City Lobby

Shulin,Taiwan,2012,Thesis Design,Advicer:Y.L Tsai

The compose of city can result from many reasons, the most important is traffic, that’s mean how to connect with other town. A good traffic system could bring more convenience and prosperity, it also bring many environmental issues and society problems toward the city. In this design , I tried to analyze a city from history and traffic infrustructure, to know how a city develop, then try to deal with the relationship between station and city.

-about Shu-Lin city Shu-Lin city is my hometown, I had been live here for 18 years. It is a croewd, narrow and quick-pace city. As the last design in my university, I want to look back this city where I grow up , and improve the relationship between city space and civics, by handling the interface between railway and city .

This city is in north Taiwan, the distance to Taipei is about 20km.Whole city is sit between Da-Tung mountain range and Da-Han river. Railway run through the city, then divide Shu-Lin city into two parts.

Shu-lin City map made in 1904 A.D An important develop element of Shu-Lin is position. In 18th century, canals were main commercial trading routes and water suply of agricultural (A area),so the intersection of several canals became one small commercial center(B area), that was the begining of Shu-Lin history.

In the end of 19th century, railway was finished, in order to collect and distribution goods from canals ,First Shu-Lin station was set in 1901.

Since that time , railway and station have played a important role in this city till today.Even now canals were underground and invisible, railway still work as a major way to other places.

About 1940s , the population of east side of railway was increased quickly, some people moved across the railway to lived. Besides, waterways were silted in 1930s that canals were useless. So railway became new lifeline of the city.

In 1972, government set some industrial zone in the west Shu-Lin. Many people went there for a job since falling of traditional business in east side,so population of west side 1985 was increased rapidly.

The prosperity of west side has grown in a amazing speed these 10 years. Building was built one after another. On the other hand, east side has faced problem of insufficient of space and urban renew issues cause of 2012 old buildings.

as the figure shown, there are five types environmental behavior in this station, the train station not only transportation matter but also a corridor between east and west Shu-lin city. we can find that station space is not only for taking train in this city but also as a public corridor between east and west side.

East side

The most serious problem is no public open space in this area. So even though many pessengers and people pass the station area , there is no place to gather people, and no place to raise some public events. Besides, the pedestrian path around the train station were cut off by streets, people will not stick around because no reason and no place to, it also effected the city development.

parallel the railway the linear space between railway and urban context is another point I concrened. I think this is a interface that we can approach or not, and show the relationship between railway and city.

In order to deal with the problem of the roads in the east side, I selected a range that decided by density of use, then change the position of road and walkareas

Original Road

Red areas stand for roads , these two roads block the passengers’ walkway, and becomes a gap between urban space and train satation. That cut the flow of people so there is no people leave in station area, seems that station area is not belong to urban space but another space.

By this process, we can create more available space for passengers and connect with business street in front of the station in the same time. I think is more friendly for passengers and citizens.

Walkway system Link with station and sidewalk of city together, it’s continuous.

Parking space Keep a distance from plaza area.So traffic has less effect to passengers.

Road system Change the position of roads and walkways, so walking area for citizan will not block by road. The site I selected is belong to Taiwan Railways Administration, so it’s obviously as a public space. Here I analyzed and did some design about this place bu layering,

About structure,in order to prevent that column will cut the flow of crowd, and make a symbol of this city, I decided using big truss system. This way can make building more spacious and create strong image of this city.

The program of station in this city is not only for transportation but also shopping. eating.or listening a speech raised by bookstore. You can take a photo of train or just sit on the sky plaza for all afternoon. Providing a space that citizen can communicate each other , then let city life more coloful, that’s my concept of this project.

Social Tree Housing Taipei,Taiwan,2012,Bachelor 4, Advicer:Y.L Tsai

Social housing is built for vulnerable groups or young families who can’t afford expensive house in the city. Most of these families have some problem that should be cared from other people, like children. elders.or disabled. In order to take care for these people, residents have to connect each other. These connections are just like branches, let members in this community can link and help each other, just like a big tree. All for one,one for all.

In this case,I want to focus on young families and elders family. Now Taiwan is an aging society, with the decline of birthrate, the amount of elders is more than young people. I set a situation that these residents are dual-earner families. When parents go to work, elders can take care of their children, and elders will not be so boring in the same time. Then the relationship of residents will be better through help each other.

Social housing is a big issue in Taiwan resently. Because the house price in Taipei is so high that many people can not afford in pass few years. In order to solve this problem, governments built some congregate housing for them, and government play a role as a houselord,So many poor families, young families and disabled families can find a space for living.

Children are like center that connects everyone in this community. Then new life will birth here continuously. This community is just like a tree and social housing provides not only a space for living but also a source of vitality this area.

I find that if we subtract some volumes, we can get more outdoor space that avoid tight situation in this area.

North

Because there are two natural green zones near the site, avoid cutting down the connection between these green zones, I seperate the volumn of the building into two parts. The gap between these parts become not only a green and light corridor, but also a public space that can allow residents gather here .

Shih-Tsao Tourist Center

The case is in southwest Taiwan, and the site is very special. Here was an old battlefield about 300 years ago. The temple next to the site was built for the worrior died in the battle between Taiwanese and Dutch. Now , the temple has become people’s religion space around this area. Besides, this area has the largest wetland ecology in southern Taiwan. To sum up,this site has both humanities and nature scenes, so I tried to design a tourist center to connect these elements each other.

The coast line in southwest Taiwan is smooth, and almost beach. There are many ponds and wetland here, and also left some ruin water gate, that provides a good evironment to keep migratory bird staying. So here is also a famous bird-watching spot.

Salt industry used to be an important industry here. It had been 300 years since Dutch came to Taiwan till 1991. So this area has many small pool for salt. Though now this industry was not here anymore, these pool also form a special landscape of this area.

In 17th century, there was a big lagoon in southwest Taiwan, the red point is the position of site. It was an important place where Dutch wanted to occupy,so Taiwanese had a battle against Dutch at this place.

In 19th century, the lagoon was deposited with mud, so it became smaller, and then changed into wetland or fish farm.

The most special landscape is that there are many small fish farming pools and oyster cultivate frames in this area, some pools used to providing salt but now is for fish farming. This is the most important economic activity in this place.

In 21th century, the lagoon was gone, and wetlands was changed into many fish farm ponds. That is a special scene here.

Housing is the most of building type in the world, each place has its life style and context, then cause many types of housing. In this case,we choosed our customers and setted some programs they need and found a site in limitted area. This was my first architectural project, also as my start of learning the relationship between people and city.

Issue Site

Plan Drawing

Our site was limited in Tainan, the area along the Cheng-Kong road.As the old block in this city, the context here is very similar with the original space style in Tainan because of its small lane and crowded housing.

The site is near Chih-Kan tower, one of the oldest area in Tainan, because of it ,this area is saved from being urban renewed and over developed, that preserve the context of this area here. First, we have to decided our customers by watching a drama namedThe man can not marry, then analyze the life style and home space of everyone in this drama. Finally pick one couple or a single person as our customer. There is a elementary school next to our site,so the people composed here are very simple and pure.Lanes in this area is too narrow to cars for driving in, but on the other hand that seems here is fit to walking.

The position of site, the lane in front of it is less than 2 meters, now here is used as a temporary parking space.

I selected the main couple as my customer, and I supposed that they will have one or two children in the future. Besides, because the main character is an architect, so he might wanted a studio place, as the second program in this housing. N
