Our Alumni Soon after you receive this copy of SHIPMATE, the annual election will have been held and the new Officers and Trustees will have been chosen to manage and guide our Association.

The Association was founded in 1886 because of a desire to perpetuate the traditions of the Naval Academy, preserve its records, and to render assistance to its members. It has continued throughout the years and much good has been derived by the members from the work of those who have served. The membership is composed of men in all walks of life; Military, Professional, and Business. The Association has survived because of its high ideals. The high standards of the Naval Academy, from whence our alvimni comes, are known throughout the world. The basic missions of preservation of records, aid to our members, and ABOVE ALL, the preservation of the integrity of the Association, have been maintained. Never has the Association had "an axe to grind" and it never should. After all, the Association is for ALL the Alumni COLLECTIVELY and should always be operated and controlled by YOUR Officers and Trustees.

1938 On Thursday, June 2nd, the Class of 1938 will graduate from the Naval Academy and many of their courses will separate, a few never to meet again. The graduation class is composed of some 439 members from every state in the Union. Twenty-six of the class are destined to enter the U. S. Marine Corps, three hundred and ninety-three will be commissioned as Ensigns in the Navy, and twenty will enter civilian life, due to failure to meet the physical requirements.

The Class President is J. A. Saxten, Jr., from Maryland. The Vice President is F. D. Case, Jr., from Illinois, Captain of the 1938 Lacrosse Team and one of the star backs of the Football Team.

The Secretary-Treasurer is C. R. Brown, from Wisconsin.

SHIPMATE extends its congratulations and best wishes to the graduates of 1938 and wishes them success and happiness in their future.

mand of the Practice Cruise Squadron, and Captain R. C. "Ike" Giffen, '07, is in command of the SAVANNAH.

Midshipman's Mess Jacket The Superintendent of the Naval Academy recently announced that the Midshipmen are to have a new uniform, a Mess Jacket. The announcement was greeted with enthusiasm by the Brigade.

The Jacket will be very similar to that now worn by Ofiicers, the chief difference being that the Midshipman's jacket will have a vest as an integral part of it while, in the Officer's jacket, the vest is separate.

The Midshipman's jacket can be easily changed to that worn by Ofiicers. The new uniform will appear June Week.

The Superintendent also announced a change in the white service uniforms now worn by the Midshipmen. The anchors, which formerly adorned rhe collar, will be removed, and, shoulder straps will be added, similar to those now worn by Officers. An anchor will be placed on each strap. The class designation will be indicated by stripes in addition to the anchor on the straps: First Classmen, three stripes; Second Classmen, two stripes; Third Classmen, one stripe; Plebes, only the anchor. This change also was greeted with enthusiasm by the Brigade.

where they will arrive on June 18. Nine days will be spent in this port and the Midshipmen given an opportunity to visit the various points of interest within reach. In each port visited on the Cruise, previous arrangements have been made whereby those Midshipmen who desire can go on tours to the principal cities and points of interest at a greatly reduced rate. This arrangement makes possible their obtaining the maximum benefit for the money available. On June 27 the Squadron sails for Copenhagen, Denmark, arriving on July 5 to spend a fourday visit. On July 9, the Squadron proceeds to Portsmouth, England, arriving on July 15. Eight days are to be spent there and on July 23 the Squadron heads for the U. S. A. Early the 6th of August, they will enter the Virginia Capes and drop anchor in Hampton Roads. Ships will be fueled and provisioned, and on August 8 the Squadron proceeds to the Southern Drill Grounds to hold Midshipmen's short range practice. On August 12 the Football squad will disembark and proceed to Annapolis where rheir ""SEPT. LEAVE" will begin. The same day the Squadron heads for New York City where they will arrive on August 13 to spend a four-day

Coastal Cruises The Second Class, some 500 strong, will remain at the Naval Academy for the Summer, as has been the custom. The Class will be divided into three sections and each section will make a cruise along the East Coast of three weeks duration.

The Destroyers designated for this purpose are: DECATUR; J. FRED TALBOT; FAIRFAX; LEARY; BADGER; and HERBERT. The ports to be visited are: Dahlgren, Va., Newport, R. I., New London, Conn., New York City, and Norfolk, Va. Their ""SEPT. LEAVE" also begins on August 25.

Board of Visitors, 1938 The annual visit of the Board of Visitors took place April 25 to 28 at the Naval Academy. The unofficial report is that the Board was favorably impressed with the appearance and affairs of the Academy. Each year a Board of Visitors is appoinred by the President of the U. S.; the Vice President of the U. S.; and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, to inspect the Academy, study the subjects assigned to the Midshipmen, the progress made in them, the health of the Midshipmen, the cleanliness of buildings, and other matters pertaining to the Academy. This year the President appointed: Dr. Ernest Martin Hopkins, President of Dartmouth College; Dr. Charles E. Beury, President of Temple University; Dr. Frank P. Graham, President of University of North Carolina; Dr. Francis Pendleton Gaines, President of Washington and Lee University; Dr. Charles Seymour, President of Yale University; Dr. Qaude M. THE DOPE Mrs. J. L. Gray, daughter of Commander Stedman, '64, our oldest living graduate, writes to SHIPMATE for her father expressing his and her appreciation for the extra copies which were sent to them. Both the Commander, and Mrs. Gray, particularly wished that their congratulations for SHIPMATE be expressed in the second issue. The Commander was not feeling very good at the time of the letter. They live in Norwood, Virginia, and would like to have any of the Alumni, who are passing by Norwood, stop in to see them. It had been hoped that the Commander, and Mrs. Gray, could visit the Naval Academy during June Week, but, it is feared that the trip would be too much on him.

• Mortimer E. Cooley, '78, Dean Emeritus of the University of Michigan, sends us the welcome word that he expects to attend the Graduation Exercises at the Academy this year, and also attend the 60th anniversary of his own graduation.

Dean Cooley graduated as a Cadet Engineer and resigned from the Navy in 1886.

Paul Miles, '27, writes from California that he is still in the Radio business and getting along.

G. W. Welch, '34, writes from Freeland, Pa., and tells us that he is being retired because of physical disability.

Carvel Hall is now the property of Mr. and Mrs. Albert H. MacCarthy and was built in 1899 by William A. Earned, a brother of Mrs. MacCarrhy, while he was the resident archirect for the new Naval Academy. Mr. MacCarthy graduated from the Naval Academy in 1897.

This close association with the Naval Academy and a lifelong interest in Annapolis and its colonial history has prompted the present owners to maintain and operate Carvel Hall in a manner complimentary to its builder.

Present plans call for the completion of construction, with the exception of the new wing which will be completed during the summer, in ample time for the reopening of Carvel Hall for June Week.

This will be a decided convenience for the many June Week visitors who have made Carvel Hall their headquarters for years past as well as for the hundreds of tourists from various States who plan a visit to this famous hotel as part of their irinerary.

1908 Reunion Information has been received that the Class of 1908 will have a dinner at the ARMY-NAVY Club on Eye Street in Washington, D. C, Friday evening, May 27rh. The dinner is to celebrate their 30th Anniversary since graduation from the Naval Academy. Walter Heiberg, '08, the Secretary of the Class, is looking after arrangements. His address is: 1826 Wyoming Avenue, Washington, D. C.

John Dowling Keeler Mr. Keeler, graduate of the Naval Academy in the class of 1870, has written a very fine letter to the SecretaryTreasurer in which he expressed his appreciation and approval of SHIPMATE, and enclosed a check to help out. He also called attention to the fact that he was born in Ohio on December 9, 1849, which makes him the sixth oldest living Alumnus of the Association.

Mr. Keeler resigned from the Navy on June 15, 1885. Since that time he has resided near Bedford City, Virginia. He is hale and hearty and extends his greetings to the Alumni.

On the Thompson Trophy Cup is inscribed annually the name of the Midshipman who has done most during the year for the promotion of athletics at the Naval Academy. A small replica of this cup is presented to the Midshipman receiving the award.

Navy's Golfers took it on the chin when Virginia took 8 out of 9 matches.

The Navy boys are inexperienced, this being their first match of the Season, but they should hit a winning stride soon.

Retirement of Mr. John Schutz, Wrestling Coach at the U. S. Naval A c a d e m y In accordance with the provisions of the Retirement Annuity Plan established by the Navy Athletic Association in 1934, Mr. John Schutz, who has been head mentor of Navy wrestling since 1912, will be retired as the coach of this sport on July 1, 1938.

Mr. Schutz has developed some excellent teams during his coaching career at the Naval Academy. Many of his wrestlers have competed in Intercollegiate and SHIPMATE

National meets, giving creditable performances.

Mr. Schutz will continue his duties as an Assistant Chief Instructor in Physical Training.

Mr. Schutz will be succeeded as head coach of wrestling by Mr. Raymond Swartz, who at present is assistant wrestling coach and football line coach at the Oklahoma A. and M. College, Stillwater, Oklahoma, from which college he was graduated in 1930. Mr. Swartz will also assist in coaching football and track at the Naval Academy.

While a student at Oklahoma A. and M., Mr. Swartz won letters in wrestling, football, and track.

Before assuming his coaching duties at Oklahoma A. and M., Mr. Swarrz held the position of wrestling and track coach, as well as line coach in football, at Central State Teachers College, Edmond, Oklahoma.

Mr. Swartz will report at the Naval Academy on July 1, 1938. SHIPMATE extends a hearty welcome to Ray Swartz.

Adam Cup Race The Adam Cup Race, which is rowed annually between the varsity crews of Harvard, Permsylvania, and Navy, will be rowed on the Severn on May 21sr. This race will end the Navy's short distance crew season. The disrance is 1% miles.

This Race was instituted in 1933. The first race was rowed on the Charles at Cambridge, Mass., and was won by the Navy, Penn second, and Harvard third.

In 1934, it was rowed at Philadelphia and won by Pennsylvania, Navy second, and Harvard third. The 1935 race was rowed on the Severn, Penn again winning. Navy second, and Harvard third. In 1936, the event was held again on the Charles, Navy winning, Penn second, Harvard third, and M. I. T., a guest crew, fourth. Last year, the race was rowed at Philadelphia. Navy won. Harvard was second, and Penn finished last.

The Adams Cup race was instituted in honor of Honorable Charles Francis Adams, formerly Secretary of the Navy.

The winning crew each year obtains temporary possession of the Adams Trophy, a magnificent cup of the period of George III, hallmarked ""London 1820," and made

by Crispin Fuller, famous silversmith of that time. The Cup was one of a collection which belonged to the late Rodman Wanamaker of Philadelphia.

Mr. Julian W. Curtiss, who has acted annually as referee at the Poughkeepsie Regatta, will act as referee in the race.

In rhis race, the Navy immediately took the lead at the start of the race. CORNELL soon raised their beat and began to creep up on the Navy. At the mile Cornell had pulled abreast Navy and, in a few more yards, forged ahead. Almgren, Navy's stroke, gradually raised his beat but Cornell held doggedly to their precious lead. Wirh about 300 yards to go, and the Cornell crew rowing smoothly, it looked like they would lead the Navy across the finish. However, Almgren raised the beat to a 40 and, with less than a hundred yards to go, Navy caught and passed Cornell to win by a scant quarter of a length. Syracuse brought up the rearguard, finishing about 3V^ lengths behind Cornell. The times: NAVY—9:11 1/5; CORNELL—9:12 6/10; SYRACUSE—9:20 4/10.

Navy Sweeps The Severn!

Navy's Crews swept the Severn Saturday, April 30, in the three-cornered race with the Big Red of CORNELL and the Orange of SYRACUSE. In the Plebe event, the PLEBES led all the way being pushed by the Cornellians and flashing across the line in 10:04 5/10. Cornell followed in 10:07 5/10.

Syracuse did not enter a crew in this event.

In the J.V. Race, the second of the day, NAVY again led CORNELL to the Line but only after a hair-raising finish.

Cornell passed the Navy at the mile mark and continued to lead the J.V.'s until about 14 rnile from the finish when the Navy caught up. In the final drive, the Navy boat went up to a 38 beat and won

Lynn Taylor of California dropped only one point below this fine average with the most consistent shooting of any collegiate marksman, a variation of only two points (from 282 to 284) for every march of the entire season.

The Plebes open their season on the •wrong end of a 9-4 score, losing to Baltimore City College. The Plebes had a balloon ascension and before they got back to earth had committed 6 consecutive errors to let in 6 City boys. Their total miscues for the game were 10. ^.et's get together, Plebes!

Wednesday, April 20.

The Baseball game took on the aspects of a Cricket Match when the Navy team defeated Western Maryland 26-12. Max Bishop, the Navy's new popular coach, took his regulars out of the melee at the end of the sixth frame with the score 21-2. Ingram, Navy's captain, and Ralph Marm, center fielder, each hit for the circuit while in the game.

Saturday, April 23.

The Navy's crews, visiting Columbia on the Hudson, showed their wakes to their host in all three races rowed on the Hudson Saturday, thereby gaining further recognition as the East's Champions.

In the first race, the Plebes, in their first race of the season, served notice that they are to be reckoned with this year in the rowing world. The Plebes not only left the Columbia Freshmen behind but also did it in 7:41 2/5—1 1/5 seconds slower than the Navy Varsity. The Navy J.V.'s led the Columbia boat to the wire in the fast time of 7:41 1/5. In the third race, the Navy Varsity Eight, rowing a slow, deliberate stroke, won from the Columbia boat going away at the finish in 7:40 1/5. It is interesting to note the times of the Navy's crews in all three races.

Both the Navy J.V.'s and Plebes turned in better times than the fastest Columbia crew, which was their Varsiry, and whose time was 7:44 3/5. CONGRATULATIONS NAVY! C O N G R A T U L A TIONS BUCK WALSH! Still on the same Samrday,—Navy's Lacrosse team walloped Yale in Yale's own back yard by the score of 13-4, to remain unbeaten and untied for the season. Army, who defeated Yale the week before l6-0, was beaten by Rutgers by the close score of 4-3.

Navy's Tennis Team finally pulled out of the Doldrums and took over Cornell 6-3.

JUNE,

1938

In track, the Navy played host to Princeton and Columbia at Thompson Stadium and were entirely too polite to their guests, Princeton winning the meet with a score of 68. Columbia and Navy tied at 48 Vi each. However, the Navy scored in every event, which was more than either of the Visitors could do, and, in a dual meet, Navy would have won. ""Barney" Oldfield upset the dope in the mile run by beating Peter Bradley, Princeton's Intercollegiate Champ, in a real race, and leading Pete to the wire by a scant three yards. Jack Dalton, Navy's Captain, almost beat Princeton's Goold in the quarter in a most thrilling race in which both runners were clocked in 49.9 seconds.

In golf, the Navy's newest sport, the Navy Golfers were beaten by Princeron's golfers, 8-1. Harry Helfrick defeated H. Jones, Princeton, 3 and 2, for their only win.

The Plebe Baseball nine was set back

by Eastern High School of Washington by the score of 5-1.

The Navy "B" Squad took the measure of the Young American A.C. of Baltimore in a good game, 8-4.

The Navy's ""B" Lacrosse outfit defeated the newly-formed Washington Lacrosse Club by the score of 8-3.

In a fine exhibition of baseball, the NAVY took revenge on MARYLAND for the trouncing they gave the NAVY last year by thumping the TERPS 9-2. Despite the apparently one-sided score, the game was exciting and not really ""in the bag" until the last TERP was thrown out in the ninth. Both teams swatted the ball plenty; a total of 4 homers, 2 triples, 1 double and 9 singles being amassed in the game. Maryland collected 2 homers, 2 rriples, and two singles off of Brucker's offerings while the NAVY collected 2 homers, a double, and 7 singles off the combined offerings of Weidinger and Springer.

Cooke then drew free transportation. Ingram hit a Texas Leaguer, Cooke going ro rhird. Here the NAVY pulled a snappy double steal. Ingram started down to steal second, Cooke just far enough away from third. The TERP'S catcher threw to second and Cooke lit out for home. Back the ball flew to catch Cooke but too late, for Cooke slid in and was safe. Ingram went on to second. It was a nifty double steal and showed real team work. In the opening on the 6th, Maryland pushed over rheir second and last run of the game.

Surgent parked one on Brucker's sizzlers almost up on the P.G.'s front porch and ambled around the paths to score uninterrupted. In the ending of the sixth.

Springer, Maryland's ace south-paw, took over the burdens from Weidinger. Mann, met Springer's offeri-ng squarely and the ball bounced against a car out in deep right-centerfield, the longest drive seen on Lawrence Field this year. Salvia was on base at the time, and again, two runs scored. NAVY sewed rhe old ball game up in their half of the 7th. MacGuinness walked. Cooke, Ingram and Wooding singled in succession and, when the smoke cleared away, three runs had scored.

The game was played in the fast time of 1 hour and 50 minures. Both teams played hard, fast ball. NAVY was charged with one error, which caused no runs, and Maryland was charged with three which did not affect the score. All in all, it was a most creditable performance for N A V Y and showed the skillful coaching of Max Bishop.

It has been a long time since a NAVY baseball team has boasted a run of six straight wins. Cooke then poked out another single sending in both runners. Ingram then walloped one to deep center for three bases scoring the fifth run in their half of rhe inning. That was all the scoring for this inning. Niles was then sent in to finish the game for the Navy. However, in the 8th after Thompson had committed an error and Penn's Ogden had singled, "Ace" Brucker was called from the Bull Pen to stop the Red and Blue.

There was one away at the time. Shinn, Penn's center-fielder, hit into a double play to end their half of the inning. In the ending of the 8th, Navy put the game on ice by scoring three more runs.

Thompson and Cooke singled. Ingram was given an intentional pass to get at Wooding, who is not as dangerous as Ingram at bat. Wooding crossed up the dope by smacking a line single to right with all three runners scoring. Those runs were the last of the game. Brucker was touched for two successive singles to start the ninth. Then he bore down, fanning Brickley and Sacks, and making George pop out a foul.

The Naval Academy Association of Chicago held its April meeting on the 29th in the ward room of the Naval Reserve Armory in Chicago. The most eloquent remarks of the evening were made by the president in pointing out that although a goodly number were present, he had received telephone calls from only a very few that they would attend, thereby causing the president no small amount of anguish in making arrangements and spending money for food and what not in unknown quantities. It may be added that the secretary faithfully mailed over 100 cards announcing the meeting and imploring the members to telephone their intentions, even as shown by his statement of expenditures submitted to
