BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) IN ARCHITECTURE THEORIES OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM (ARC61303/ARC2224)

SYNOPSIS: REACTION PAPER (AUGUST 2016) [10 MARKS] NAME: SHERY EDRINA BT SALEHUDDIN ID: 0316321 LECTURER: MR.NAZMI TUTORIAL TIME: 4PM-6PM SYNOPSIS NO: READER TITLE: LEARNING FROM LAS VEGAS AUTHOR: ROBERT VENTURI,DENISE SCOTT BROWN, STEVEN IZENOUR

Learning from Las Vegas discussed about how important symbols and signs are to architecture as how important buildings are to architecture. The author chooses Las Vegas strip as an example of how architecture of communication can be achieved through style and signs over space. From the article, the author highlighted their concern on how commercial architecture is under appreciated while appreciation is given more towards the uncreative adoration of the great modern architecture. In one of the paragraph, Venturi relates the similarities between Roman Piazza and Las Vegas road which leads to the strip. The particular text talks about how the two different elements are somehow being used in the same way which is to lure the people to the place but are being appreciated differently. According to the author, architects are fascinated with the piazza due to it being an enclosed space and since architects have been brought up on space it is easier for them to handle enclosed space. In comparison to Las Vegas strip, it is more of a void with no direction and unspecified space making it hard for architects to appreciate the strip the same as the piazza. Truth is, the only difference between the two is that one space is catered for pedestrians while other is for automobiles. Furthermore, the author also argues on the theorists used by the Modern Architects which focused on space as the main factor and how it separates architecture from art. The author mentioned that the definition of architecture as only space and form at the service of program and structure were not strong enough. To the author, even though mixing of media may weaken the architecture, but it is what gives the building a strong meaning. For example, the Renaissance piazza also uses heavily ornamented with mixed-media symbols to decorate its space and the billboards on the highways of Las Vegas were inspired from Roman triumphal arch. What I can learned from the book was to learn how to observe every place with an open-eye and find the uniqueness of the place cause I strongly believe that every place has its own character that manages to attract people to come and stay at the place. Furthermore, I also agree with some of the issues that were highlighted by the author, for example, architecture and art should be incorporated together and not separated. This is because, I think with an addition of art to or inside a building will lighten up the atmosphere and bring much more character and identity to it.
