Page 2 Dear Friends, This is an exciting time to be a part of the Geneva Lakes Family YMCA! In June, we will celebrate our 130th anniversary. In honor of this milestone achievement, I’d like to take a minute to reflect on the Y’s history, and thank all of our members, staff, volunteers and community supporters who enable the Y to thrive and carry out its mission every day. On June 4, 1883 under the leadership of Rev. L.A. Williams and a group of dedicated volunteers, the Y formed in Lake Geneva. It soon found a permanent location in a downtown building at the corner of Cook and Main, and quickly became a place for fellowship, study groups and recreation. Relationships and collaborations with churches, schools, service groups and the chamber of commerce quickly blossomed, further fueling the need for a Y in our community. In 1965 the Y moved into its current building, a former Piggly Wiggly store. Building renovations in the 1980s, 90s and early 2000s occurred in response to the community’s need for additional programming space for youth and adults, with the most recent addition being the Chapin Aquatic Center in 2003. What a blessing it has been to the community, opening the doors to year-round aquatic programming for everyone. You see, the Y is constantly listening to broad-sweeping community needs, and we respond to those needs in ways that will benefit the community as a whole. A recent example of this is our decision to open up the facility for 24/7 adult access. Our Y has seen a lot of changes over the past 130 years, but the one thing that has always remained constant is our commitment to strengthening the community through programs and opportunities that empower people to learn, grow and thrive. The Y plays a vital role in shaping children and supporting families in an inclusive environment. The Y’s success will always be measured in the lives we touch, the relationships we build and the impact we have in our community. Here’s to the next 130 years!
