on stage. This  is  an  innovative  way  to  tap  these  hidden  talents  and  their  participation  in  such  shows  must  be  encouraged  to  give  them a platform to exhibit their many talents.  I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the en‐ tire  Welfare  Team  for  this  talent  desk  and  for  the  quarterly  news letter publications. I’m sure that this will go a long way  to keep our ETA family entertained, for the years to come.    K Jacob John

The issue of mental ill health is still being swept under the carpet in  most workplaces, with just four in ten employees saying they would  feel  confident  to  disclose  a  mental  health  problem  to  their  em‐ ployer. A  survey of 2,000 people in employment in the UK* reveals  that despite more than a quarter (26%) of employees having experi‐ enced a mental health problem while in employment, too few em‐ ployers  are  taking  positive  steps  to  manage  this  increasingly  busi‐ ness  critical  issue.  Just  25%  of  respondents  say  their  organization  encourages staff to talk  openly about  mental health problems and  only  37%  say  their  employer  supports  employees  with  mental  health problems well.   Managers are the eyes and ears of organizations. They need to be  equipped  with  the  knowledge  and  confidence  to  enable  them  to  pick up on the early warning signs and intervene where employees  are struggling. Mental ill health is usually caused by a complex inter‐ action between pressures at work and at home, so increasing wor‐ ries about debt, home repossession and job insecurity, as the econ‐ omy  continues  to  remain  depressed,  may  well  lead  to  a  surge  in  mental  ill  health.  Managers  need  to  foster  an  environment  where  staff can feel comfortable to disclose a mental health problem, and  simple information to support their employees through any period  of mental ill health to help their recovery.

cleanliness  regulations  and  imposing  spot  fines  of  up  to  Dh500  for  spitting,  throwing  cigarette  butts  or  dropping  chewing  gum  on the streets in the Capital .The fine will be Dh100 for spitting  on  the  streets,  Dh500  for  dropping  chewing  gum,  Dh200  for  throwing cigarette butts and throwing waste on the streets.  The campaign intends to maintain the cleanliness of the city and  refrain people from continuing with the bad habits like throwing  waste  in  the  wrong  place,  and  dropping  cigarette  butts  and  chewing gum on the roads, sidewalks as well as spitting on the  streets and roads   Launching such campaigns was part of the municipality’s strat‐ egy to maintain the cultural and aesthetic look of the cities,  streets and public utilities as well as  harnessing the technical  and material potential to maintain a high standard of public  hygiene.  P E N A L T I E S   A S   P E R   L I S T       1.        Dh100 for spitting on the streets  2.        Dh200 for throwing cigarette butts on the streets  3.        Dh500 for dropping chewing gums on the streets  4.        Dh500 for throwing waste on the streets
