digital city Times Square NYC Times Square is a digital city comprised of simultaneous networks of restaurants, transportation, real estate, commerce, and theatres. Its networks are convoluted but highly systematic.

The Times Square Alliance, in charge of the Theater Dstrict and past the borders of 7th Ave and Broadway between 42nd and 48th St, organizes all activities and events in the area to provide the ultimate tourist attraction.

Most interesting about these studies is effect of the large digital billboards that line the streets of the bow tie plaza. They bceome the boundaries of the site, and although play the large role in advertising, define the Crossroads of the World.

Due to the high circulation of pedestrians, vehicles, food carts, and bike riders, traffic must be maintained by temporary and permanent boundaries that re-inforce lanes and walking paths. In addition, some boundaries meant to disperse pedestrian traffic are re-purposed as seating for the visitors.

APRIL 8, 1904

Longacre Square was renamed Times Square when New York Times publisher Adolph S. Ochs moved the newpaper’s location to a skyscraper on 42nd Street and urged the construction of a subway station nearby.

vacant storefronts Collaborative Research Week One_08.31 Pratt has a Certificate Program in GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and Design, SAVI (Spatial Analysis and Visualization Initiative), that emphasizes the use of geographic data to drive design in solving real-world issues.

LOOKING WEST

In addition to learning more about SAVI, we will potentially work with Topos Chief Data Specialist, Will Shapiro. What information is available for the public? How accessible is it? How is this information presented? Could we extract the information easily or will we need to search databases? What are mapping indicators when researching?

14

TH

5T

Until we meet with everyone to discuss possibilities, we will be investigating methods for visually mapping data.
