PARK KINDERGARDEN Project Type: Architecture Design Project Time: 2014.11-2015.01 Team: Individual Work Tutor: Ercument Gorgul

In Shanghai, many big scale projects are under construction every day, Norman Foster, David Chipperfield, SOM, OMA, GMP and many famous architects came here after the end of 20 century. However, something really important ignored during that fast city development: the environment for the citizen especially the children. For the children in that generation, their memory for that city is mostly high-rise towers, huge shopping malls when they don’t have many chances to be closed to the nature. In that project “Park Kindergarden”, the key is how to create natural space for the children in the noisy urban context when the area of available is limited. Thus, park and natural outside space would be proposed in the ground level when the classroom would be overlap upon the park. The circle shape of classroom is also a soft way to create the relationship with the nature. Hope the new generation children in Shanghai could see more green tress and blue sky in their kindergraden.

The site locates in one of the biggest city center of Shanghai-Xujiahui, and with the fast urban development in the past 15 years. The children in the kindergarden would have less and less possibilties to touch the nature. It would also be more and more difficult for them to see the blue sky through the gap between tall towers. As we know, the step of urban development cannot be stopped and Shanghai would be denser and taller every day. Thus, during that process, how to give the kindegarden in that site more nature environment would be the problem we would solve in this project.

CLOUD TOWER Project Type: Architecture Design Project Time: 2016.03-2016.06 Team: Individual Work Tutor: Bai Chun

The main question needs to answer for this project is how to design a hidden, friendly tower in the old city. As the site locates in Suzhou, a long historical city with small urban texture. It is a challenge to design a small tower in the old city district when the surrounding height is under 10 meters. The ambition of the project “Cloud tower� is to create a landmark with good quality as public space. The program of the tower is proposed to be tourist center and local people also can use the public facilities inside. Based on that, the wooden sticks facade would respect Chinese wooden culture and make the volume hidden.

SITE

Suzhou city is famous for its long history and traditional garden. The site locates in the center of this old city and surrounded by many famous tourist spots. This design wants to argue that whether we can break the skyline of Suzhou city at the physical level to have best views, but the wood façade could help the building hidden like “Cloud”. Moreover, the spiral circulation could lead tourists to have 360°view of the whole city which could create unique experience in the whole city.

Volume The height would be around 24m and in the floor level, module would be 2700

Circulation Vertical circulation would be organized based on the view elements. Thus, the whole circulation would create the experience of different views to the whole city.


Program Series different public program has been proposed: lobby , stage , exhibition , information , meeting , multimedia , tea house.

Facade The facade would be created by wood stick which could help the tower hidden itself and be more friendly to the city.

If we say bricks want to become arch, how about paper? Shigeru Ban has shown the potential of paper as the architecture material. This project is one of the participants of the construction festival of Tongji University and is named as one of the best designs. Our team tried to use different size of paper scrip to build the paper arch, in the structure system, paper becomes quite strong as the pure construction material.

Part of this design is the way in which it works with the context and nature by recalling what was there, and works with what’s there now. This design focused on how to create interesting riverside public space for Yangzhou city. A good design could bring the city an 8km long riverside park and history related design could keep the old culture and memory. In urban design level, 8 different size buildings were proposed along the 8km long riverside public space. Different building type and program could influence bigger area and many public activities could happen around these buildings. These buildings (Willow Gallery, Cauliflower CafÊ, Water Filter, Riverbank Stadium, Viaduct Concert, Shipyard Museum, Tank Apartment and Gantry Crane watchtower) were designed based on the related location, history and culture.


Mangdao River locates in the code area of Yangzhou new city area. The riverside space is one of the most important public space in the new development urban area. This design focuses on 8km long riverside space of 48km long river. The design issue would be how to relate people and water in different levels? How to connect the site cultural memory and new design? Which kind of circulation, program is needed for Yangzhou new city?
