Earlier this year I opened my new business, Surfside Riders Ink (SRI). Since then I have been motivated to start a reward program for the Hornell City School District. My goal with this program is to motivate the Hornell area youth to not only do better in school, but to become better community members as well. To be eligible to participate in the reward program the student must be in grades 4-9 and should sign up within the first three weeks of the school year. The participating students must then carry a B or higher GPA for the duration of the school year. Also, as a requirement of the program the student must complete ten hours of voluntary community service – which can be as simple as helping out at a local sporting event. Providing “My goal is to community service is about giving back to the community as well as proving the student to be an outstanding citizen. motivate the youth to In the month of May local teachers, parents and not only do better in community members will pick the recipients of the award. For the 2011-2012 school year there will be at least two recipients. school, but to become This year the theme for the program is “Surfside Riders 2011 Anti-Bully Movement.” Over the summer SRI better community Ink witnessed first hand bullying at the local skate park. My goal members.” for this program is to encourage children to stop bullying both inside and outside of school, and this aspect of the program will be taken into account when the recipients are chosen. The winner of this award will receive either a BMX bike, skateboard or gift certificate (valued at $100-$300) and a $50 Savings Bond. SRI will donate 50% of the cost of the bike, as well as the cost of the Savings Bond. Surfside Riders Ink is currently selling “Anti Bully” wrist bands for $3 each to raise money for the program. The money raised will cover the remaining cost of the item awarded to the winner. The remaining amount of money raised will be donated to a Hornell sports team to use for uniforms and/or equipment. So far this year I have raised over $200! That is enough to cover the prize costs for one student, and I will continue to raise money throughout the school year by selling these wrist bands. A portion of the proceeds from various other events sponsored by SRI will be utilized as well. I believe in our youth. Because of this I will do whatever I can to motivate them and get them involved in the community. Several students have approached me about the program already this year. I see this program as the motivation some kids need to make better use of their time. I have given them something to work toward, and hope to continue to do so for years to come.
