Britain’s Oldest Brewer Faversham, Kent

BREWERY TOURS Small Visitor Attraction of the Year SILVER AWARD WINNER

Behind the scenes at Britain’s Oldest Brewer Beer, the ‘Drink of England’, has been produced in Faversham for over 850 years and the Shepherd Neame Brewery, set in the heart of this historic market town, has been part of this tradition for well over 300 of those years. Our Brewery Tours give an insight into the history, tradition and industry that has made ales, especially Kentish ales, such an important part of our national culture. Our award winning guided tours start in the Visitor Centre, a beautifully restored medieval hall house in Court Street. From here our expert guides will take you through the busy working brewery revealing the mix of traditional and modern technology used to produce our range of Kentish Ales and speciality lagers. Discover the secrets of brewing as you are guided through the brewhouse with its tradtional mash tuns. Here you can taste the malted barley, sample natural mineral water from our own well and smell locallygrown Kentish hops. You will find out about every stage of the brewing process as well as packaging and distribution during your fascinating tour which also features Shepherd Neame’s history and heritage. Tours usually include a visit to the Old Brewery Store which houses displays of bygone pub signs, hop picking memorabilia, a recreated cooper’s workshop and a collection of historic delivery vehicles. Notes: Soft drinks will be provided if preferred and for visitors under the age of 18. Many of the areas visited on the tour are of an industrial nature so in the interest of safety, children must be at least 12 years of age. The tour lasts for approximately 2 hours and includes historic buildings with steep staircases and uneven surfaces. The tour may therefore be difficult for infirm visitors and is not suitable for wheelchair users - “virtual tours” are available as an alternative but must be booked in advance. Practical footwear is recommended. Production or engineering considerations may restrict access to certain areas on some occasions. Brewing is a batch process so we cannot guarantee that any particular piece of equipment will be in use at the time of your visit. #Production does not normally take place at weekends. Events, private hire or operational reasons may mean occasionally The Old Brewery Store or parts of the Visitor Centre and tour route may be closed.
