Shepherd’s Hand

The mission of Shepherd’s Hand Free Clinic is to provide care to those in our valley who are underserved and are falling between the cracks.

The initial phase of starting the free clinic involved building partnerships within the medical community and sharing the vision with the community at large. With $5,000 in our pockets we opened our doors for the first time in October of 1995. We saw 13 people. Within a few months we were turning people away – the need was great.

We accomplish this through providing the following services:

was established out of a desire to provide medical care for people in the Flathead Valley who are under served. It was founded on the core belief that all people have value and should be treated with dignity.

Since that beginning we have grown both in volunteers and services. We rely on the services of over 200 volunteers onsite from throughout the valley to provide medical, dental and some behavioral health services, as well as the community meal and our wellness services. Shepherd’s Hand is a story about faith and volunteerism; about community and compassion. It’s about people living life together—a dance between accountability and grace. Ultimately what we have learned is that we can’t fix everything but we can show up, we can listen and we can care.

• Access to medical, dental providers and behavioral health professionals.

• Lab and imaging through the generosity of North Valley Hospital and Kalispell Regional Healthcare. • Specialty Referrals • Medications

In the ensuing pages, you will find the story of our clinic as we give a helping hand and share a word of encouragement so that people know they are not alone. Please join us as we engage, listen, foster community, care, share, grow in love & hope and sustain our bodies and our souls.

UNITY DIANE ON BEING A PATIENT Having lived in Whitefish for 11 years and worked in healthcare for many of them, Diane knew about Shepherd’s Hand but had never required their services. However, during the last couple years, she began to deal with health problems that eventually made her unable to continue to work. She and her family were persevering through this tough time when her husband suddenly passed away from a heart attack. “He was healthy. I mean, I was the one with the heart problems!” She begins to tear up, “It’s still hard for me to talk about, I’m sorry.” Left without an income or insurance and grieving her loss, Diane has leaned heavily on her faith and support of her children and friends. “Hope and faith is what keeps me going. I am so thankful Shepherd’s Hand is here to help lift some of this burden.”

WeSHARE WELCOME TO Shepherd’s Hand Clinic

Our Volunteers share the gift of their

time and talents out of a love for people and a desire to give back to our community. Providing an opportunity for people to serve in a meaningful way is a core value of Shepherd’s Hand.

“I was looking for ways to volunteer that would benefit less fortunate people. I have so many blessings in my life and I have concern for those who don’t. This clinic serves these people and I have found it a very rewarding and useful experience. I look at some of these families and situations of people without health care and I know I would be afraid everyday. Many of them are so brave.” — Shepherd’s Hand Free Clinic Volunteer

SYDNI ON BEING A PATIENT [Shepherd’s Hand] is a place where I can get help when nobody else will help me. I’ve known one volunteer for years. And I went to her today for cancer screening and was talking to her about the problem I’ve been having for a couple of months that my regular physician hasn’t been able to help with because I don’t have any insurance. I came here, she gave me a piece of paper to bring in, they are already writing up what I need. [Shepherd’s Hand] has grown so much through the years, it’s just really incredible to see it. It’s a wonderful thing, it really is.

KATHY ON VOLUNTEERING [Shepherd’s Hand] has been a place where I’ve felt like I can volunteer and make a difference. It’s a place where people are helped. Healthcare is one of the areas of greatest need for people without health insurance or a way to finance healthcare. I’ve been volunteering for about 17 years with Shepherd’s Hand. It’s been incredible to see that as the need grew, and as more people were able to give their time and treasure, that the organization has evolved into a place that is so helpful for so many people.
