Number of Newbuilding Deliveries Rises - June 23, 2012 A total of 1,044 vessels of a combined 72.5 million dwt (21.1m cgt) were delivered in the first five months of this year. According to Clarkson Research, during the same period, dry bulker deliveries account for 65% (47.1 million dwt), which compares to 61% in the full year 2011 and 53% in 2010. During the same months, tanker and boxship deliveries record 14.7 million dwt and 7.6 million dwt each. On a yearly basis, overall 157.8 million-dwt newbuildings are expected to be delivered in 2012, a bit lower than ever-largest record of 162.5 million dwt in 2011, but higher than 151.5 million dwt in 2010. In 2013, delivery is to drop to 111.3 million dwt. As for deliveries by shipbuilding country, during January-May period, Chinese shipyards have delivered 28.1 million dwt (7.6m cgt), up by 4.4% year-on-year, the highest tonnage. South Korean builders have delivered 26.3 million dwt (7.3 million cgt), raising their level of output by 8.0% year-on-year, while Japanese yards has seen a 9.8% year-on-year decrease to 13.8 million dwt (3.9 million cgt). Meanwhile, in a report from Clarkson, since 2010 when global newbuilding delivery hit a new record with 52 million cgt, in cgt terms, the output is expected to slow down (49.8 million cgt in 2011, 46.7 million cgt in 2012 and 35.3 million cgt in 2013). In terms of country shares for delivery, at present, China takes around 40%, Korea 30% and Japan 20%. However, in 2015, Korea is to grow to 40%, while China and Japan would decline to around less than 30% and 15%, respectively.

China to build five Valemax Berths - June 18, 2012 China's transport ministry is approving plans to build berths for very large iron ore carriers of up to 400,000 dwt at its eastern Ningbo-Zoushan port. The ministry was reported as saying that it had approved the RMB4.91 billion ($770.39 million) project to build five berths with capacities ranging from 50,000 dwt to 400,000 dwt and was awaiting final approval of the National Development and Reform Commission. China allowed the first and only Valemax, the 380,000-tonne Berge Everest, to dock at Dalian in December 2011, but has since closed its ports to the massive ships citing safety concerns. ************************
