Across five halls our students, faculty, and guest artists will shine in hundreds of events, ranging from thrilling orchestral works and intimate recitals to expressive chamber music and fully-staged operas. We’re especially proud to feature six world premieres, including four

by Shepherd composition alumni. Together, these performances offer you a welcoming haven: a chance to pause and be restored by the beauty of live music.

Season Highlights Make Shepherd your musical home! Shepherd students, faculty members, and guest artists present over 400 performances each season. From solo and chamber music recitals to master classes, orchestra concerts, and full opera productions—the options are endless.

Orchestras Across ten exceptional concerts, the Shepherd School Orchestras bring monumental repertoire to life with masterworks by Mahler, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Beach, and Berlioz.

The season features special concerto appearances by renowned Shepherd faculty Erin Hannigan (oboe) and Jon Kimura Parker (piano). And Shepherd Spotlight concerts continue to showcase the breadth of student talent, featuring the 2026 Concerto Competition winners, class of ’26 composers, and standout vocalists and conductors.

Opera This season’s operas feature complex female protagonists, vocally demanding roles, and an irresistible blend of tragedy and comedy: Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos and the Texas premiere of Matthew Aucoin’s Eurydice.

Plus, opera students take the stage for Bel Canto Opera Scenes with the Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra, and join celebrated soprano and Aleko Endowed Artist Julia Bullock for a collaborative recital.

Chamber Orchestra: Beethoven 5 & Hannigan’s Debut Fri, Sep 25, 2026 at 7:30pm Miguel Harth-Bedoya, conductor Erin Hannigan, oboe Milhaud: Le Bœuf sur le toit Jeremy Gill: Soft as the Massacre of Suns, fantasies for oboe and orchestra, on poems by Emily Dickinson (World Premiere, Commissioned by the Shepherd School of Music) Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 The Shepherd School Chamber Orchestra kicks off the 26/27 season with rhythm, poetry, and power. Milhaud’s Le Bœuf sur le toit is a lively, surrealist piece packed with infectious Brazilian dance rhythms. Professor of Oboe Erin Hannigan is the soloist in a brand-new work, written for her by American composer Jeremy Gill and inspired by the poetry of Emily Dickinson. The night ends with the most famous four notes in history: Beethoven’s unforgettable Fifth Symphony.

Honoring Mahler’s vision, Shepherd Orchestras embark on a journey through his symphonic output with the monumental “Titan,” depicting nature’s sounds as a profound narrative of life. The program also includes excerpts from two pioneering voices: a lyrical movement from Amy Beach’s historic “Gaelic” Symphony and a dramatic prelude from Dame Ethel Smyth’s opera, The Wreckers.

Epic scale meets brilliant virtuosity in a performance featuring celebrated pianist and Shepherd School professor Jon Kimura Parker.

He tackles the formidable, symphonic scale of Brahms’s virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 1. The energy continues with Martinů’s sweeping First Symphony—a work written late in the composer’s life that masterfully shifts between vibrant, explosive rhythms and deeply reflective melodies.

After giving audiences a preview at the 50th anniversary gala, mezzo-soprano and Shepherd alumna Sasha Cooke returns for the world premiere of Professor of Composition Pierre Jalbert’s complete song cycle Another Starry Night, which sets texts by Walt Whitman. The evening culminates in Tchaikovsky’s emotionally charged Fifth Symphony, a gripping musical journey where a dark, recurring “fate” motif is transformed into a triumphant celebration.

Chamber Orchestra: Orchestral Reimaginations Fri, Mar 5, 2027 at 7:30pm Miguel Harth-Bedoya, conductor Diego Jaquez, tuba (2026 Shepherd School Concerto Competition Winner) Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 5, “Reformation” Vaughan Williams: Concerto for Bass Tuba Prokofiev: Symphony No. 1, “Classical” Old traditions get a fresh twist. Mendelssohn honors his idol, J.S. Bach, in his sweeping “Reformation” Symphony, while Prokofiev pays a witty 20th-century homage to Mozart and Haydn in his joyful “Classical” Symphony. In between, Concerto Competition winner Diego Jaquez takes center stage for Vaughan Williams’s Tuba Concerto—a historic work that first proved the tuba could, too, take the spotlight as soloist.

This program bridges the deeply spiritual with the wildly theatrical. Barber’s achingly beautiful Adagio for Strings commands total stillness while Carlos Simon’s Four Black American Dances erupts into motion, honoring the rich, rhythmic dance forms of Black American communities.

The concert closes in spectacular madness with Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, a gripping, psychedelic masterpiece of programmatic music.

The final orchestra concert of the year unlocks three distinct, brilliantly imaginative worlds. Shepherd School Concerto Competition winner Marina Ziegler performs Bartók’s fiery and folk-infused Violin Concerto No. 2, followed by the world premiere of Yu-Shiuan Mei’s … in wonderland, an imagined dreamscape through fragmented quotes of Beethoven’s music.

The season comes to a close with Mussorgsky’s majestic Pictures at an Exhibition, a vivid musical stroll through a gallery of paintings brought to life by Ravel’s spectacular orchestration.

Shadle, Associate Professor of Musicology, Vanderbilt University Why is going first at something always a struggle? Amy Beach, Ethel Smyth, and Gustav Mahler all experienced the distinct difficulties of going first. This talk explores how charting new territory changed the lives of these composers and continues to shape how we hear them today.

Alternative Histories of Nineteenth-Century Italian Opera Sun, Feb 7, 2027 at 12:30pm, Tudor Patrons’ Lounge Dr. Benjamin Walton, Professor of Music History, University of Cambridge Explore Italian operatic history beyond the traditional canon, from a global perspective. This talk answers two questions: how does the history of Italian opera in the nineteenth century look when placed in a global context, and what might such a history look like if we move away from a focus on works by canonical composers like Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, and Puccini?

Dr. Francesca Brittan, Associate Professor of Music, Case Western Reserve University

Dr. Morrison’s research focuses on the relationship between identity, performance, property, copyright law, and inequities within the history and performance of music, with an emphasis on American popular music and its global impact. He is the author of Blacksound: Making Race and Popular Music in the United States (UC Press, 2024).

This talk explores how Berlioz’s increasingly massive orchestral visions mirrored a broader 19th- and 20th-century trend known as “orchestral sociology.” This movement used musical ensembles as templates for a range of social and political utopias, from socialist and feminist structures to intergalactic visions.

Can tragic opera and slapstick comedy coexist? When a wealthy patron demands both genres be performed simultaneously, backstage egos collide and artistic tempers flare. Richard Strauss’s brilliant masterpiece offers a witty look at the clashing personalities—from the lovelorn heroine Ariadne to the feisty Zerbinetta—who turn theatrical chaos into art. Pairing soaring vocals with opulent melodies, this inventive “opera-within-an-opera” proves that even pandemonium can lead to something truly transcendent.

The ancient myth of Orpheus and Eurydice has inspired opera for centuries—but never like this. Composer and MacArthur fellow Matthew Aucoin and librettist Sarah Ruhl flip the script, placing Eurydice at the heart of the narrative to follow her emotional journey through the underworld and back to herself. The Shepherd School is proud to present the Texas premiere and first-ever university performance of this breathtaking modern classic.
