SAXOPHONE BEGINNING SAXOPHONE An introduction to the saxophone utilizing simple ensemble arrangements to get a head start on fingerings, sound production and reading in a fun and musical way. HARMONICA BEGINNING DIATONIC HARMONICA You'll recognize the diatonic harmonica as the small harmonica used in blues, rock, folk and even jazz. In this course, you'll learn how to hold the instrument, breathe effectively, play chords and single notes and bend notes, as well as learning song forms such as 12-bar blues and 3-chord folk, rock and country tunes. Required text: Harmonica for Dummies, second edition. Prerequisite: Bring a 10-hole diatonic harmonica in the key of C (contact winslow@cjc.edu for info). Get off to a strong start learning your instrument in this class covering the “bass”ics of what it takes to be an effective bassist in any genre. From jazz to funk and everything in between, this class focuses on topics including, right and left-hand technique, finger dexterity, neck memorization, the parts of the bass, theory, reading, transcription and much more! Perfect for new musicians as well as seasoned instrumentalists with the desire to learn more. Prerequisites: None. Open to all! Students must bring a bass to class. JAZZ BASS Learn a variety of essential techniques for constructing strong jazz bass lines on blues, jazz standards in 4/4 and 3/4, modal tunes, rhythm changes, and ballads. Techniques for soloing are also covered. Perform bass lines in class each week with piano accompaniment provided by the instructor. Recommended for upright and electric bassists interested in participating in the Jazzschool’s ensemble program. Prerequisites: intermediate technical facility and some ability to read music.
