Saga of the Marblehead The Navy Writes Another Epic They've got a job to do, and they know it, and they know how to do it, and they're going to do it to the best of their ability and a little bit beyond, everywhere, every time. If a little glory creeps into the doing of it, that's incidental, and they don't want people blathering about it afterward. That is, for themselves they don't. They're Navy, and if there's any glory attached to their job, they figure it's the Navy's glory. Only they don't call it glory, they call it tradition. Not right away, usually. Navy men on every sea are living up to Navy tradition, and adding to it, all the time, and most of the time it's a long while before what they do is fitted into its proper place, and written down for future plebes to learn. Maybe it never gets written down, because Navy tradition is so big that it swallows up individual acts of bravery, and steadfastness, and professional skill, like a whale swallows a school of minnows. But you can't argue that a thing isn't Navy tradition because it didn't happen so-and-so many years ago. You couldn't say, for instance, that Dewey wasn't a part of Navy tradition the day after the Battle Navy men don't like glory-words.

For she lives to fight again!"

of Manila Bay. Or that Perry wasn't a part of Navy tradition until so-and-so many years after the Battle of Lake Erie.

Or that John Paul Jones didn't become a part of Navy tradition until the year eighteen hundred and so-and-so. Once in a while a thing comes along that you don't have to think about to decide whether it's Navy tradition, or will be.

It just is. The story of the Marblehead is one of those things.

Navy men don't like glory-words. But when you're talking about Navy tradition, you can't take away the glory by any choice of words, though sometimes you'd think the Navy, and Navy men, were trying to do just that, the way they talk, particularly if it's a Navy man talking about himself. So here's the story of the Marblehead in the Navy Department's own words, and some of the words of the Marblehead's skipper, with now and then just a paragraph or so about something the Department didn't say, in so many words, but which stands out just the same.

"When the war broke out, the Marblehead and several United States de-

stroyers were at Tarakan, a port in northeast Borneo. The Marblehead forged into action immediately, and for the first months of the war was engaged in covering the evacuation of United Nations shipping from the Philippines to the Southward. More than fifty Merchant ships were evacuated in these operations without a loss."

Fifty ships saved. Just routine. Doing a job. You wouldn't have heard about that at all, if it hadn't been for what happened later on.

"As the Japanese bore down on the Dutch East Indies, a United States striking force consisting of cruisers and destroyers made several attempts to intercept the enemy and halt the advance.

Twice the Japanese command of the air frustrated such efforts, but finally, on January 24, an enemy convoy was caught edging Southward through Macassar Straits. The convoy was heavily punished in successive attacks by United States and Dutch submarines and aircraft, and a United States naval force consisting of four destroyers, the John D. Ford, Parrott, Pope, and Paul Jones. The night of January 24, the United States Destroyers named above plowed up and down the Straits pumping torpedoes and shells into the massed Jap ships. This attack resulted in a bag by the United States Destroyers of at least four large transports dam aged. The Marblehead, while not actually participating in the battle, had a share in it, that backed up and covered the Destroyer^ entry into the Straits and then their getaway."

"On February 4, this combined force was standing by to ambush the Japanese Armada when it was attacked by a large flight of Japanese planes. At least 54 aircraft participated in the attack.

"One of the Japanese planes was hit by anti-aircraft fire from the Houston.

As this plane fell, its pilot attempted a suicide dive on the Marblehead, but the cruiser's gunners poured fire on the falling plan€ and completed its destruction with hits that sent it crashing into the sea about thirty feet from their ship."

Thirty feet is about ten steps. Not very far. This Jap knew he was going to die, and wanted to die on the deck of the Marblehead. It wouldn't be enough to hit him. That plane had to be knocked out of the sky. Maybe those gunners on the Marblehead weren't the best in the world, but they must have been pretty good.

How much time? Maybe thirty seconds, maybe forty. A plane covers a lot of ground at two hundred and fifty miles an hour. But they got him. Of course.

That's what they were expected to do.

And it's a good bet they didn't stop to wonder whether they could do it. "They just did it.

other hit, then a near miss that ripped the seams below the water line. We were badly flooded, two fires were going and the main deck was covered with fuel oil and water, debris and wreckage.

The sick bay was demolished and we had to improvise a new one."

No wounded in the sick bay when the bomb struck, though. The ship's surgeon had had a Navy hunch a few minutes earlier and removed them. There wasn't much logic in what he did, said the Skipper, but the results were O.K." Fifteen men were killed and twenty more wounded during the bombing. The projected attack on the Japanese had to be abandoned, and the Marblehead and her destroyers proceeded to Tjilatjap on the soiith coast of Java.

That's all. They abandoned the attack and proceeded to Tjilatjap. With her rudder out of action and the seas surging through her twisted bow. Through a reef-studded strait in darkness and rain.

With a crying need for speed, because the bombers probably would be back at daybreak. But forced to go almost dead slow because even that much movement was pushing tons of water through the opened seams. With all pumps going, and all of the crew who could be spared for the job bailing by hand. (They bailed for forty-eight solid hours. How many people ashore ever did anything for forty-eight hours at a stretch?) Steering by her engines. Tickled first with the star board propeller, then with the port.

"On February 7, the Marblehead^ limped into Tjilatjap. The dock was too small to accommodate the entire ship, so only the bow and a portion of the amidships section could be worked upon.

Sufficient temporary repairs were accomplished to ermble the Marblehead to proceed to a British base on the Island of Ceylon. The rudder still could not be used on this portion of the homeward trip."

So she "limped into Tjilatjap." And on the way put out two fires. And kept the bucket-brigade going to keep her from swamping. And dodged Jap scouting planes as well as she could. And the Skipper spent 60 hours on the bridge without relief. (Try just staying awake that long!) And then they got her into dry-dock at Tjilatjap. As easy as that.

A tiny floating drydock that would barely lift her nose enough to let welded patches be placed over her gaping holes.

"Every time the tide changed, we thought she'd slip out," the skipper recalled.

"Soon as she left drydock she filled up again, but the pumps were able to take care of her." So she went on to Ceylon.

Still unable to use her rudder. But everything was soft and easy now, by comparison with what she'd been through already. Sure, soft and easy.

"Further repairs were made at Ceylon, putting the Marblehead in condition to make a 4,400-mile trip to the southern coast of Africa. There, still further repairs were made and the Marblehead was able to proceed to an Fast coast port of the United States."

That tells it in forty-five words. Two sentences. One short paragraph. About eleven thousand miles. Just routine. The Marblehead was built to sail the seas, all of them, and across them. What if she had been hit a few times? Patch her up a bit, and she could go back to doing her job. Her routine job.

She's in home port now, being repaired and refitted so she can go back again to that job. And the Navy Department has stretched one of its strictest rules a little, so that the names of some of her oSicers and men can be mentioned. Not all of them, of course. Nor even all the heroes. Just some of them. "Nothing has impressed me so much," said the Marblehead's skipper, "as the continued cheerfulness of this crew. They were called upon to work day and night. They worked, ate, and—when they could find a place to lie down, and time, they slept —in their oil-soaked clothing. There was neither time nor fresh water for bathing.

There were numerous acts of individual heroism which contributed much to the rescue of the wounded and the saving of the ship. Some of the men who performed these acts are known. The identity of others has never been determined.

The people of this country can well be as proud as I am of the courage and accomplishments of the Marblehead's crew."

Proud? Sure, they're proud. Skipper.

But not the same way you are. Theirs is a good pride, a fine pride, and a useful pride, too, because it's helping the men in the shops and the factories to work a little harder and produce a little more to help win this war we're fighting. But it isn't the pride of a Navy man in the Navy crew of a Navy ship. That isn't their fault. You see, it takes a Navy man to understand that kind of pride. There's so much more to it than just glory. The man in the street can call the story of the Marblehead a saga. It's all of that. Or

maybe an epic. It's that, too. But to a Navy man it's more than either a saga or an epic. It's Navy tradition.

The names the department released?

Oh, yes. There's the skipper, of course.

Arthur G. Robinson, '13, Captain, U. S. N. Born in Brooklyn, now lives in Washington, D. C, when he's ashore.

And William B. (Bill) Goggins, '20, Comdr., U. S. N., who was Executive officer. He suffered severe and painful burns, and was relieved of duty, but kept coming up to the bridge, begging for something to do, until the Skipper had to order him below.

And Nicholas B. (Nick) Van Bergen, '21, Lt. Comdr., U. S. N., who took over after Bill Goggins was wounded. "He was a tower of strength," said the skipper.

And Martin J. Drury, '25, Lt. Comdr., U. S. N., the Damage Control officer, who freed the jammed rudder and brought the fires under control.

And Hepburn A. Pearce, '31, Lieutenant, U. S. N., who took charge of a repair party and aided in checking the

spread of the fires.

And Francis G. Blasdel, '37, Lt. (jg), U. S. N., who entered burning areas to find out what repairs were necessary.

And Lieutenant Commander Frank R. Wildebusch, the ship's surgeon, whose "hunch" saved the lives of the wounded in his care.

And Harvey M. Anderson, Chief Boatswain; Elliott P. Annis, Machinist; Herman E. Hock, Chief Boatswain's Mate; Frederick H. Ritter, Chief Electrician's Mate: Hale T. McCully, Chief Shipfitter; Paul P. Martinek, Turret Captain; Dale L. Johnson, Machinist's Mate; Matin Moran, Metalsmith; Lester J. Barre, Quartermaster, 2nd class; Claude Becker, Seaman, 1st class; and Fock Liang, the Chinese cook, who without being told, stepped forward to act as nurse.

That's a pretty good bunch of names.

Robinson, Goggins, Van Bergen, Drury, Pearce, Blasdel, Wildebusch, Anderson, Annis, Hock, Ritter, McCully, Martinek, Johnson, Moran, Barre, Becker, Liang.

All good Americans. And all Navy. Officers and men of the Marblehead. '

Remember Pearl Harbor!

Aye! But—do not forget.

There's much to be done since the task has been set; No Victory is won by a Government's gold.

By Capital, Labor, by Youth or the Old; No miracle happens, it's work, plain hard work.

But, all work together, not anyone shirk; A COUNTRY, united, all hearts beat as one, Ideals of the highest, a Goal to be won; A COUNTRY of disciplined hearts with a will.

services on his expedition to Japan, but in 1857 he again was appointed to the Academy where he stayed until 1861, serving eleven years at the school altogether.

Very little is known about the first Chapel of the Naval School, although divine services were attended by the midshipmen. A Journal of the Day mentions that the cadets attended services on Sundays at 10 A.M. but mention is not made of the location of the Chapel. The "Senate Documents" for 1850-51 has a map of the grounds of the Academy when a Chapel is shown at a location similar with that of the present day site of the Mexican Monument, located just a short distance from the old sea wall along the Severn River.

peake Bay. She went into commission on May 15, so it was impossible to get a crew and she was ordered out of commission about June 1. This delighted the three classes of cadets left at the Academy.

They at once proceeded to use every means to get orders to the war. The result was that the whole battalion of cadets, excepting a few, was in the Spanish American War." On May 24, 1868, a handsome new Chapel was occupied and used for public worship for the first time. An appropriation of $25,000 had been made in July, 1866, for the Chapel, based on the request of the Superintendent, Vice Admiral David D. Porter, and a letter by Chaplain George W. Smith, to the Navy Department. Upon occupation of the new Chapel, which was located just to the rear of the present Superintendent's House, the old Chapel was used as a gunnery room.

In 1904 the Chapel was torn down immediately after the Lenten season, with Divine worship held in the old armory which was "of rough and forbidding interior but it's acoustics were perfect." In June of the same year. Admiral George Dewey laid the first trowel of mortar when the corner stone was placed.

When Secretary of the Navy Moody made a speech at the laying, he said: "Commander Buchanan in 1845 said that the Navy only had 76 ships. In 1904 we have 276 ships . . . In those days the annual appropriation for maintenance of a Navy was six million dollars . . . the appropriation which will go out next month

will exceed $98,000,000. Midshipmen then were appointed by chance, caprice or through favoritism while a law is now passed for appointments by law according to the population throughout the States . . ."

On May 24,1908, the $400,000 Chapel was dedicated with Chaplain Clark in charge of worship. Prof. Charles A. Zimmerman, Bandleader and author of the immortal "Anchors Aweigh" played the new organ. Captain Charles J. Badger was Superintendent. In January 1913, the sarcophagus containing John Paul Jones was transferred from Memorial Hall to the chapel, with appropriate services.

In 1925, a memorial to eight comrades who had died since the class entered in 1921, was presented to the Chapel. Included was a set of National and Regimental colors and bronze tablets which bore the names of those deceased.

A dossal of blue and gold damask was suspended from the carved scroll which extends across the base of the Porter Window, supported by a cherry wood column to match the altar.

The $7500 class window, "The Commission Invisible," was presented by the 1927 class, which has for it's subject a figure of a young graduate in white ensign's tmiform, holding his commission in his hands.

The rapidly growing regiment of midshipmen brought about the necessity of enlarging the ChapeL, with work started in January, 1939- Dedication services were held on April 28, 1940. Chaplain WilUam N . Thomas read scripmres from a prayerbook belonging to Admiral D. G. Farragut that was a gift to the Chapel by the Rev. Charles B. Carpenter of Brookfield, Coim. at Sunday services held on January 23, 1938. Many psalms were underscored by Farragut, that he had read while on sea duty. Chaplain Thomas read the same psalms during his service.

Rear Admiral Wilson Brown was superintendent.

At a cost of $400,000 the present Chapel now seats 2600 persons. Upon entering the Chapel through the same old bronze doors, a nave stretches 216 feet to the altar, giving the impression of great space while the tall windows with proportionate balconies lends height to the blue and gold sanctuary. Back of the altar is the Porter Window. On either side of the chancel is the organ, while the transepts with the stained glass Farragut and Sampson windows stand out like the arms of a cross. Here, too, is the beloved midshipman window, the 1927 class gift. The pews are covered with

blue velvet while the balcony railing is painted gold.

Upon the Chapel's golden dome is the gift of the class of 1931—a set of chimes that may be heard from a radius of two miles. WTien the December graduating class left Dahlgren Hall upon receiving their commissions from Secretary of the Navy Knox, "Navy Blue and Gold" was heard upon the cold, Christmasy air.

WTien the Regiment marches to divine worship on Sundays, members of the Naval Academy band plays "Onward Christian Soldiers." The choir is composed entirely of midshipmen. The best loved hymn is "Eternal Father Strong to Save." It is of interest to note that Admiral C. R. Train, then a young instructor in Navigation at the Academy, is the originator of the singing of the hymn.

In 1879, young Train took over the midshipmen choir that previously had been in the hands of a midshipman leader.

These facts were learned in a letter to Superintendent David F. Sellers, written

by Admiral Train.

Midshipmen have the privilege of attending services in Annapolis churches or the chapel, but 69 per cent choose the latter. Sermons are prepared to include all Christian faiths; denominational lines are not drawn. Those of the Catholic church attend mass on week days also, but 86 per cent of the Regiment is of Protestant faith. Each midshipman works actively in the Naval Academy Christian Association or is a member of the Newman Association—a Catholic group of 400 members. Midshipmen act as Sunday school teachers for ofiScer's and instructor's children, with the Sunday school rooms located on the first level where John Paul Jones' crypt, the chaplain's office and St. Andrew's chapel are situated.

Services are held on Sundays on the station ships, the REINA-MERCEDES and the CUMBERLAND, with the Assistant Chaplain, Lieut. P. W. J. Dickman in charge.

It is in the Chapel that members of navy families come from great distances to be married. Or to baptize their children. Or to hold services for their dead.

During the ten years Chaplain Thomas has served at the Academy he has married over 300 couples, baptized 500 children and read services at as many funerals. From N o v 1, 1852 to Oct. V, 1857— a period of four years and eleven months at the Academy, Chaplain Bartow served at eight funerals and nine baptisms.

One of the earliest marriages mentioned in the Chaplain's Journal is of

Nov. 3, 1861, when Chaplin Junkin wrote: "I solemnized marriage between Mr. John Glen, Master at Arms on the CONSTITUTION and Miss Elizabeth Sullivan of New York."

When the Navy Department recently lifted the two-year after graduation ban on weddings. Chaplain Thomas' telephone commenced ringing constantly.

On graduation day—^June 19—and the two following days, one-sixth of the Class of 1943, or 100 midshipmen, have already made plans to wed. Of this number twenty-five will be married in the chapel; innumerable couples were turned away because there was no time left. Weddings will be held every hour until 7:30 P.M. A recent "Gallop Poll" held by the Graduation Class showed 179 members will be married within a week after graduation.

The first couple to be married following graduation will be Regimental Commander Willis E. Maxson and Miss Mary Waltmon of Austin,_ Texas. The ceremony will be held at 2:30 P.M. with Chaplain Thomas ofl&ciating. The first couple to be married in the chapel following the baneful ban raising was Ensign Garrison Brown, U.S.N. and Miss Francis Geraldine Boyer, who flew from the West Coast to be married by Chaplain Thomas.

Chaplain Thomas is an excellent representative of the twenty Chaplains who have served before him at the Academy Chapel. He is not Navy born, and did not hear the rattle of anchor chains until the first World War, when he applied for service because he felt called upon to do something. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Thomas of Crystal Springs, Miss. After graduating from Millsap College he married Miss Ellen Fondren and settled down as Pastor of the Methodist Church in the small town of Summit, Miss. There are two sons, William N., Jr., who is a Medical student at the University of Virginia, and John who is in grade school.

Upon the outbreak of the war he wrote the Bishop of his church, saying that he would like to enter either the Army or Navy—knowing little about either. At that time the Navy needed Chaplains so he went to sea. Throughout the war he crossed back and forth on Transports with the boys; at the conclusion of the fracus he returned with them, crossing several times. He stayed in the Service during the brief lull of peacetime. He is with them now, and will be with them to the end.

Just a few more weeks now, and academic year will be over. Exam week will end on Friday, June 12, and June Week will begin on Saturday, June 13. The program for that week has not been announced yet, but we do know that there will be the usual full dress parades and hops, and of course, the graduation of the class of '43 on Friday, June 19- Summer leave for the class of '44 and onethird of the class of '45 will begin on Saturday, June 20. The midshipmen are being granted twenty-eight days of leave this year. When the new first classmen return from leave, they will haye an aviation p-work for one week and academics for the rest of the summer. The new third classmen will also have a week of aviation during the summer term, but they will have only five weeks of academic work in order that they may spend four weeks cruising on the Chesapeake Bay in the Academy's YP's, subchasers, and ketches.

The Executive Department has asked for volunteers from the present third class to give up half of their leave to be skippers of the ships in the training squadron during the first cruise. For the second and third cruises, the skippers will be chosen from the first classmen who stand high in academic subjects, all of whom will be back from leave at that time. Each ship in the training squadron will have one first classman aboard as Captain, about twelve third classmen, and an enlisted man. The cooks will be chosen from the third class crew. Cooking seemed to be quite popular on the Chesapeake Bay cruises last year among the third classmen who wanted to get out of standing watches. These cruises are especially adapted to teach the Youngsters to become proficient in the use of signals. Competition between the ships in each division is held each day, and the crew of the ship which wins in the flag hoist drill each day gets an extra hour of liberty as a reward. The men also learn quite a bit of seamanship, and get more practice in navigation and tactical exercises than they would get on a battleship, where they would not be carrying out

each maneuver themselves. Rear Admiral Russell Willson, former superintendent of the Naval Academy, referred to these men as the "salty sailors of the Chesapeake." However, the men who make the YP cruise will be deprived of the gunnery practice, the instruction in naval machinery, the routine life aboard a capital ship, and the visits to the foreign ports connected with the past summer practice cruises.

It is not uncommon to see members of the first class strolling around Washington and Baltimore on Saturdays these days. They are granted liberty to visit those cities from after noon meal formation each Saturday until 2400 that evening. Tliere have been so many men taking advantage of this new privilege that the transportation companies have asked each battalion to furnish a list of the men who plan to travel by bus or train each week-end, so that adequate transportation facilities will be available. The third class has also received some new privileges; they have second class rates now.

They can go out in town on Wednesday afternoons; they can drag guests in sailboats; they no longer have to turn in dining out requests for Saturday evening liberty; and they have ten more minutes to say goodnight to their drags after the expiration of hops.

We were scheduled to change into white uniforms on May 4, but all of the fourth classmen have not obtained their white service uniforms yet. However, they expect to have them by June 1. We understand that the class of '46 will not receive full dress uniforms next year.

Consequently, this will be the last year that full dress uniforms will be worn until the war is over. Unfortunately, the class of '45 is getting the short end of the deal, for they will get only one year's wear out of their full dress uniforms after having paid so much for them. The present first classmen have been authorized to turn in their rainclothes when they graduate, because the Midshipmen's Store has announced that they will not be able to obtain any rainclothes for next year. The store has a regular salvage sec-

tion these days, and they are collecting any articles which may be used by incoming plebe classes.

A couple of weeks ago, the president of Peru, Manuel Prado, was entertained

by Admiral Beardall. During his visit here, the regiment gave a full dress parade in his honor. The midshipmen stood at "present arms" while the band played the Peruvian National Anthem, which was followed immediately by a twentyone gun salute. From the poll that we have taken, we found that only one midshipman passed out under the hot rays of the sun. Just wait until the June Week p-rades. Then the sun will get 'em.

On May 5, five hundred and seventyseven reserve midshipmen received their commissions as Ensigns. Some of these men will go to specialized schools for further instruction, and the others will go to the fleet. The regiment of midshipmen enjoyed their short stay, and we feel that they enjoyed the indoctrination which they received here. They entered into the spirit of everything, as was shown by their contributions to the Victory Bond Drive. They had a hundred dollars more in their boxes than any of the other battalions. By the way, another group of reserves are expected to enter the Academy at the end of this month.

This month's prize frap goes to a plebe in the fourth battalion. This man thought that he was being quite salty by wearing a stop-line around his waist to hold up his trousers. The officer-of-the-watch caught him in the corridor one day and asked him where he was going. The plebe told him that he was going across the hall to see some of his classmates about a problem. The officer was going to frap him for carrying on in the corridors, but the fourth classman convinced him that he technically rated visiting the particular room to which he was going.

Then the ofi&cer saw the stop-line around the plebe's waist and was stupefied beyond a doubt. An hour later he wrote out a frap which stated, "Clothing, wearing unauthorized. (This midshipman was wearing a stop-line around his waist instead of a belt to hold up his trou.)"

An order was read out in the mess hall the other day announcing that first classmen will no longer be allowed to take fourth classmen to formations. It is a plebe rate to double-time to all formations, you know. Any first classman taking a plebe to formation in the future will receive twenty demerits and confinement for a week-end. BENEATH A HARD SHELL In the summer of 1899 I had my first ofi&cial contact with Captain Eugene H. C. Leutze. At that time the Cavite Navy Yard had to be administered by ofiScers drawn temporarily from the fleet, and when Leutze was assigned as Commandant I was assigned as Captain of the Yard.

Most ofificers whom I knew who had served with Leutze described him as a

"Sundowner" and some even as a "Hellion," but I determined to reserve judgment.

Although a high graduate of the Naval Academy, Leutze was Prussian born and never got over his Teutonic pronunciation and brevity. This made him short and abrupt in manner toward those under him, and his reputation for always seeking arduous and dangerous service held them in awe of him. The saying went that "you can never get anything out of Old Leutze."

The fleet bumboat girl at that time was nicknamed "Sweet Marie." She was very naive, very enterprising and very pretty.

But a bottle of vino was found in her boat by a master at arms and the matter was mrned over to Leutze as she kept her stores in a large cascoe moored to the Cavite sea wall.

Leutze confiscated her boat and had it hauled up on the dock and padlocked to a mooring bollard.

Next morning as I was going to my office Sweet Marie stopped me and told me her tale of woe: she never smuggled vino; she didn't know the bottle was in the boat; some sailor on shore must have hid it there; she had an old mother to support and now her business was ruined.

Wouldn't I please, please explain to the Commandant and get her boat released.

As she talked Leutze was across the street in one of his characteristic poses, arms folded and right hand patting his left elbow, talking to an officer from one of the ships. His back was partly mrned to us and although within earshot he did not seem to see or hear us.

I promised Marie I would do my best and thought I could get her boat released, and she went on her way.

I crossed over to the Commandant as the other officer departed but before I could say a word he turned to me with a grim smile and said: "No you don't! I vill not give her the boat."

Then he went on into his office.

About three days later, however, he came into my office and laid a padlock key on my desk.

"De key of Sweet Marie's boat," he said.

"Then I can give it to her?" I asked.

"You ask too many questions," he replied. "Vy do I give it to you?"

Then he turned and walked away.

GRAY, '17, who is back on active duty at Seattle, received credit for a letter in November SHIPMATE, which he did not write and which is quoted as follows: ""Retiring physically in '27, when our training did not seem to be much needed, was satisfactory to me. Now, however, with Sea Power being back in number one place again, where it always belonged, I would give a good deal to be back on the Bridge in a strong breeze with the spray in my face. No such luck for me.

The District Medico will not grant me a waiver on my hearing even for shore duty. So here I am hunting and fishing and enjoying life, when in my heart I have but one desire:—To be out there with my classmates and shipmates living up to the Creed of our Navy. It would not be so bad if I had not been a destroyer man, with the ship vibrating from the power of the turbines; the heart beating a little faster; the mind a little keener; the eyes a little sharper; no room for fear; no such emotion do I ever remember of encountering in the Navy; just Action!

Action! Oh, well—my boy, just 16, hopes that he might make it in another year or so."

Jack writes after reading said SHIPMATE, "But how you happened to wish that article on me I do not know. '"And further being a bachelor and never having been married, I am wondering just what—"my boy, just 16, hopes that he might make it in another year or so.'"

"If my memory is correct you are the England who played center on the Alexandria High School football team with the famous O'Brien brothers, and who took this part of the country by storm in the 1920's. I remember the team well since I saw them give my school, Fargo High, a terrific drubbing.

For example: Roy Smith's and Jim Weldon's letters arrived April 15 th, they were submitted May 1st, and appear in the June issue which reached you anywhere between June 5 th and Did someone say "Better Late Than Never?"

"I knew Art well and he was a fine person.

"10. As for the suggestion about the class fimds—by all means buy the bonds.

From "Huff" Clark we hear that Peggy Stone, wife of Lester Stone, is living in Annapolis "for the duration." She just recently remrned from Honolulu.

The Stones, along with other Navy families, were living in Pearl City, very close to the Fleet Anchorage, when the Japs bombed Pearl Harbor.

• EDWARD H. O'HARE, '37, on AprU 21 at the White House was presented with the Congressional Medal of Honor and promoted to the rank of lieutenant commander.

In presenting the medal, the President said: "The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Congressional Medal of Honor to Lt. Edward H. O'Hare, United States Navy, for service as set forth in the following citation: " 'For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in aerial combat, at great risk of his life beyond and above the call of duty, as section leader and pilot of fighting squadron 3, when on February 20, 1942, having lost the assistance of his teammates, he interposed his plane between his ship and an advancing enemy formation of nine attacking twin-engined heavy bombers. Without hesitation, alone and unaided, he repeatedly attacked this enemy at close range in the face of their intense combined machine gun and cannon fire, and despite this concentrated opposition, he, by his gallant and courageous action, his extremely skillful marksmanship, making the most of every shot of his limited amount of ammunition, shot down five enemy bombers and severely damaged a sixth before they reached the bomb-release point. " 'As a result of his gaUant action, one of the most daring, if not the most daring single action in the history of combat aviation, he undoubtedly saved his carrier from serious damage.' Spring Sport Teams Click Despite the loss of many seasoned players through the early, graduations, the Naval Academy varsity sport teams have made a fine record during the spring season and face the annual Army contests with confidence.

The basebaU team has won nine in a row and has a season record of 13 wins and 3 losses. The middies dropped games to Harvard and Pennsylvania and a practice match to the Baltimore Orioles.

The golf team was going fine, winning four, until May 9 when it was mrned back by Virginia in a hard match. The same was true of the lacrosse team which chalked up seven straight wins only to fall before the national championship headed Princeton ten.

Navy's crew, which apparently faced a poor season, has been the surprise of the East, mrning back Princeton, Columbia and CorneU in succession.

The tennis team is undefeated in 10 starts.

Navy's track team recently defeated Duke, Southern Conference champions.

Comdr. L. S. Perry, graduate manager of athletics, announced that Navy's three home football games, William and Mary, Virginia, and Georgia Tech would be thrown open to the public, under certain restrictions. Navy will meet Yale and Columbia in the Baltimore Stadium, Yale on Oct. 17 and Columbia on Nov. 14.

Other Navy games are Oct. 10, Princeton at Princeton; Oct. 31, Notre Dame probably at Cleveland; Nov. 7, Pennsylvania and Nov. 28, Army, both at Philadelphia.

The National Rifle Association advised the academy athletic authorities that the Navy's pistol team had won the national intercollegiate championship, with Purdue in second place and Virginia Military Instimte, third.

W E S T VIRGINIA

With the aid of Warren McNamara's big bat, Phil Hurt hurled the Navy baseball team to a 5 to 3 victory over the West Virginia University nine on April 18.

McNamara collected a pair of doubles in the clutch to drive in three Navy runs

and ruin a pretty fair pitching performance by West Virginia's Art Reader.

The Mountaineers scored their brace of tallies in the seventh without getting the ball out of the infield, and without the aid of a base on baUs or error. The first three men up glanced infield hits off Navy gloves, two of them being fired at Hurt. One of these netted a run, and infield outs brought the next two runners across the plate.

Navy registered a pair of runs in the first frame when McNamara's double scored Jackie Stowe, who had walked and Jack Brennan who had singled. In the third Brennan singled again, stole second and third and scored on Frank Schettino's infield single.

Navy picked up lone runs in the fifth and sixth innings. McNamara's second of three hits sent Stowe home in the former frame after the middie captain had rapped a hit to left and stolen second. The final run was a gift. After George Watson had singled he went to second on a passed baU and scored as Napoleneoni booted Lefty Lavrakas' bounder.

While Navy played errorless baU, the fielding gems were mrned in by Rodrique, first baseman and Hardineau, rightfielder of the Mountaineer team.

MARYLAND

The Navy baseball team won its annual game from its neighborhood rival, the University of Maryland, 4 to 3 on April 22 but had to go 11 innings before licking the Terps and their star pitcher.

Max Hunt, in particular.

Hunt limited the middies to one earned run, but his mates handed the middies three others, including the winning marker, although things were

mighty black for the visitors at the moment.

In the eleventh the middies' swatting shortstop, McNamara, got his fourth hit of the game, was sacrificed to second by Jack Casey, at which point he dashed for third base. Catcher Lou Tierney heaved to second and Pop Wharton took the peg and relayed toward third but the baU went high and into the Old Liners' dugout and McNamara walked on home.

Lou Luberda, who took over the Navy relief job as starting pitcher Jack Davis wobbled in the eighth hurled brilliantly not aUowing the Terps a hit.

Navy, a fine defensive club all season, broke loose with a bevy of eight errors and a passed baU to hand the Maryland team two of its three runs. In fact, both teams went into the eighth without an earned taUy although the score was deadlocked 2 to 2.

Maryland got a lone run in the eighth and would have had more except that loose base ruiming helped the middies execute a double play. The first two men up in the frame. Stuffy Evans and Merle DuVaU singled but the former was caught at third when he went into the base standing up which enabled Paul Lacy's long throw to nip him at the hot corner. MeanwhUe, DuVaU over ran first and was caught off in the same series of throws. After that Ernie Travis walked, went to second on Dan Booth's base knock to right and scored as Dick Cleveland got a lucky hit. Cleveland's bounder hit a pebble and jumped over the middie second baseman's head.

Navy came back with a bang to tie the score. Captain Stowe tripled to deep left center and scored as Lacy laid down a perfect squeeze play. McNamara followed with a long blow to center but was out at the plate on a weU relayed peg by Wharton.

Maryland scored first in the second frame on two Navy errors and a base on baUs. Navy went ahead 2 to 1 in the fourth on singles by Lacy and McNamara a sacrifice and Travis' boot. Maryland tied up in the fifth as McNamara made two errors on the same play, dropping a pop fly by Tierney and then throwing the baU away at first, which throw enabled the Terp catcher to race to third base. Hunt then singled through second to send the marker across.

Hurt had a shutout, except for the momentary loss of control in the third frame, when the only two men he walked the entire game were driven home by Bobby Gersten's long single and Dub Johnson's hoist to left field.

While Hurt was the defensive star, along with some good fielding at third base by Watson, Lacy, Navy center fielder knocked in four of the middies' tallies.

Lacy's single, foUowing an error on Captain Stowe's bounder and Brennan's hit and run base knock, accounted for the first taUy.' Then, in the second. Lacy smashed a three-run homer to center field. The inning opened with Watson reaching first as his roller trickled through Johnny Hearn's legs. Lavrakas scored Watson with a double down the left field foul line. The next two Navy batters were retired but Brennan walked and then came Lacy's swat to give the home club a five-run lead.

Navy won its sixth consecutive game May 2, and the tenth in twelve starts, as Captain Stowe tripled in the seventh to score Hurt, Tar pitcher, and win a 2 to 1 duel from the William and Mary tossers.

The contest was a stout mound battle between Hurt and the Indians' smoke ball artist, Roy Merritt. Both pitchers were stingy, allowing but five safe hits,, and the count was tied from the fourth until Stowe hit his three base wallop to left tallying Hurt who had walked.

William and Mary went out in front in the third as John Korczowski hit a homer far over the head of Lacy, middie centerfielder. Lacy evened things up in the next frame, however, as he singled, pilfered second and came on home as Bob Higgins singled to left.

Hurt did not aUow an Indian runner to pass first base after Korczowski's circuit blow. However, the visitors had their big chance in the second frame when they fiUed the base with none out due to two hits and the only base on balls Hurt issued. Hurt then fanned Sol Colonna and forced both Marvin Bass and Merritt to pop to shortstop Warren McNamara.

Gettysburg tied up in the third as Dick Martz homered and a hit batsman, stolen base by Wally Kane and Al Murtoff's single netted a pair of runs.

Navy went on a spree in the fourth scoring half a dozen tallies as the Tar batsmen came through with four hits bunched with a pair of walks and an error. The middies continued to threaten the rest of the game despite the efforts of Ralph Cox, fast ball right bander.

Every Navy batsman came through with at least one hit while Gillis and Stowe furnished the defensive feamres.

VIRGINIA

Navy's fast stepping and hard hitting basebaU team turned in its eighth straight triumph May 9 by defeating the University of Virginia, 15 to 7 in a loosely played contest marred by seven Cavalier misplays.

The middies jumped into the lead in the second inning and widened the count to 13 to 4 at the end of the third frame.

Meanwhile, Hurt, starting Navy pitcher, had trouble locating the plate and, after one man had batted in the fifth, he was replaced by Luberda who finished the contest. In the seventh, Virginia nicked Luberda for their final three markers due to two infield errors, a base on balls and singles by Norm Farquhar and Charlie Brown.

The Cavaliers scored three runs in the first inning as Charles Merritt tripled behind a wild streak by Hurt. The middies tied up in the same frame on consecutive hits of Stowe, Gillis, and Lacy and Higgins' safety in the clutch.

Virginia went ahead at the start of the second as Brown walked, was sacrificed to second and scored on Dick Wiltshire's base knock. Navy scored five runs in the same frame on five safe hits. For the second time in two innings Higgins produced the most damaging blow and Al Scarfuro starting Virginia pitcher was relieved by Herb Kirk.

Navy scored five more runs off Kirk in the third frame, and the southpaw was sent to the showers. Hank Lathum, third visiting pitcher held the middies away from the plate until the sixth when Luberda doubled behind hits by Higgins and Lavrakas.

Farquhar of Virginia furnished the fielding gems of the day.

u p until the eighth, the contest had been a pitching duel between Navy's underhand, crossfire artist, Luberta and Andy Tomasic, with honors about even, although Temple went ahead 3 to 1 with a pair of runs in the seventh. In the end Luberda had aUowed only four hits while Navy slapped out ten.

Gillis opened the Navy eighth with a single and raced on to third as Lacy doubled. McNamara was walked, fiUing the hassocks. Fritz Hansen, next Navy batter, tapped to Tomasic, whose throw to first was wide, Gillis scoring and leaving the bases filled.

Harold Gotwals, Owl catcher, attempted to catch McNamara off second and, while his throw was accurate, the ball went through second baseman, Joe Chielli, Lacy scoring and the other Navy pair moving up a base. With the score tied, Schettino, subbing for the injured Navy captain, Stowe, singled to center, scoring McNamara and Hansen. After Schettino had stolen second, Jake Ruppert singled to score him.

Temple scored in the first frame as Wallace Fletcher walked, was advanced to third as Earl Gotwals singled and scored as the middie infield unsuccessfully attempted to execute a double play.

Navy tied it up in the fifth as Labarakas singled and was driven home as Luberda tripled.

Temple got going in the seventh as Harold Gotwals tripled and scored as Frank Bianchi was safe on Ruppert's bobble. Bianchi moved up on a sacrifice and tallied on Joe Onesti's double.

Lacrosse Navy, 12; LOyola (Baltimore), 8 Navy, 10; Rutgers, 6 Navy, 18; Pennsylvania, 0 Princeton, 12; Navy, 1.

LOYOLA (BALTIMORE)

The visitors, held the middies scoreless in the third period and on Bob McElroy's goal, were on the short end of a 9-5 count. Both tens tallied thrice in the final quarter.

RUTGERS

The Navy lacrosse team scored a hardearned 10 to 6 victory over Rutgers on April 25 at New Brunswick, N. J. It was the fifth straight win for the midshipmen.

Navy opened fast to take a 3-0 lead in the first half of the opening period on goals by Ira Oxley, Buddy Carter and Bobby Booze, and a 4-1 advantage at the end of the period.

Rutgers cut the lead in the second period and Navy led, 6-4, at half time.

The middies added two taUies in each of the closing periods, while Rutgers scored their final goal in the closing frame.

Oxley and Booze led the Navy players with three goals each.

PENNSYLVANIA

After a scoreless initial four minutes the Navy attack broke loose for three goals in 45 seconds, and the middie lacrosse team went on to defeat the University of Pennsylvania 18 to 0 in the annual game on May 2.

Ken Gummerson scored the first goal of the game and aU three of his total for the day iij the first period as the middies rung up a 7 to 0 first quarter advantage. Bob Booze, leading scorer of the game with four tallies made a pair of his scores in the first quarter. Carter and Ochenrider being the other middies to hit the net.

In the second period, Navy substimtes had a harder time getting the ball past Bill Young, Quaker goalie who put up a stout defense at this point. Navy was held to two goals in this quarter. However the middies came back in the third quarter with seven more tallies and made another pair in the fourth quarter.

Penn had trouble clearing the ball and as a result Navy was in possession of it most of the game. Penn had only eight shots at the net during the entire fracas.

It was Navy's seventh straight win in an unbeaten season and Penn's fourth loss in seven starts.

Led by Gus Brady, high-scoring second defenseman. Navy's lacrossemen beat a stubborn Loyola stick team 12 to 8 on April 18.

Brady started off the scoring in the first quarter, dented the netting again in the second period and added two more goals in the final stanza. Dick Keller was the sparkplug of the Loyola attack, getting four goals. Besides getting one tally, Loyola's Cory Walker made some nice assists.

The National Rifle Association of America has advised that Midshipman M. H. Sappington, of BarnesviUe, Georgia, has been selected as a team member of the 1942 AU-American IntercoUegiate Rifle Team. Midshipman Sappington wiU receive one of the Golden BuUet awards and a letter of commendation from Mr. C. B. Lister, Secretary-Treasurrir of the National Rifle As-

sociation of America. Midshipman Sappington captained the Navy's 1942 SmaU Bore Rifle team.

The National Rifle Association also informed Commander Perry that the Navy Plebe Rifle team had won 2nd place in the 1942 Freshman Team Championship with a score of 1394. The team members will receive medals from the Rifle Association.

From start to finish today, it was Princeton aU the way. Led by their brilliant captain, Elmer Weisheit, the Nassau lads tallied in every period while their rock-ribbed defense tore apart the middie attack.

Navy's plucky ten couldn't get close enough to the Tiger goal to do any damage. It's defense was thrown off balance time and time again by the Bengal attackmen who used a fast-break to receive well-aimed passes from Weisheit and Dan Smckey.

While Jack Palmer and Howdy MarshaU led the Princeton charge with three goals each, the whole Tiger team played

brilliantly, with their teamwork standing out.

Although outclassed. Navy let the visitors know it was a ball game by hardriding tactics and sharp body blocks.

Crew PRINCETON

Navy opened the crew season on April 18 on Lake Carnegie by finishing a length ahead of the Princeton varsity crew in a mile and three quarter race. The Navy time was 10:43.6 to Princeton's 10:47.4.

The Princeton junior varsity crew won over the same course, defeating the Navy jayvees by four lengths. The times— Princeton juniors, 10:48.8; Navy jayvees, 11:12.4.

After the varsity race. Dr. Harold W. Dodds, president of Princeton, presented Capt. Calvin H. Cobb, representing the Naval Academy, a large silver cup donated by Princeton and Navy alumni to mark thirty years of rowing relations between the two schools.

The Navy varsity crew got away to an early lead in the Princeton race and slowly pulled away from the Tiger oarsmen. Phil Childs, middie stroke, got his boat out ahead by half a length in the first 100 yards setting a beat of 40 to the minute. He kept up the pace until Princeton was forced to settle down to a steady 34.

The Navy varsity and plebe crews carried the blue and gold of the midshipmen to victory over Columbia on the Severn river on April 25 but the Columbia jayvees nosed out the Navy junior varsity by one-eighth of a length.

The middies varsity, hitting a high pace at the start, pulled out ahead of the Columbia oarsmen, and finished the mile and three-quarter race two and a half lengths ahead. The time was Navy, 9:30.2; Columbia, 9:41.

The Columbia junior varsity, came from behind in the last half mile to nose out a good Navy jayvee crew over the same distance. The Columbia oarsmen finished in 9:49.2 with the midshipmen crossing the finish line in 9:49.8.

The Navy Plebes had everything their own way over the Columbia freshmen taking the lead at the start and stretching it to eight and a quarter lengths at the finish. The Plebes covered the course in 9:43 and the Columbia jayvees in 10:16.

The freshmen and jayvee races got away on smooth water, with a following wind, but the course roughed just before the varsity contest and the wind shifted across the river.

Rear Admiral John R. Beardall, superintendent of the Naval Academy, on his yacht, the Anita Clay, followed the races.

Gray yard patrol boats and motor launches loaded with officers, midshipmen, Columbia supporters and friends were grouped around the finish line against the green and brown background of the Severn banks.

The Navy varsity, stroked by Phil Childs, Brookline, Mass., got a jump on the Columbia varsity at the start, hitting 40 to the minute, before settling to a 37 beat. Bill Loweth, Columbia stroke, dropped to a 34 after the racing start and at the quarter-mile post was trailing Navy by a quarter length.

The middies opened water before the crews reached the three-quarter mile point and Navy had settled down to a strong 36 beat which it maintained until the finish.

Ken Longnecker, Plebe, and Tom Hagerman, of Maryland, jointly shattered the 10-year-old Plebe high jump record by clearing 5 feet 11 inches. The tie for first place was the only front line mark made by the freshmen.

The Plebe-Penn freshmen tennis match ended with honors even at the end of the singles. The freshmen took the first doubles match only to have the Plebes win the final two doubles. The final event went 11 to 9 before the Plebe team of Pennington and Schultz whipped Gotaline and Newman, 6-4; 3-6; 11-9.

The Plebes won in golf and track on May 2 but dropped games in basebaU, lacrosse and tennis.

The golfers won an easy 9 to 0 victory over the Western Maryland freshmen, while the track team overwhelmed the North Carolina freshmen, 1 0 3 ^ to 131/2.

McKinley High School of Washington, defeated the Plebes 4 to 2 in basebaU, while the Baltimore Poly lacrosse team won from the Plebe stickmen, 8 to 4. The Virginia freshmen netmen nosed out the Plebe tennis team, 5 to 4.

The Plebes had a good day on May 9, the tennis team defeating the Maryland freshmen, 9 to 0; the track team winning from Mercersburg, 96 to 21; the baseball team defeating Baltimore City College, 6 to 4; and the lacrosse team winning 10 to 7 from the strong Friends School of Baltimore.

Naval Officer Netmen Win The Naval Academy Officers' Club tennis team defeated the St. John's College netmen in an informal match on May 2 by a 7 to 0 score.

It was the first match for each team and the play at times was close and exciting. The teams wiU meet again later in the season.

Comdr. R. R. Hartung, who was scheduled to play with the officers' team, was unexpectedly called out of the city.

For the past three weeks, the Executive Department has been presenting a series of training films to the regiment in Memorial Hall after evening meal each night. The films shown so fjr have dealt with identification of aircraft and ships, and care in handling confidential, secret, and restricted publications. Speaking of motion pictures, the Bureau of Navigation is making a training film here at the Naval Academy now. Soâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;we'U be seeing you in the movies.

Any midshipman caught holding hands with his drag wiU be confined from the time that he is caught until the week-end is over. You can be sure that they will be on their toes in the fumre, because there are plenty of snakes around here who would be more than glad to entertain some poor victim's guest.

Navy has been doing very well in spring athletics this year. W e beat the University of Maryland in baseball in the eleventh inning by a score of 4-3. The lacrossemen beat Pennsylvania 18-0; the tennis team defeated the University of Virginia, 9-0, and Pennsylvania, the toughest opponent on the schedule, 6-3.

Tlie dinghy men won the Middle Atlantic Dinghy Championship and became first recipient of the America Trophy.

This trophy is a half model of the famous yacht "America" under sail, and is made from parts of the original yacht. Lafayette, Cornell, and five other teams competed in the sailing races, and came out second and third in that order. As to crew. Navy consecutively defeated Cor-

nell, Princeton, and Columbia.

Even the officers-of-the-watch like to have a little fun now and then. As the 8th company, third class, was marching to ordnance recitation the other day, we noticed the O. O. W. and his messenger marching side by side in the rear rank.

The company left the second battalion terrace deck and did a column left to march through the first and third wings to Dahlgren Hall. When the rear rank reached the pivot, the O. O. W. and his messenger executed a perfect column left and went right on with the company, We hear that when the sections reached the entrance to the ordnance building, the unit commander invited the O. D. to join the class for the recitation. The officer-of-the-watch politely refused, stating that he had not studied his lesson, and returned to the Main Office.

Another officer-of-the-watch decided that he would see if midshipmen are as military as they appear to be. As a second battalion section marched onto the terrace returning from class yesterday, the O. O. W. called the section leader aside, and in a low tone, said, "When you halt your section, give them "right face' instead of 'left face,' and see what happens." Well, the second battalion sections are so used to executing left faces on the terrace that when this section leader gave the order "right face," the

He is in charge of the Navy Relief Society funds in Annapolis, that is a big job in itself. Although funds are avaUable to both officers and enlisted personnel alike, usage is almost exclusively to families of the latter. Since the outbreak of the war, great hardships have been endured by the enlisted personnel and many families were given fares home foUowing Pearl Harbor.

Already four Chaplains have gone down with their ships in the present war, while as many more are known to be capmred in the Philippines alone.

There have been Chaplains in the Navy from the very beginning. When the first Privateers went out to fight the British in 1775, the bravest Chaplain went along. An act of March 22, 1799, provided that all prize money be shared among a group of officers in which was included the Chaplain.

The early day Chaplain was just about as hard up as the proverbial church mice.

In 1829, the Secretary of the Navy set an aUowance for a chaplain's salary at $40 •a month, with two rations a day and an aUowance of $250 a year for rent. Also, $12 for candles, nine cords of wood and one servant at $16 a month.

In the Chaplain's office of the Chapel is a record of the Chaplain's Registers, since the founding of the Naval School.

and guests, attended the regular monthly dinner meeting held at the Stafford Hotel, Baltimore, Md. During the business meeting the resignations of Lieutenant Commander Philip F. Hambsch, U. S. N. (retired), President, and John T. Waldhauser, Jr., Treasurer, were accepted with deep regret. The former has been transferred to N. Y. C , and the latter is returning to active duty. A vote of thanks for services rendered was given to both.

We were fortunate to have two guest speakers on this occasionâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;Mr. M. F. Cook and Dr. E. H. Scofield of the Calvert Distillery Company. Mr. Cook was the first to address us and in a forceful manner told what the liquor industry is doing to assist National Defense and emphasized what a deplorable condition the country would have been in without this industry, and stressed the necessity of alcohol toward war industry.

Mr. Scofield spoke on what the industries are doing to improve liquor, and gave a graphic description of the processes employed tc make the improvements.

We are circulating the ballots for the annual election of trustees, and you will probably receive them in the mail in due course.

There have been so many changes in the alumni personnel in this area that it has not been possible to have a good meeting, although we have made a number of efforts by telephone to gather a good-sized group. Our Steering Committee met last month (8 men), at which time we checked up on the records of eight very promising candidates, most of whom now have appointments, and all of whom have passed their preliminary physical examinations. The various alumni members have all taken on some service assignments on behalf of the Navy, such as the Navy Citizens Committee, which promotes recruting, officer personnel procurement, power squadron training, and similar assignments. We have all been busy, although there has not been much news in this for SHIPMATE. Now that there are more than two hundred Naval officers on duty in this area, we are planning a round robin get-together which will probably be held at the Naval Service School, Dearborn, Michigan, about the last week of May. We have aided the Navy Relief program in this area, in fact, our membership initiated the drive and the preliminary activities leading up to the visiting this week of

the Hollywood Cavalcade. At this writing the Navy Relief Fund for Michigan is well over the $100,000 mark and on its way to meet the $300,000 quota. The men active in this work are Allen Rutter, Ralph Nening, Bob Waldron, Elmer Stoker, Ed McPherson, and a number of others.

We have a tentative go-ahead on the plan to "aaivate" the Michigan State Naval Defense force, and have been requested to prepare an organization plan which will bring into semi-aaive service a number of oldtimers who will act as a training nucleus for men who will eventually join the Navy or the Naval Reserve. This program seems to have official sanaion, and will extend the man power reservoir of trained men to greater size during the next two years.

Commander W. E. Miller has been detached from this area for other duties since my last writing. We heard indirectly that Commander E. L McQuiston, our former recruiting ofiicer, missed the blitz at Pearl Harbor, and I also heard very indirealy that my old roommate. Commander N. B. Hopkins, is L'kewise still going strong. Our local contingent has expressed itself as highly pleased at the citation given Commander Sol Isgrig.

We shall provide you with a full account of our next regular meeting, and hope that you and some of the men from Annapolis manage to make Detroit a port of call in the near future.

NEW YORK BRANCH The May luncheon meeting of the Naval Academy Association of New York was held at the Midday Club, 25 Broad St., N. Y. C , on Wednesday, May 13 at 12.30 p.m. A large group turned out to hear Major General Follet Bradley, U. S. A., guest speaker, who spoke on "Army and Navy Collaboration."

General Bradley is a graduate of the U. S. Naval Academy, Class 1910. He was a Field Artillery Officer during the World War, and is now in corrmiand of the First Air Force.

Monthly meetings were held through the fall and winter, with the meeting prior to the West Point dinner being the payment of the annual standing bet on the Army-Navy game, in which representatives of the losing team buy those of the winning team a dinner.
