How Is Monazite Mined In India
The Monazite content in the Beach sands of the Gulf of Mannar is very low. It might contain Thorium from 7.0- 8.5%. However no private companies that conduct beach Mineral sand mining activity like Ilmenite mining, is permitted to recover the Monazite. Also, the percentage of monazite is very low in the ROM. In addition to that, mining of monazite is very hazardous because of the radiation hazards it may produce.
Only government agencies like IERL are actively involved in the mining of monazite in India. The AERB makes an Annual inspection of all the facilities, mines & refilled pits. They carry out the following – [i] Measuring the % of Monazite in the ROM; products & waste tailings. [ii] Monitoring the Air quality& radiation levels in the processing units; stockpile Mine sites & refilled pits. [iii] Waste disposal / silica tailings records. [iv] Dose calculation records. [v] Monitoring the instruments calibration & maintenance records. Private companies only indulge in heavy mineral mining of heavy minerals. One of the premier companies that indulge in heavy mineral mining of Garnet is V.V. Mineral. They are India’s biggest mining, manufacturers and exporters of Garnet. They have been
awarded as the ‘Number One Garnet Exporters’ of our country. They also undertake Zircon mining, Rutile mining and Ilmenite mining. It is family grown business started by Mr. S Vaikundarajan, Chairman of VV Group of companies.
