LASIK Preparation

Perhaps surprisingly, the actual LASIK treatment only lasts about 10-15 minutes but a considerable amount of time is used readying the person for LASIK surgery. After the right surgeon is decided on, the patient will have their preliminary consultation where the surgeon will find the patient’s baseline and identify whether they are a suitable candidate for the procedure. Contact lensesmust stop being worn at least two weeks prior to this appointment. This is done to make certain correct corneal measurements are taken since contact lenses change the shape of the cornea. Patients are allowed to wear eyeglasses. Information regarding one’s medical history and eye health will first be gathered by the physician. The patient will receive eye examinations similar to a common eye exam. Then they’ll be given an evaluation to establish the absence of eye conditions such as dry eye, scarring, and cataracts. These checks will also take a look at the thickness and curvature of the cornea, pupil size, baseline for normal vision, glaucoma test, retinal exam, and test for astigmatism. The surgeon should also allow the individual to ask any questions they will likely have during this time. A conversation will ensue pertaining to the risks and benefits of LASIK and other likely options for the patient. A few days before the procedure, application of all lotions, creams, shampoos, and conditioners should cease. Possible debris from eye lashes must be removed with a scrubbing in order to avoid infection during or after surgery. Arrangement of a ride for the day of the surgery and for the first follow up appointment, usually within 24 hours of the surgery, should also occur ahead of the surgery.
