Book Cover Analysis

Discuss whether you think that the front cover is a successful visual image, say why

Research the storyline of each book Nine-year-old named Chiyo from a fishing village is sold to a geisha house in Kyoto's Gion district and subjected to cruel treatment from the owners and the head geisha Hatsumomo. Her stunning beauty attracts the vindictive jealousy of Hatsumomo, until she is rescued by and taken under the wing of Hatsumomo's bitter rival, Mameha. Under Mameha's mentorship, Chiyo becomes the geisha named Sayuri, trained in all the artistic and social skills a geisha must master in order to survive in her society. As a renowned geisha she enters a society of wealth, privilege, and political intrigue. As World War II looms Japan and the geisha's world are forever changed by the onslaught of history. Discuss the ways in which the front cover visually illustrates the content on the book The use of red lipstick demonstrates how Japanese hostesses are trained to entertain men with conversation, dance and song and it was the make up that played a hue role in this as this was the source which attracted them. The main character was trained and used to entertain men with her stunning beauty. The use of red shows the anger of the bitter rivalry the occurred in the story. The intriguing use of white powder may be have been used to demonstrate he cruel treatment of the person in the book cover, perhaps she was abused so much by men she just didn’t have her own identity anymore the white makeup shows no detail in her skin, it paints over her face and removes her actual appearance so she was only known as a geisha. The make up maybe a way of the author indicating how these women had no say in anything shown through the closed lips. Discuss the effect that the type (font, size and placement) has on the front over image The type of font on this book cover visually illustrates geisha's are apart of japans history and the size of this font demonstrates it’s significance on how geishas much master their artistic and social skills just to survive. Discuss what formal elements the designer has used to create the image (consider color, composition, angles, depth of field, pattern, texture, quality of line, layering etc.) and whether you think these have been successful The designer has used a shallow depth of field in order to allow the red lips to be the main focus due to the content of the book, also to enhance this the image has been placed within the center of the frame to maybe catch the eyes of the audience and to stand out which links in with how Her stunning beauty attracts the vindictive jealousy of Hatsumomo. Perhaps the designer enhanced how pale her face was to contrast with the red lips, as the make- up is a key feature in the story.

This front cover is visually successful due to how well it was edited for example there was only a small use of color but it has the biggest effect. The use of formal elements such as composition was used effectively as it made the photograph stand out well Discuss whether you think that it successfully illustrates the content in the book and say why I think visually this image is successful because it contains only a section of the face leaving the rest a hidden secret this may link in with hidden secret held in the story by other characters, this may also leave the audience curious as to why the designer decided to conceal the rest of the face. Perhaps this was done because the lips are the main significance in the story such as the abuse

Research the storyline of the book: It is eighty-three years after the last of the thinking machines were destroyed in the Battle of Corrin, after Faykan Butler took the name of Corrino and established himself as the first Emperor of a new Imperium. Great changes are brewing that will shape and twist all of humankind. The war hero Vorian Atreides has turned his back on politics and Salusa Secundus. The descendants of Abulurd Harkonnen Griffen and Valya have sworn vengeance against Vor, blaming him for the downfall of their fortunes. Raquella Berto-Anirul has formed the Bene Gesserit School on the jungle planet Rossak as the first Reverend Mother. The descendants of Aurelius Venport and Norma Cenva have built Venport Holdings, using mutated, spice-saturated Navigators who fly precursors of Heighliners. Gilbertus Albans, the ward of the hated Erasmus, is teaching humans to become Mentats…and hiding an unbelievable secret. Discuss the ways in which the front cover visually illustrates the content on the book Due to the hundreds of particles floating away from the machines face demonstrates the battle that took place within the storyline of the book. These particles represent destruction, meaning when you destroy something you are physically damaging and tearing away a certain thing or person, which I demonstrated in this book cover. Also the use of different shapes and color in the face expresses how there will be ‘great changes that are brewing which will shape and twist all of human kind’ the change in color also represent this change which is illustrated in the content of the book. In addition to this there is use of consistent color, which may be to represent the never-ending war, and revenge that occurs in this book. Or the use of the same color on the face and then on parts of the background may be to illustrate these ‘Mentats’ taking over and slowing brainwashing human kind to become like them as stated in the synopsis. Observing this book cover I noticed an image, which may be to represent the earth at the bottom, this may be to visually exemplifies the downfall of the characters fortunes and how their home/planet is slowly being taken over, as only less then half of the image is being shown. Discuss the effect that the type (font, size and placement) has on the front cover image The choice of font size may be to signify the importance of a particular in the area of the book, for example ‘Dune’ was written in the largest font, Dune might be the name of the planet, which certain characters in the book are trying to protect from destruction.  ‘Sisterhood of’ which was written in the smaller font size could be link in with its insignificance because of the betrayal between descendants which occurs in the book, ‘sisterhood’ isn’t demonstrated at all.

Discuss what formal elements the designer has used to create the image (consider color, composition, angles, depth of field, pattern, texture, quality of line, layering etc.) and whether you think these have been successful The designer of this book cover used the element of composition to configure and allow the face to attract the attention of a particular audience. To enhance this the designer also uses consistent color on the face and on the background, which adds a certain quality to the bookmaking it quite successful Discuss whether you think that the front cover is a successful visual image, say why  After discussing how the book cover visually illustrates the content of the book, I feel this book cover is a successful image due to the smallest detail, which represents big things in the book. It demonstrates formal elements and it was able to catch the eye of its audience.

Research the storyline of each book The Shining is a supernatural thriller, centering on a five-year-old psychic, Danny Torrance, and his dysfunctional family. When the family moves into the Overlook hotel for the winter, the problems of Danny's family, problems including alcoholism, abuse, dependencies, and anger, allow the ghosts of the hotel to possess Danny's father, Jack. As Jack attempts to murder his wife and son to appease the hotel, it is the courage, friendship, and love of those around Danny that allow him to survive. While certainly a supernatural novel, The Shining is also a novel of personal suffering and the effects of dysfunction on the lives of others. Jack Torrance, his wife Wendy, and their son Danny are moving to the Overlook hotel near Sidewinder, Colorado for the winter, where Jack will become the hotel's new winter caretaker. Jack, a recovering alcoholic, is working on a play, and plans to use the winter months…

Discuss the ways in which the front cover visually illustrates the content on the book The front cover being in black and white possibly could be to demonstrate depression, due to the problems of Danny’s family the child photographed with his back towards the audience may be to show him witnessing the abuse between his parents, or it could be a sign of the child suffering from living in a broken home.

Discuss the effect that the type (font, size and placement) has on the front cover image The type of font the designer decided to use represents a horror, this distressed type of font may be to link in with the problems that this character is going through. The fact that the title of the book ‘the shining’ is placed in the middle could be to symbolize that there will be a horrible case of event that will cause this character a break through. Discuss what formal elements the designer has used to create the image (consider color, composition, angles, depth of field, pattern, texture, quality of line, layering etc.) and whether you think these have been successful The designer creates a strong contrast between the blacks and whites to enhance the composition, the lack of color makes the book cover successful due to it contrasting with the title of the book and linking with the content of the book cover effectively.

Discuss whether you think that the front cover is a successful visual image, say why This book cover is a successful visual image due to the effective editing: how it’s the little boy and the light coming from the door that is the main focus. Which gives a ghostly feel to the image.

Research the storyline of each book The Big Sleep opens with private investigator Philip Marlowe visiting General Sternwood's mansion. Marlowe muses on the house's art and the fact that the furniture looks as if no one uses it. He first meets Carmen Sternwood, a flirt who, at twenty years old, is the younger of the General's two daughters. Then he meets the General, who receives him in his hothouse, a jungle-like setting in which the old man grows tropical orchids. The General tells Marlowe he is being blackmailed by someone named Arthur Gwynn Geiger, who wants the General to pay for Carmen's alleged gambling debts. Marlowe agrees to visit Geiger and put an end to the General's troubles. On his way out of the house, Vivian Regan, the older of the General's daughters, meets with Marlowe and tries to find out what the detective and her father spoke about, suspecting that it was about her husband...

Discuss the ways in which the front cover visually illustrates the content on the book  The use of collage on the front cover illustrates scenes in the book, the eye within the camera gives a sense of someone spying an or being paranoid. The front cover may be to symbolize someone constantly being suspected like Vivian Regan in the book. The designer uses the same color for the text and the background this could be to show the person who is being suspected may be trying to stay under cover, or blend in so they aren’t noticeable just like the title.

Discuss the effect that the type (font, size and placement) has on the front cover image the title and image being placed in the center makes the front cover eye catching and in a way center of attention.

Discuss what formal elements the designer has used to create the image (consider color, composition, angles, depth of field, pattern, texture, quality of line, layering etc.) and whether you think these have been successful The collaged eye and camera may be to represent a mystery to be solved in the story perhaps characters need to piece together clues, also the use of contrasting colors and shapes creates an interesting composition making the book cover successful.

Discuss whether you think that the front cover is a successful visual image, say why This front cover is a successful book cover because of the use of collage which makes it interesting to look at. The way this collage was put together makes it quite thought provoking.

Discuss whether you think that it successfully illustrates the content in the book and say why I think this book cover successfully illustrates the content of the book because of the composition in the collage and the choice of colors.

Research the storyline of each book Allie Whitman and Connor Norman loved making the devils of the corporate world pay. Now, it’s their turn. And the price could be their lives. “I didn’t have a choice. I didn’t.” That’s what Allie Whitman tells herself every night as she lies awake. Sometimes she even believes it. But mostly she knows deep down that her inability to make a hard choice has put millions of lives at risk, including her own. Now the only one who can help her is her lawyer, Connor Norman. Unfortunately, Allie’s actions have destroyed Connor’s trust in her—and may destroy much, much more

Discuss the ways in which the front cover visually illustrates the content on the book The placement of the face on the building is a way to represent the corporate world play, the imagery conveys some sort of secret trade, the hands covering the mouth shows the inability of this character to make her own decisions. The front cover also illustrates ‘the devil’ taking over from how the building in the image looks as if its towering over you. Discuss the effect that the type (font, size and placement) has on the front cover image The size of the title gives the front cover dominance, it highlights the content of the book, the fact that it is placed in the center it influences the audience to read the book,

Discuss what formal elements the designer has used to create the image (consider color, composition, angles, depth of field, pattern, texture, quality of line, layering etc.) and whether you think these have been successful The designer uses overlapping to create an interesting photographic composition. The use of overlapping had then created an interesting pattern in the face of the character at the front, this detail contrasts with the color of the eyes making it visually interesting.

Discuss whether you think that the front cover is a successful visual image, say why The front cover is a successful visual image due to the designer using two overlapping images, also the use of having some areas black and white and the rest in color had developed the image into a appealing image

Discuss whether you think that it successfully illustrates the content in the book and say why I think due to the choice of imagery it does successfully illustrate the content of the book because different aspects of the image symbolize parts of the story such as the hand covering the mouth, shows how a character in the book is restricted from saying something

Research the storyline of each book A terrible epidemic has struck the country and the sound of children's speech has become lethal. Radio transmissions from strange sources indicate that people are going into hiding. All Sam and Claire need to do is look around the neighborhood: In the park, parents wither beneath the powerful screams of their children. At night, suburban side streets become routes of shameful escape for fathers trying to get outside the radius of affliction. With Claire nearing collapse, it seems their only means of survival is to flee from their daughter, Esther, who laughs at her parents' sickness, unaware that in just a few years she, too, will be susceptible to the language toxicity. But Sam and Claire find it isn't so easy to leave the daughter they still love, even as they waste away from her malevolent speech. On the eve of their departure, Claire mysteriously disappears, and Sam, determined to find a cure for this new toxic language, presses on alone into a world beyond recognition. The Flame Alphabet invites the question: What is left of civilization when we lose the ability to communicate with those we love? Both morally engaged and wickedly entertaining, a gripping page-turner as strange as it is moving, this intellectual horror story ensures Ben Marcus's position in the first rank of American novelists.

Discuss the ways in which the front cover visually illustrates the content on the book Visually this book cover looks like the rapid, persistent chemical change that releases heat and light which this case is to represent the epidemic spread around the country, due to this reason this could be the explanation of the designer using these bright fiery colors such as red, yellow and orange. The use of blue could be to symbolize the suburban streets at night. Due to some pieces of this book cover being absent and out of frame may be a link to how the character Claire mysteriously disappears, the use of red may be to represent the toxic language that some characters are trying to get away from

Discuss the effect that the type (font, size and placement) has on the front cover image

The use of plain text in a white text box against a vibrant and eye catching back ground makes the book cover quite interesting to look at. How the text is placed in between the triangles is thought provoking.

Discuss what formal elements the designer has used to create the image (consider color, composition, angles, depth of field, pattern, texture, quality of line, layering etc.) and whether you think these have been successful The designer uses layering of shapes which creates an interesting pattern, the use of these triangles provides angles which gives an edge to the book cover. The careful use of color and composition allows this book cover to be successful. Discuss whether you think that the front cover is a successful visual image, say why Due to the symbolism of each color I think that the image is successful as a symbolic image is kind of cover the book cover doesn’t give away the story line, the book was created in quite a illustrative way, meaning it’s the imagery that serves an explanation behind it
